All the time.

Just give a North-South intro and the Civil War gets discussed. :)

The fact that this discussion is happening in a "Blacks that rush NPC" thread is beyond ironic and comical.

I say check out all orgs. There are a lot of misconceptions, stereotypes, and hearsay out there. Dig deeper. Black people join NPHC orgs for many many reasons which may or may not include the fact that they are Black.

Well, Idiot Newbie, I asked if this has been discussed so someone could direct you to a more informative thread. Word to the wise, if you go into rush being an assumptive idiot you'll have more than being black to worry about. Good luck.

Aren't you being a bit harsh?????

Anyways..... in reply to this thread.....
One of my best friends in my sorority is black. There are also people who are asian, indian, and arabic. I honestly don't think anyone thinks about it when we're all together unless somebody brings it up. When rushing be yourself because that's all that's going to matter in the end.

And to contribute to the post, like BabyPink said, people like you for YOU.

If you feel comfortable going through NPC rush, then go for it. It sucks that some people miss out on such great organizations just because they think they won't fit in or it wasn't made for them.

BabyPiNK_FL 05-02-2008 09:15 PM

This is for my homeboy PantherTEKE...

So, some of my chapter sisters go to leadership conference in GA. Omega also happens to be having a conference there. For some reasons, all the other chapters have a curfew that they have to be in their hotel rooms by a certain time. This is foreign to my chapter but I guess because where were from that would be laughed at. So my sisters wander downstairs and basically run into some Omegas having a grand ol' time in the lobby & around and what not. They are just hanging out and the Omegas begin tell my sisters how they were trying to talk to some girls in a sorority and they all said they have curfews and could not stay downstairs. My sisters inform him that they are in the same organization. The Omegas look and them and exclaim that "that can't be, because you're not white!" My sisters also told me had I gone I would have stuck out something fierce and that they stood out a lot too. We had a good long laugh about it. I love when we get together with other chapters because it's always an experience.

I would just like to emphasize that this thread is regarding possible NPC membership, but I too recommend looking into all orgs. before deciding. I did and knew right away that NPHC wasn't for me and I would have joined a multicultural group but the ones on our campus tend to lean toward a specific ethnicity (mainly the founders'). And that didn't sit well with me at the time. Looking back I would have been at home in one of them, but am very happy in my current group.

(ETA: Please don't get caught up in the whole N/S thing, at the end of the day we're all here because we're Greek or interested in Greek Life. I only brought it up because these were issues that I had to look at prior to joining and I wanted to express my experience for the OP.)

My grand little is black in a mostly white sorority, and girls were fighting over who would be her big sis because she is one of the sweetest and smartest girls we recruited.

I just felt the need to interject with this:

This gets us into another important point:

Having "different types" of people in a chapter is a surface-level fix if people do not talk to each other about things that would matter on the outside world (i.e. the difference between Arabic and Arab).

This is why I don't like it when people say things like "whether you're black, white, purple, green, whatever...people are people" or "it doesn't matter what race you are" or "I don't see you as black, I see you as my friend." You don't have to ignore social attributes for someone to be in your social circle. Don't be afraid to civilly talk about things that go beyond the surface level because that's what INCLUSION and DIVERSITY really mean.

I know the feeling since I'm at a crossroads with a few NPC and NPHC orgs. I feel like I need to pick what's right for me but at the time have something in common with the group. If I joined a NPC I think I would feel out of place since there arent a lot of blacks usually in them but sometimes I feel like I wouldnt fit in a NPHC beacuse I've always been in mostly white organzations (beacuse I went to mostly white schools). I guess at the end of the day it just all boils down to which group you would feel the strongest bond with.

At my school, there is at least one black girl in each NPC group. The black girl in AOII is one of my best friends in the whole world and we get along so great! (I'm surprised that she hasn't posted to this thread yet because she's a GC freak like me too)

I asked her once why she joined AOII and not an NPHC group and she said that she didn't want to deal with all the bullcrap involved with those groups in order to get in (I have no idea what that "crap" is because I know next-to-nothing about NPHC groups, sadly... apparently recruitment for them is a very secretive and drawn-out process, at least on my campus...). And that she felt that she needed to help AOII get on its feet as a chapter (we were a colony last year).

NPC or NPHC... it's whatever you want it to be, really. I don't think you should have a problem "fitting in" at all. And when you go through recruitment you'll have a good idea of the chapters that like you and the chapters that you like so it'll be easier to see which one is the right fit for you. :)

Oddly enough, there is one white girl in my school's Zeta chapter... she's so cute and really looks like she belongs there and is wanted by her sisters (she's in ALL their pictures looking like she is having the time of her life.) AND, there is one white guy who's a Sigma at my school. Go figure. :) They seem to be very happy.

You'll be happy too, whatever you choose! :D
