I think so. Not as common in informal practice. Moreso like on programs at NPHC events in my area.

Out of curiosity (and, if I'm stepping on toes, I apologize in advance), before the prevalence of the internet, was discretion as important as it is now? I often wonder just how big of an impact the web has had on different aspects of Greek life, so I can't help but wonder whether discretion amongst NPHC potentials has become even more paramount than it used to be.

'Future' Q Dog

are you looking for attention?

Is that why you created this thread?

Did it work?

Are you satisfied?

If you ever cross are you going to change your username to something like

"IamNowaQdog"

If you get dropped and for some reason never finish, can I suggest a name for you ?

"4everEternal"

Just a thought.

But we can and do use Frater more formally, and did much more so in the past.

thats true, but me personally, if you're not a Zeta or a Sigma, or i dont know you personally, i'ma call you Greek.

I still think you're being facetious.

I can only speak for my Sorority:

Yes, discretion is of the utmost importance. Rumors are started that way which usually entails false accusations regarding membership at a specific locale for a specific time.

Interestingly, accusations are formally investigated by my Sorority. The investigation team are members from another area of the country.

But I have "heard" ;) that other NPHC organizations will place names of the offending potentials on their websites if it has been found that there were involved in any illegal activities prior to official membership--that includes legal documentation...

My Sorority is only allowed to post names of its offending members.

All of us in the NPHC consider that a violation against membership can be construed as hazing and therefore under State law anti-hazing statutes, there are variations on the concept.

Moreover, when I say the "investigation team", for my Sorority, it includes prosecutors, lawyers for the Sorority, judges and law enforcement officials and background checks with references are done.

The FBI has assisted us in the apprehension of those who are forging my Sorority documents and accepting members under a false pretense with false names.

We prosecute for defamation and slander under the full extent of the law, because all our literature and symbols are trademarked.

I am not close to joking about that--especially in 2008...

future Q-dog,

If you don't foresee a problem, then why ask? If you have to ask if there will be a problem, then wouldn't you be better off with another name that would really present virtually no problem whatsoever? Just a suggestion. You asked.:)

IMO, the internet has caused folx to become indiscreet. So yes, it is even more important now to remind them of discretion.

I don't understand why, but people perceive this negatively.

You're presumably old enough to choose a screen name. You're old enough to accept the consequences.

If to you, it says "this is what I've wanted all my life" - keep it. If you get to school and find out it works against you, well, that's the chance you take.

Don't let others make up your mind for you. But be mighty sure you accept the possible consequences of what you do decide.

I think the correct answers are . . .

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Yes
4. No

AKA_Monet, ladygreek, and Senusret I, thanks for the clarifications. Seems I was wrong about some of the specific terminology (which is why I asked), but I hope I got the general concepts right. Being an interest does not make you a "future ABC" - it could be years before your application is accepted, if it ever is.
