This might sound like a ridiculous question, but do any schools have "minimum" GPAs required to "stay" in a Bachelor's program?

Most universities have an academic probation policy which allows students to make a number of attempts to bring a GPA up. It would be poor form to disqualify a student from university on account of one poor semester, even a 0.0 semester - most universities are more forgiving than that. We allow three semesters on academic probation, provided the student earns at least a 2.0 semester GPA while on AP.

I have been a professional academic adviser for a number of years at the state university. My immediate reaction to hearing about a student who had a 0.0 GPA two terms in a row is to think that it is very likely he experienced some kind of serious situation (death in the family, illness, accident, victim of a crime, etc). I've advised hundreds of students on academic probation or who have been disqualified; VERY rarely does a student earn 0.0 twice in a row on account of sheer laziness or too much partying. I hope that student mentioned went to seek help from an adviser or dean to discuss his circumstances. :(

I know that some majors have GPA requirements to get into their programs, and remember some people having to put off their official "declaration" by one or two semesters until they reached the minimum.

My school has that. Also, there is academic probation, but I don't think it's anything but a fancy term.

He simply never went to class and he partied like crazy. On top of it, he was a insulin dependent diabetic and so was another girl on my dorm floor. They used to take turns getting drunk so the other could monitor the blood sugar. They were, quite simply, idiots.

His mom was a psychiatrist and his dad was an attorney and they had given Jr. everything he ever wanted his whole life. He had no concept of working for something. After the first term, Mommy had colleagues of hers write letters that he was having difficult adjusting to college and was in treatment and would surely do better the second term. He didn't.

Mommy and Daddy pulled the funding after his freshman year. They decided to start parenting that year. About 19 years too late I'd say!

That is an indicator of a gifted child. My state doesn't do IQ testing when we are looking for gifted students, but indicators like that would have you nominated for GT.

We are allowed to nominate ourselves for GT. Had I not been in GT already, I would have been "that girl" who would have nominated herself. lol.

I, too, sleep with my teddy bear. I got Mr. Bear when I was born. He's 29 years old. He started out as Wish Bear. Now, he's missing fur. The puff of hair on his head is gone, as is his patch. The heart on his butt no long says Care Bear. His eyes are completely white. His arms and legs are falling off... they've been sown back on plenty of times. He's still my best friend.

Despite growing up well off, my parents grew up and started poor. Yet, I've been working since I was 16 (not during the school year because I played sports). This is the first time I've been without a job since I turned the legal working age.

I secretly want to be a hair stylist but it's not a secure job and I have the beginnings of rheumatoid arthritis so I would never make it.

Carnegie Mellon puts freshmen on academic probation if they fall below a 1.75 for their first 2 semesters. Sophs-Srs have a 2.0 cutoff.

I really like what MIT does. http://www.mitadmissions.org/topics/...ass_no_record/

That's very interesting.

We have "freshman forgiveness" which allows you to retake anything you fail and replace it on your transcript with the better grade (and recalculate your GPA). You have until you reach 30 credits to use it.

So if you get an F in Psych 101, and you retake and get an A, the F is erased from your transcript/GPA calculations and replaced with the A.

GCers would never guess...

- that I was also on academic probation (1.5) after my first quarter of college. TOO much partying!
- I secretly want a high adrenaline job - cop, firefighter, storm chaser, rodeo clown, etc.
- At the age of 15, I did a rodeo circuit in Colorado (barrel racing). On one of my days off, I want on a rafting trip down the Colorado River. It was there that I jumped off an 85 foot cliff into the river...biggest wedgie EVER!

- Oh, and my 33 year old, construction worker of a husband, 6'4", 220 lbs, as manly as manly can get, still sleeps with his baby blankie, every single night. He gets mad when I wash it when it starts to smell like dirty socks. It has a name, "Huckie."

You were not!! I was in Fall River, December 28, 2001. The woman right before me fell and broke her torch. Did you go to the Hatch Shell in Boston that night?

I still have the outfit too!! I had to get the smallest size as well. I swam in it.

We pledged a woman who didn't make her grades the first term, then the second term, so she was automatically depledged. She was so well-liked, though, that she ended up living in the sorority suite for another two years, and signing up, if not showing up, for classes. I often wonder how she had the gall.

