My alma mater has started requiring the MGC organizations to have a "mass probate/coming out/showcase" at the end of each semester. Even if the students haven't been initiated, all organizations are required to participate.

Many of the older organizations (that have done coming out shows in the past and don't completely bite other organizations' styles) have been upset about it and will typically bring current members on to talk about their respective organizations. The newer organizations (who obviously searched for "Probating 101" on Youtube) will emulate the NPHC organizations' styles, including chants, steps, etc. Their new (or soon to be new) members usually have no idea what's going on, but will try to carry those things over into their active semesters.

I know that if it annoys me, it must be frustrating to the members of the NPHC community here.

In this vein, they strike all the time. I had a "pledge period" when getting into my honor society (which had Greek letters). Greek letters were assigned to certain dorms and we had to be "initiated." Black folx always tryna 'nitiate somebody. :p Honestly, some things are not meant to be "made special." Sometimes an honor society is just a bunch of smart people and should stay as such. Leave the nerds in peace.

Are you sure the Greek Life director understood what was meant by "surfacing"?...It's very public but greek life understands and requires that those who will participate have been inducted and the new members' names/info are submitted to the greek life office prior to the show.

Opinions of organizations aside, there's really no difference between someone pledging for Beta Kappa Chi (or a gospel choir or a band or any other group) and pledging for a BGLO/LGLO/MCGLO/NIC/etc. It only makes as much sense as our perception allows it to.
