Something that just reminds me of my age is when filling out my birth date on online forms. I have to scroll...and scroll...to get to my birth year.

I look a bit younger than my age, and when people who think I am much younger find out my actual age, they say things like "you're THAT old?".

LOL. Yes, that's what they dress like. They make a mockery of Saved by the Bell, not knowing that I wanted to BE Lisa Turtle growing up. lol.

Right now, my back makes me feel old. I'm walking like an old lady. Between sitting in my car for 3 hours a day (to and from work), my crappy ass old bed that needs replaced (I have a Trump Serta mattress picked out, just need to wait a few payhecks before I can afford it), standing in horrible steel toed boots for 10 hours a day (got new ones yesterday though, hope they help) and needing to lose about 20-30 pounds.... my lower back is killing me.

starang21 08-29-2010 02:58 PM

i said something to the effect of "'bout it, 'bout it" to this girl working behind the counter at a fast food place.....

she didn't know who or what i was talking about.

ColdInCanada11 08-29-2010 03:18 PM

I work at a kids camp, and was mocked last week for learning to read from a book and not a Baby Einstein dvd. The history and English student in me just died a little.

Ohhhh... not only am I too old to have learned to read with a Baby Einstein video (Dick and Jane, anyone?), but my kids are too old to have learned to read with Baby Einstein.

You should get Xtra-Tufs and put your own insoles in. I was so comfortable this summer, and they come in steel toe if you are required to be safe.

I feel old when college freshmen, and new fratties flirt with me and I feel like a creeper. This is exponentially worse when they are shirtless. I'm in a relationship but if I wasn't I still wouldn't be interested. I need someone who knows what a card catalog is and when we had discmans and no iPods.

OK, when did these Baby Einstein videos come out/become popular? I had never heard of them until my niece was born ( 6 years ago). I'm assuming that children who learned via BE must of been born in the 90s.

I learned to read with Little Golden Books; I used to love reading Poky Little Puppy to my grandmother and little cousins :D

KSUViolet06 08-30-2010 12:37 AM

Yes, they're more of a "born in the mid-90s" thing, and they're very popular with parents having kids now.

I'm pretty sure the first books I read were Richard Scary type ones and good ol Dr. Seuss.

Try a Sleep Number bed before the Serta. They are AMAZING!!! I'm having a similar problem.

ColdInCanada11 08-30-2010 07:44 AM

When I asked what they were, it just led to more mocking.

Yep, the Little Golden Books, Dr. Seuss, and the Berenstein Bears populated my childhood. We might not have need a remote for them, but we still had a good time. :)

I grew up on the little golden books! I loved the Berenstein Bears as well, only their politeness bugged me a little. My favorite book in second grade was "Green Eyes", about a cat with green eyes, lol. I borrowed it from the school library so often that they had to remind me to let others enjoy the book, too. As a kid, there was something so magical about reading, getting lost in the story. It makes me sad that kids don't seem as interested in reading anymore.

LOL. You're either old or you're just coolerererer than she is.

On that note, when the teenagers don't know that certain songs are remakes or they think certain songs and artists are new. Then I show them the date that the song was released and the artist first came on the music scene.

I remember when my parents used to school us on music like that. They'd get out the 8-tracks and albums and tell us what's what. That's one reason why I still prefer older music and listen to the old folks stations. :p

Yep.

I'll hear things like "Nicki Minaj/Lil Wayne/Kanye/OtherRandomArtist is so original! The best ever!" and end up letting them know that 90% of the artists' songs are sampled from older artists.

DrPhil 08-30-2010 03:19 PM

I hate Nicki Minaj. I also hate when I accidentally memorize her lyrics.

The sad thing is that I actually liked Lil Wayne before he became what he is now. He's annoying now but that's what the younger people like.

knight_shadow 08-30-2010 03:21 PM

Ditto. She is truly awful. And it's hard to escape her, since she's a guest artist on EVERYONE else's singles. I'll be happy to see Nicki and Drake's stars fade.

She's doing what Lil Wayne taught her to do. Be EVERYWHERE. She's a hot plastic surgery mess. Argh.

Drake? I refuse to acknowledge his existence. I saw the MTV commercial announcing his stage performance on some show.

This reminds me of when Puff Daddy (when he still went by that) sampled Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" for that God-awful Godzilla movie soundtrack and I overheard some kid exclaim that "They took this riff from Puff Daddy" when the original Zeppelin song was playing in a store. :)

Y'know, having conversations about how good music was back in "our day" is making me feel old.

So is the prospect of getting in late from work and having to cook dinner. That plan may turn into ordering Dominos and having a beer.

