I have to say - I love what my school did and still does. All the Greeks help move the Freshman in and wear the Panhel recruitment t-shirt instead of letters so it's very "Go Greek." I had all my stuff in my dorm room in about 5 minutes between all the frat guys and sorority women helping me. It gives you a really positive image of Greek Life right from the beginning AND exposes you to Greeks in general. The Rho Gammas are lurking around of course to ensure no dirty rushing goes on ;) But the fraternities wear letters or their Rush shirts and are of course free to rush whomever they want. It's really a lot of fun on all sides I think - I was a Freshman, a Rho Gamma (had to be sneaky there) and a sister so I got to see all angles. What a great GMU tradition!

At Bama most of the PNMs live in the dorm across the street from sorority row so it is very tough on them if they get dropped or if they drop out or don't get bids. It must be hard to be in that dorm on Bid Day which is quite the spectacle at Bama.

I thought most of them were in Riverside or Lakeside now....opposite side of campus.
Yes, it is hard...my daughter was in that situation...I think she went to the mall to get away.

No, the majority of freshman girls still live in Tutwiler. Riverside is strictly an honors dorm, while Lakeside is honors and non-honors. I live in one of the new dorms, and while they were a good amount of girls from Riverside, Lakeside, Ridgecrest going through rush (we all had same Crimson Ride bus stop), it was nothing like the amount of girls at Tutwiler.

Haha, yeah, GMU, the school I went to, George Mason University. It's ok!

At my school they charge about $15 to rush. You get a T-shirt that everyone has to wear the first night.

I just misinterpreted the response. It came off as rude but I guess not.

You said on here you had 20 people in your chapter. I'm assuming that rush at your school was far from competitive. In that environment, everyone does get to know each other better at rush.

When you have to meet 1000 WOMEN and choose a pledge class, then we'll see how down you are with letting the rushees stay there for days on end.

Oh, and refreshments? Are you REALLY complaining about this? Do you really want a rushee to pledge your chapter because your food was the best?

Seriously. See the thread on dumb reasons you cut or accepted a particular chapter. Most of us can look back and admit our 17-20 year old brain made some absolutely stupid decisions with no actual basis...

I like variety. I see the good and the potential in everyone. I'm happy with my GLO, but I don't have to use subtle or overt snobbery to make myself feel good or tear anybody else down. I think most Greeks at heart, feel the same way.

I agree that refreshments shouldn't be the focus of recruitment, but let's be honest, isn't there something to be said for being able to have the recruitment party you want to have?

There's nothing wrong with having soft drinks and cute desserts (or whatever you want to have other than drugs and alcohol.) And we can all think of stupid restrictions that we've heard about. My all time favorite is still the ban on using glasses that "referenced" alcohol, no matter what was served in them.

Sure, there might be a cost savings to the chapter not to do it, but some of the biggest recruitments still do have refreshments, and honestly how could you expect girls to rush from dawn to dark without food?
