I'm pretty sure Kurt Cobain never hit a woman, doubtful about elvis.

Bing Crosby did though, you could have used him.

I'm not going to say that the people who are criticizing others for saying bad things about Ike are necessarily left wing hippies. I just personally think that the world is a better place without Ike Turner, he was a burden on society.

Doing drugs doesn't really mean anything to me, for the most part you're hurting yourself there. Not to mention that those guys have already passed, how exactly does that fit into this thread?
They do all have one thing in common with each other but not Ike Turner: They were talented. Rick James is the least talented guy on that list but he still was a lot more gifted than Ike.

Well your post adds to the subjective nature of this entire thread discussion. But since we're still typing: :D

I don't consider drug abusers to only be victimizing themselves. An illustration of who drug abusers hurt can be seen in shows such as "Intervention."

I consider Rick James to have been more talented than Elvis Presley's thieving ass. Young Elvis was okay but still one of the artists back then who got credit when it wasn't due. But James and Presley were both junkies (perhaps among other things).

And I consider Ike Turner to have been extremely talented during his prime. The story of Ike and Tina wasn't one of a completely talentless man looking for a meal ticket but rather a talent scout, producer, and song writer who found someone to be the lead. http://www.history-of-rock.com/ike_and_tina_turner.htm

Now...I've successfully turned into an Ike fanatic for the purpose of this thread. And it sucks a little.

You've begun twisting the facts to win an argument, an argument that doesn't need to exist. It seems as though you are disagreeing with me just for the sake of disagreeing.
Also, the talent thing is obviously a matter of opinion.

That is pure comedy, coming from you.

You are obviously young and still in school. Ike Turner pre-dates you. Just because the movie came out in your lifetime doesn't mean you know his life story nor can you judge his talent or impact in the time in which he first made his mark.

Here's the headline and opening paragraph from Newsweek's article on his passing:
Quote:

RIP, Ike Turner
His troubled personal life overshadowed what was really a brilliant career in music.

The first word that pops into your head when you hear the name Ike Turner is, undoubtedly, Tina. Fair enough. The second, perhaps, is wife-beater. OK, also fair. But chances are the third word is probably not genius. Simply put, the man's despicable and self-destructive offstage behavior toppled his reputation as a towering figure of 20th-century music. As a multi-instrumentalist, bandleader, promoter, songwriter and talent scout he had few peers during his five-decade career. But his appetites for drugs and women, and certainly his reputation as a physically abusive husband, reduced him to a caricature by the mid-'90s: rock-and-roll villain. His death came on the heels of his first Grammy since 1972—and in the first blush of something that was beginning to look a little like redemption. --Rest of article here.
Quotes from a BBC article, read the whole thing here:
Quote:

Turner, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, is credited by many music historians with making the first rock 'n' roll record, Rocket 88, in 1951.
Broadcaster Paul Gambaccini told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "In musical terms [he was] very important.
"Rocket 88 is one of the two records that can claim to be the first rock 'n' roll record, being the other being The Fat Man by Fats Domino from 1949," he said.
He said the track was an "indisputable claim to fame" for Turner. "To critics he will be known as a great founder, unfortunately to the general public he will always be known as a brutal man," he added.
Turner was also known as a prolific session guitarist and piano player.
You can even find articles with praise for his talent that ran in The Washington Times and Fox News, which I'm guessing are right up your alley...

This isn't an "argument." This is (now) a light hearted discussion in a R.I.P thread. Most of the posts in this thread aren't about R.I.P and don't belong here, including yours. And I don't know what facts there are to twist but I do always think it's dumb when someone enters into a discussion and then accuses responders of disagreeing with them just for the helluvit. Is that what you were doing in your initial post?

PhiGam.. you are missing the whole whole point of the names I listed....and duh...those guys already passed?

...nooooo kidding...maybe that's how it fits into this thread...

Altho most of Ike's wrongdoing haunted him while he was alive, most of the names I listed had some of the same issues....altho they were talented, they still had demons that OVERSHADOWED thier talent? maybe that's how it fits into this thread perhaps??

And perhaps measuring talents was not a point of the names I listed because it's all subjective and not really the point at all.

Ike Turner made the first rock record? I guess you've never heard of Bill Haley. Not to mention that Ray Charles invented the genre with which Ike Turner made most of his hits, (Male vocalist with a trio of female backup singers).
BTW, I hate Fox News and the Washington Times, sorry to destroy your stereotypical view of southerners that are in good fraternities.

Like you said, his demons overshadow his talent.

The "picture" I've gathered of you from your posts has absolutely nothing to do with you being either southern or greek.