None that I know of.

But we do have pictures (somewhere) of when wife and I were at a luau on the Big Island. Two other guys and I got "picked" from the audience to go up on stage for impromptu dancing. Annie Potts was there as well (this was when "Designing Women" was at the height of its popularity), and as we reluctantly went up to the stage, she yelled "Show us your stuff, boys!"

So . . . I have shown Annie Potts my stuff.

PM_Mama00 08-02-2010 09:34 AM

Oh yeah I, too, was on probation but not with school. I messed up one semester which dropped my GPA to a 1.9. My chapter put me on probation and threatened to give me the boot if I didn't raise it over 2.5 so I took 9 Spring credits and rocked it out. Got As and a B and then took a summer class and within one semester raised it back up. I've never worked so hard in my life.

nikki1920 08-02-2010 12:50 PM

I was on academic probation my first year of college-due to mono. Against all advice, I kept that semester's grades, and was kicked out of school the following fall because I missed the cutoff. I did correspondence courses and returned the next summer. :)

I was an excellent pianist when I was younger (I've fallen way out of practice); I played Rachmaninoff's Prelude in G Minor (Op.23, No.5) for my eighth grade piano recital. I chose my undergraduate university based on the reputation of the music department. I was a double major in piano and vocal performance until I realized that my favorite hobby was no longer anything I could turn to as an escape. Almost 20 years later, I'm still glad I made the decision I made, but I miss playing/singing.

I know exactly what you mean. I realized that the fun would go out of it if I had to do it to put bread on the table. It's still my favorite hobby, although music is such a part of who I am that I rarely think of it as a hobby.

MaggieXi 08-02-2010 01:40 PM

GC would never guess that...

I have a brain that matches faces with names immediatly. If I learn your name and see your face once - I will always remember it. This was immensly helpful for recruitment!

Also, I am dyslexic and because of that I can not spell at all. Or do math. I never got out of Algebra 2.

I miss playing the piano too, even if it's only Christmas carols these days. I'll stick to singing along to showtunes in the car for now I suppose. As long as I stop at a red light so no one else guesses what I'm doing.

I was the only black in most of my classes all throughout HS. It made me disappointed that more of the other black students didn't push themselves when they were more than capable.

I used to rap with my cousin and a few of our friends about 12 years ago. We recorded albums and sold them for like 4 bucks a piece.

I don't like being naked if it doesn't have a purpose at the time.

I have an idea to start a nonprofit.

I sleep with my version of the baby blanket, a pillow called baby pillow. It was the pillow my mother grew up sleeping on and it smelled like her. I always worry that when I leave it home when I go on a trip the house will burn down and I will lose it.

I would secretly love to be a fighter pilot for the navy.

OHNOITSJESS 08-03-2010 02:41 AM

I started singing competitively (and placed) when I was 3.

I wanted to be a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader (but I've been out of dance for so long)

I spent my entire freshman year trying to convince myself that I wasn't going to be a good engineer, so I tried to act like a music major.... except I did horribly in my engineering classes and got kicked out of Tech for a semester... I came back and changed to a different engineering and I LOVE it :) and I still had choir solos

OMG! The horror! The only time I'm comfortable is when I'm naked. In broad daylight, I'm naked. At night, I'm naked. I would drive naked if the police would let me. Mind you, I'm a BIG girl. I have no problem with people seeing me naked though.

Every day after work, I'm naked within five minutes of getting home. I finally got my husband to disassociate nakedness from sex, so now he barely notices me. Meanwhile, he stays fully clothed.

Oh, I thought of a weird and totally not attractive one. I don't know if it's call an oral fixation, but I think that's what I have. I used to bite my nails like crazy. I still bite my cheeks and chew gum (or sometimes sunflower seeds) especially if I'm stressed or nervous.

Recent, but worth noting. I enjoy roleplaying and watching anime. I'm not into cosplay, but I have several friends who are. They're normal however, unlike GC members who are into that stuff. ;)

Despite all of my discussions about penises, I have never been turned on by one. I don't swing that way at all.
