Just wanted to comment on the idea that a chapter received women on their bid list that "suicided" and were not invited to their preference event. As a campus-based advisor, please let me assure you there is no possible way that chapter members would know that these women "suicided". The only individuals who see the Membership Agreement Forms are the Panhellenic Advisor and potentially if the RFM happens to be on campus during Formal Recruitment. The Membership Agreement form is the most private part of Recruitment in order to protect the PNM. Even if these women did not attend the chapters preference night, these women would never know that they single intentional preferenced their chapter, which makes the scenario seem very suspicious. The comment above that explains a chapter snap bidding unmatched women is much more realistic, and how flex lists actually work. At no time will a Panhellenic, RFM, or Panhellenic Advisor arbitrarily assign women bids to chapters just to "meet numbers"; particularly at a competitive recruitment campus.

I think a chapter can only snap to quota, although they can offer bids to total with little to no restrictions once bid day has begun (or ended?)

Daughter's sorority just got their bid list and found out that girls who weren't even invited back for prefs at their house were able to suicide for her sorority and get in. I'm so confused! She said that UGA is doing something called flex.. (I didn't really understand what she meant by that.) Anyway, Panhellenic didn't want girls to be left with without a house at all, so they gave them the sorority they suicided - even though that exact sorority cut them before prefs. Her sorority made above quota, so it wasn't a numbers thing. Can someone please explain this?? I thought a cut was a cut during rush - no going back. Why would UGA do this to their sororities? It's like they are rewarding the girls for suiciding despite the fact that the sorority didn't want them.

As far as the bid list goes, chapters can choose to add women to their bid list even if they did not attend the chapter's party. This is often the case if they invite women to their preference and those women elect to go to other chapters, most of the time if the chapter liked those women enough to invite them for preference, they would be delighted to have them in the house.

That being said...its not really a flex list per se for the bid list.

And per NPC rules...a woman who single intentional pref's any house, regardless of whether or not she attended a pref party there, is NOT available for quota additions.

My best guess is that the chapter did not in fact make quota and made snap bids to those women who did not match through regular matching.

And this is simply not possible. No panhellenic could offer a PNM a bid from a chapter without their consent - only the chapter can offer a bid

I think often times a chapter adviser and membership/recruitment chairs will make decisions about who to make snap bids behind the scenes on the day of bid matching that the chapter doesn't know about. While those women who SIP wouldn't be eligible for QA, if they went unmatched they ARE eligible for snap bids or COB.[/QUOTE]

I agree that these were probably snap bids. Nobody, even the recruitment advisor or chapter advisor should know what a young woman put on her bid card so the "fact" that they SIPed is probably rumor or speculation. Panhellenic officers may have that information, but it shouldn't be known to anybody else. Even in the days of hand matching, unless a woman's card went around more than once, we didn't know who else was listed or in what order. I don't believe that women in chapters of almost 200 all know exactly what went on, who was on the bid list, etc. Women can be on the bid list even though they didn't attend pref in some circumstances. I'd chalk this one up to the rumor mill.

It is highly unlikely that an entire chapter knows that a PNM suicided. And really, PNM is generally not going to tell an entire chapter about it BEFORE bids have been given out. It would do nothing but hurt her if everyone knew she did it and didn't get a bid. Makes no sense.

Congratulations to your DDD daughter! My beloved grandmother was (I guess still is) one of the first members of the UGA DDD chapter! She still lives in Athens but not in good enough shape to go visit the new house - but I know she was excited about it. I hear they are lovely young ladies!

newfresh 08-16-2010 08:44 PM

My daughter is a new Alpha Gam! She is so excited and glad that recruitment is over. She loves the girls in Alpha Gam that she met this week. I think it is going to be a good fit for her. When she finished with the pref parties, she knew she belonged at Alpha Gam. I am so happy for her!

Quota at UGA this year is 54 + 8 upperclassmen (62 total)

This sounds like the chapter got 48 and then snapped to 60.

OleMissGlitter 08-16-2010 09:53 PM

AOII pledged 62 new members! (11 legacies might I add)

carnation 08-17-2010 10:55 AM

I would swear that UGa published a bid list in recent years. I'm hoping to find out about the local girls.

NUBlue&Blue 08-17-2010 11:38 AM

They did do a list, but I think it was somewhere on the greek life website awhile after recruitment.

I just remember that it was an excel spreadsheet and you could change the sorting....it was interesting to see which chapters took more upperclassmen, which chapters had more out of state girls, or girls from certain cities, etc. by sorting it different ways.

But I haven't seen it again since that year. Then again, I haven't looked. I think it was the year that a bunch of my daughter's friends went through rush--probably 2007.

ToujoursSK 08-17-2010 03:11 PM

They posted one in 2007 when my daughter went through, but have not in the years since. There was a change in leadership in greek life and I don't think they agree with posting the names. Wish they would consider it again.

SouthernComfor 08-17-2010 04:06 PM

To all the GCers who gave such good advice on preparing for recruitment and explaining the process, who acted as virtual hand holders for myself and the other moms of PNMs, who sent messages of congratulations...THANK YOU!!

To momuga: I can't tell you how happy and excited I was when I found out you and your daughter are DDDs. Your comments about 'UGA on the inside' from yours and your daughter's perspectives were so helpful and some of my favorites when this mom was worrying about her PNM. I feel even better about the excellent choice my daughter made on pledging Tri-Delta and thrilled that our daughters will be sisters. Thank you!

First of all, congratulations to all the new members!!! But, as for the tie dye, hair (not HAIR)..............I remember it well. The only things that they are missing are bubbles (you know the kids toy) and/or a sunflower to carry and give..........Sunset Blvd at its best.

In that particular album, yes - it seems that's where he finished for the night.

There are 4 albums on that particular facebook page of pictures from Bid Day.

Through some serious facebook stalking, I found that a girl I used to babysit went Sigma Kappa at UGA! She is a great girl and is going to be a wonderful member.
