We ALWAYS wore red for prefs. For years, we had a bride's maid style dress with this terrible ruffles for sleeves. Thankfully we got rid of those the first year I was on the sister side of recruitment. After that we had matching red suits and wore them with bone colored shoes and hose. After two years they switched to long red dresses that they all bought from a catalog. I remember being so awe-struck walking into Biedenharn gardens for pref and seeing all the sisters dressed in red lining the lawn!

We did not have fancy schmancy prefs - we usually were dressed in varying combinations of red, black and white. The only chapter I think did matching outfits for pref was ZTA and they all wore grey suits. This is 20 years ago though. I'm sure it's changed since then.

We wear white while most other chapters wear black. This was really contraversial several years ago when the (former) Bama Admin pushed recruitment beyond Labor Day. This may sound silly to some, but it's the South. White after Labor Day? We had a chapter debate/vote on whether we should change. We decided to keep it just because it made us unique amongst the other chapters on campus. Fortunately for this reason and so many others that are far more important, we were happy when recruitment returned to Aug the week before school.

We wore black dresses (not cocktail dresses, more like church-appropriate dresses) with our badges. In fact I remember being told that we couldn't rush someone during prefs without our badges on. We also had to wear black hose and black heels. NOONE was allowed to wear nude hose.
pretty much all of the other sororites wore black as well. I have no idea what they wear now! |
Mid-80's rush. Wine (why couldn't we have used silver blue instead?)polyester satin floor length dresses. Pouffy short sleeves, drop waisted. We looked like bridesmaids from hell.

You know, what we need on this thread are some pictures! Particularly those of us from the early, satin, handmade era!
Off to dig some up hopefully... |
We switched from black to red my first recruitment and I loved it! It looked so pretty...It brightened up the room so well for pref

We have pink bridesmaid dresses. I think that everyone else is either black or white on campus, but I'm not a 100% sure.

I'll post a picture! (Even though we wear standard black...hehe...) This is the only decent one I found:

I joined through COB, so I've only seen Alpha Phi's pref. But we never use name tags. Do many other chapters use name tags during pref?
|
Cute, Lucy! And I love the fleur-de-lis name tags! We can only wear the UF-produced white rectangle nametags that we are issued through panhellenic.

It was 1971, and everybody was into "doing their own thing," so we wore (long) formal gowns, any style, any color. It was nice because each girl could chose the outfit that best suited her......but it gave the chapter no unity.
Next year, we had the same sky blue fabric, but each person chose her own dress pattern. Now THAT was a big success! A few years later, as advisor for a chapter, I made a couple of dresses for girls out of a dusty blue polyester fabric (hey, it was THE fabric of the '70s!). Same pattern for everybody...they turned out beautifully. All I've seen lately is black. It's probably about time for a change! |

I seem to recall a Sigma Kappa chapter wearing lavender for pref. It was in an issue of the Triangle sometime around when I pledged, which was Spring 2004.
