I honestly don't know why. I was wondering if the new number it put us at could be the average chapter size, or if we had a whole bunch of seniors graduating this year that would put us into a hole, or a ton of December graduations.. I really have no idea. It was a college panhellenic decision I guess and a very kind panhellenically oriented one, I'd say.

Seems to defeat the purpose of total if it's not going to be stuck to anyway... Then again, I always thought that quota above total was freebies, if you lost members due to graduation or whatever other reason, as long as you were above total, you couldnt pick anymore up...

nonetheless - congrats on the new members.... :)

you are correct-quota above total is freebies and until the chapter goes below total or formal recruitment rolls around again, the chapter cannot extend any bids. whatever the reason that alpha gam was able to recruit, i am sure that they were thrilled to add 13 new girls to their huge chapter and congratulations to those new girls!

I'm excited to hear about the new Alpha Gams! I bet the chapter is thrilled. I was also delighted by the recruitment thread and I'm happy for the poster and Delta Gamma. It sounds like a great experience overall.

As far as why, and this is only my speculation since I sincerely know nothing about it: could it have something to do with average chapter size vs. total?

If the earlier post about total being 170 was right but many/most chapters have closer to 200, the "smaller"* chapters still need a way of catching up. With all but two chapters being above total, they probably wanted a way to place more girls, but for some reason they were hesitant to raise total.

It also seems to me that having more groups participate may make informal recruitment more successful overall and draw more PNMs to participate. It'd be interesting to know if the groups below total recruited as well or better this year compared to years when there wasn't a structured informal with other groups participating.

In my opinion, the groups that participated are comparable draws, so it seems unlikely that girls would only participate with their hopes on one.

*(how can we describe any chapter of 120+ as small, really, and I think all of them at UGA are that big?)

ETA: I see that I read over AGDee's post in which she noted average chapter size as a potential reason. Duh, sorry for my repetitive statement of what she had already noted.

I absolutely agree. When I went through informal, there were 6 groups participating, and even though the rumor was that one of the chapters only had 2 slots to replace graduated seniors, it gave informal recruitment less of a stigma since a third of the chapters were participating.

I'll be seeing GBPhiLtColonel and the other GBP's at our Panhellenic Founder's Day Annual shindig so I'll say congrats to them.

Best of luck to the new colony.

Does anyone know how many actual bids were given out during Spring Rush at UGA (UGAmoutaineer I hope you got one) ?

Also does the fact that a girl had a rec at a house in the fall help her at all during Spring ?

Just curious..I thought it was interesting the way it was done. You never knew about the parties or how many their were ?

Also what are anyones thoughts about going through rush as a sophomore..if you went through as a freshmen and did not get a bid ?
Especially if you are from out of state.

Here's a recruitment story from a girl who went through spring rush at UGA this semester as a sophomore. Maybe it will give you some info about how it was structured.

Thanks for sharing such a great story.

Unfortunately the recruitment process that my daughter went through did not come out with a happy ending.

Fawn Liebowitz 02-07-2008 06:14 PM

Was your daughter invited to parties but didn't receive a bid, hollywin?

I'm sorry her ending wasn't a happy one...what happened?