On other notes: KSU--you shut UP I still watch SBTB faithfully before I leave for work in the AM.

Ppl laugh @ Buffy but it was SO the throwback Twilight/True Blood.

I would absolutely go to a 90s party. Bring on the Poetic Justice braids, mini backpacks, thigh highs and Zima.

IrishLake 08-30-2010 08:16 PM

I feel old that I don't know who Nicki Manij is (or whoever...)

They read, but it is stuff like Harry Potter and Twilight. I'd have to go into my archive, but there was a study done to see if Harry Potter did increase reading among children, and it didn't increase over all. Kids would read only when a new Harry Potter book came out, and not find other books to read in the interim.

Happily, Barnes and Noble has reissued several of the Little Golden Books. I'm thrilled because our copies of several that I loved to read to our children are worn out, particularly "The Color Kittens"!

...and in all that brown, the sun went down...

Consider yourself lucky lol If you've ever listened to the radio, though, you've probably heard her (she's on 2.3 million singles right now)

Leslie Anne 08-30-2010 09:39 PM

I don't understand the jokes in the "You Laugh, You Lose" thread. That makes me feel very old.

tootiepie2 08-30-2010 10:15 PM

I am teaching the children of former students. Last year I taught 3 grandchildren of people who graduated with my husband and he is a year younger than me.

Pecan 08-30-2010 10:55 PM

I remember the world before the Lil Wayne, Nikki Minaj (sp?) and Justin Bieber takeover, and even before Spice Girls and N'Sync.

Does that make me old?

DrPhil 08-30-2010 11:12 PM

When the rap fans of today don't know the origin of hip hop and rap, and the older hip hop songs including: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSoXHUlwraU

Waiting for a bus a few weeks back, a young man stopped and asked me "Pops, do you know what time it is?" Pops?!?! It was worse than the first time I was called "sir" and the other person wasn't patronizing me.

My first camera was a Polaroid Swinger. It cost $19.95 (if I had too much to drink, I would sing the Polaroid Swinger jingle for you all)

I cannot watch Saturday Night Live (except for the Betty White episode) because whoever is in the cast won't be a funny as the original cast. Yes, I know why "Franco is dead" is funny. I cringe when I remember laughing at SNL sketches in which Buck Henry played a child molesting baby sitter.

I remember when television sets had rabbit ears.

I own a Smith Corona Correctomatic Typewriter. That was cutting edge technology in 1975; I was a popular person in the freshmen dorms.

I know Bobby Sherman and Leif Garrett are.

Oh well

Meet the swinger, Polaroid Swinger! Meet the swinger, Polaroid Swinger! It's more than a camera, it's almost alive, it's only nineteen dollars and ninety-five!

Swing it up (yeah yeah) it says yes! (I forget the rest)

ETA: My husband thinks that the last 2 lines are:
Swing it down, it says no!
Turn it off!

Amicus 08-31-2010 08:57 PM

You did it better than I could have done. My hat is off to you, lovely lady

I almost always recognize the remake (and I know I'm not a teenager, but still) because of my dad's musical tastes and tendencies to play the same tape...yeah, it took him a long time switch to CD's and we're just now teaching him how to use the iPod on the iPhone he got for work...over and over and over and over. But many of my friends do not recognize that the songs are remakes and it makes me sad they missed out on great music.

I felt old when I got my first mailing from AARP.

I was 19. The mailing came to my college address. I wasn't even old enough to drink legally, never mind retire.

:(

Southern Hardcore Rock... Like "Maylene And The Sons of Disaster"

Now I'd called it country, blues, rock--something, but kids call it something else... LOL!!!

Bless they hearts...

Amicus 09-01-2010 11:49 AM

I have a friends who cast their first votes ever for then-California Gov. Jerry Brown in the 1976 presidential primaries. Gov. Brown was seen as the future of the Democratic party; I think he was all of 38 years old at the time. The more things change...

The other day I used the term "Rockefeller Republican." In mock horror, one of my friends said "You mean Jay Rockefeller used to be a Republican?!?"

The above story does lead to another point, I remember when "liberal Republican" and "conservative Democrat" were not contradictions-in-terms

Visiting my cousins (middle school aged) who were listening to Justin Bieber. I commented on how one of the songs sounded like NSYNC.

They both gave me a blank stare and asked who that was. When I told them it was the band that Justin Timberlake used to be in, and I think they got it.

I'm closer to 35 than I am 20. I turn 30 in 14 months.

All if these new kids going through rush were still in elementary school when I first joined GC (in 2001). I'm also thinking about my retirement and wondering if I'm really investing enough into my 401k.
