What a sensitive bunch.

^^ Not trying to be 'sensitive', but I interpreted the OP's statement not as thinking that being Asian was a problem, but wondering if being Asian would be a factor that would cause some groups to drop her. She could have worded it better, but that is what I think she is concerned about.

Granted we are working with limited knowledge of where this young woman is planning on transfering to, but if she is at all in anyway concerned about her ethnicity being an issue during recruitment, why would she seek to join any of those groups. And it is this that I think others are commenting on. And granted this is GC and many things are posted on the fly, a la Freud what you post and how you post usually have some bearing on your personal feelings. I can't ever imagine me wording something in the frame of: "the problem is I'm African American." Those words don't even sound right coming out of my mouth like that.

Exactly what I was thinking.

Well, I was wondering maybe because given the fact that there aren't that many asian sororities comparing to those historically white or african american sororities. I mean, even the biggest one, aKDPhi, only has roughly less than 50 chapters. So not every single campus can accommodate the OP's needs I guess.

I have a few friends, they are asians, and yet they joined NPCs. Some of them are even the only asian in their sorority. All it matters is your mindset. If you are afraid that being asian will affect your chances, with that mindset, you may end up being "rejected" because you don't feel comfortable about yourself to open up.

UGAalum94 10-09-2007 05:28 PM

I think that there are many worthwhile organizations that probably have individual members who might act in a discriminatory way. But if the aims of the groups were noble and the groups itself wasn't fundamentally about discrimination, I can see why a person might be worried about discrimination and interested in joining at the same time.

As an overly simply example, suppose I want to be a volunteer firefighter. If the group is presently overwhelmingly male, I might wonder if my being female is going to be a problem in my full inclusion in the group. Now, I know that I can force my way into the firefighters if I'm otherwise qualified in a way that's different from a social sorority, but I don't think the fundamental question of whether other people's tendency to discriminate will be a problem is much different.

I don't think the OP indicated any fundamental self esteem issues or craziness by asking.

ummmm, in the year 2007 that right there would most probably be defined as a problem.

It's because they're not like us so they don't understand. :p ;)

I'll trade you your adobo card for my halo-halo card.

Being Asian shouldn't be a "problem" for membership in an NPC group, anymore than being Latina or African American is. It could be a consideration, though, and anyone who subscribes to the model minority myth is simply ignorant.

My chapter had many girls of all races, religions and ethnicities, but it would be inaccurate to say that all campuses and chapters have this kind of representation, when they clearly don't. Not that GLOs are equal opportunity groups anyway.

The answer to whether race is a barrier to entry depends on where you go to school and perhaps which houses you are interested in joining. Some embrace diversity, and others are not focused on that. I'm glad to see more diversity in the collegiate pictures of my GLO magazine year after year at many chapters. While the chapters in the deep south are comprised of mostly caucasian girls, that could be demographics in part--are there many Asian girls at schools such as Ole Miss?

To the OP: if you want to go through FR, then do it. The junior status will not help but might not be as big a barrier as you think. Race is always out there--sometimes viewed positively, sometimes not. Only you can decide whether it should scare you off from meeting some potentially wonderful friends in a house, or simply be a physical characteristic that is one more way to show how fabulous you are. If you have a lot to offer a house in the way of leadership, academics, community service, and other talents, those qualities will come across well when you meet people, and the girls in the houses SHOULD meet someone like you because they need those qualities in their members. Yes, there are people in GLOs who could be more openminded, but this is life in general, isn't it?

"those people"

there's no way any self respecting filipino should ever give up the halo halo card. that's like the highest rank a flip could ever achieve. you'd be taking a downgrade. unless it's for day old adobo. chicken that is.

macallan25 10-09-2007 11:15 PM

Depends on where the OP is going. Sure it could be a problem.

I don't think your race is the problem at all. Why should it be? I think those members who deny membership to anyone based on race alone have the problem.

SthrnZeta 10-10-2007 09:33 AM

We had a couple Asian girls in my chapter and we referred to one as the "Asian Sensation!" She embraced her nationality but also very much embraced American culture, as she was born and raised in Northern VA. She made fun of herself all the time and it was never an issue that she was "different." She was an awesome collegiate member and now she's a leader in her alum chapter. Of course we all knew she came from different origins than most of us, but it was never an issue...ever. I am proud of my diverse chapter! I think even an all white group would accept you. I'd say the only thing you need to worry about is your Junior standing - but again that depends on the school...

DaemonSeid 10-10-2007 09:40 AM

What is this?

Crouching Rusher, Hidden Intake.....sheesh

If you think your race is keeping you from joing a GLO then maybe you shouldn't join said org...it's only a problem if YOU make it a problem.

I just thought this point needed to be reiterated. I think too many people reading too much into the OP's post.
