When racist people stop making up derogatory terms or making terms derogatory, that's when we'll stop changing them. And you can call people whatever they choose to be called. If one person chooses to be called African American, so be it and if another chooses to be called Black or otherwise, so be it. No one has the right to determine how someone or a group of people choose to define themselves and it's not important that you understand or get it. Respect other people and they will respect you. Period. |

The most racist and derogatory term in the thread was cracker that was thrown my way by a well know racist DaemonSeid who defends murderers because of the color of their skin. Quote:

I respect people that go to school, get jobs, work hard, take care of their kids and don't break the law. |

You're still an idiot for idiot's sake. Have fun. :) |

Cracker isn't half as hateful as the word colored used the context and meaning you're using and Mumia wasn't a murderer. He was targeted by the police for what he wrote about them. Any pigs that may have died definately deserved it. So does anyone who disagrees with that sentiment. |

Unless you count when you THOUGHT I was calling you a dreadlock Rasta. I already told you I'd never insult Rastas like that. |

But you are in the ballpark. I don't type racial slurs either :D I do however believe in intent. Spin on it for awhile...it will come to you. |

Anyway, you were wrong for typing that slur, regardless of your intent. |

And has this little bit of banter really progressed to "your mama" jokes? Srsly? Next will come, "Talk to the hand" if y'all keep it up long enough. Then we'll be forced to have a "Food to eat while watching the DS vs. DP thread" thread. |

...called it. I mean since I have all the time in the world, with not working, disrespecting myself, and breaking the law. |
This may just be me but I don't generally refer to someone's race when I'm talking to them. I'm pretty sure they know their race. It comes up maybe... once every 100 or so conversations.

I'm not trying to stir the pot here, just honestly asking. This makes me think of an old WWII propaganda poster I saw once, the jist of which was "how to tell a Chinese person from a Japanese person so you're not unnecessarily mean to the Chinese person since it's not them we're pissed off at." |

She and all other people of the African diaspora will just have to take it on a case-by-case basis. Being Jamaican or Brazilian, for example, are not racial designations. Black and African American are pretty standard. People can specify their cultural or ethnic designations from there. Black and African American are the least offensive and least nitpicky of the category labels, as far as I'm concerned. They originated for a reason. Quote:
Does anyone remember the martial arts film "Chinese vs. Japanese?" Great film. A lot of people didn't know there WAS a difference before that film was released in America. |
