True Delaware story: I had to call Encyclopedia Britannica to get something sent to Dover back in the day when FedEx didn't deliver everywhere.
Me: Hi, I need that sent FedEx to the Dover Mall
EB: I don't think FedEx ships to Dover.
Me: I'm sure they do - it's the state capital.
EB: State capitol? Of what state?
Me: Uh, Delaware.
EB: (indignant) And what state is Delaware in?
Bad enough from the general public, but scary from people at an encyclopedia company....

But enough with the Delaware stuff ---- good luck with recruitment, sounds like you're approaching it with a great attitude.

This is much like the multiple American companies who try to send things to my aunt by international shipping because she lives in New Mexico.

I'm pretty sure you have to be 21 to enter a bar in all states. Clubs are 18 to party, 21 to drink.

Late reply I know, but that's not completely true. I have a friend at U of Iowa who says 19 and up are allowed in to all of the bars in Iowa City (but of course you have to be 21 to drink). If someone knows better please correct me but that's what I've been told.

Everywhere is different. I've heard of clubs that are 25 and up due to catering to only "young profesionals". Some clubs have all ages nights but are 18 for girls 21 for guys on a normal night. Some are 21 and up period. Some are 18 and up for everyone. It really depends on the business and the state and local laws...

Late to this, but responding. Yes, there is a city ordinance in place in Iowa City that allows adults 19 and over into bars, regardless of time of day. 18 and under can be in until 10pm.

It is a highly debated topic in the area and a motion to move it to 21 was voted down earlier this year. It is ridiculously easy to get a drink in an Iowa City bar if you're under 21. Granted, if you get caught, you will pay the fines, and some debate that's why the ordinance has stayed in place - it's a moneymaker for the city.

The bars in my college town were 20+. Funny story, there was a bar called "The Pace" (actually it was Change of Pace, but I don't think anyone would have known what you were talking about if you said Change of Pace)...the bar was owned by the city Police officers. Easiest bar to get into with a fake (no personal experience, but I did see some pretty bad fakes other people had), and easiest bar to get a drink in underage, except for maybe the Two Dogs shot girls.

Well, recruitment time is almost here!!
8 more days until we move back, 10 to orientation, 12 to recruitment and 22 until bid day! Okay, I sound crazy, but I'm really excited.

I hope everyone is not tired of recruitment stories yet :). I debated waiting until after recruitment was over to post, but there are so many girls that go through, I think it will still be very anonymous. Plus I don't intend to say anything nasty!

I just wanted to bump this thread, because it was already on the third page and I didn't want it to get too buried. Stay tuned!!

Not long now!!!!

BlueHens213 02-13-2008 11:47 PM

I just had my recruitment orientation!!
Now I'm really excited :). I have 3 RC's who all seem really nice.

So Friday I'm visiting...
Phoebe
Chandler
Alpha Delta Pi (who is only participating in Open House Round)
Mike
Monica

and Saturday...
Joey
Rachel
Gunther
Ross

Saturday night we rank and Sunday all day we have Sisterhood, where we can attend a max of 6 parties. I'm done late Friday night, but early Saturday afternoon, so I'll probably update then :)

[question mini-hijack]

Okay how does it work if the PNM really likes the colony, but the colony pulls out after the first round? I mean I know that PNM's should keep their options open, but we are always telling a PNM to follow their heart. Has anyone who has ever had a campus with a new colony had this problem (either with themselves going through rush or a PNM)?

[end mini-hijack]

At first I thought you meant the colony doesn't get the response they wanted first round and leaves campus and says forget you. But now I understand. :)

It's my understanding here that the PNM can go through more rounds of rush and meet the other groups. If they don't see anything they like better, they can drop out in favor of trying to get into the colony.

On the one hand, I would think that may be risky for the PNM since it would be like SIP, but at the same time a colony will most likely be taking more new members than an established chapter would since they would try to bid the average chapter size.

Well, you have to have balls to be a founder, so it follows that you have to have balls to drop out of formal & take the chance you'll be accepted as one.

Good luck & have fun!
