My fave gadget:

Cowon A2 Player - best 300 buck I ever spent....plays video, mp3s, podcasts, has a radio tuner, A TV tuner (but only works in europe but whatever...lol) photo viewer and documents....plus the battery lasts between 8 to 10 hrs ( and yeah I tested it on my last trip....) It smokes the ipod in all areas except for one thing......size....

Are DVDs ALREADY on their way out? It seems like they JUST came in, and it's just recently they stopped releasing every movie that came out in both DVD and VCR form.

Blu Ray is Sony's HD-DVD version, which because of liscensing bS by Sony will be not used, and the standard HD-DVD (already available in the Porn Industry) will be used.

And HD-DVD will win. Oddly, experience has shown us that whichever format the Porn Industry embraces will be the format the general public embraces: VHS, the switch to DVDs, and now the switch to HD-DVD is coming.

It gets technical beyond this but let me explain....

in order to get a theatrical movie on a regular sized DVD, it has to be compressed or 'squeezed' onto a DVD disk meaning you may experience a loss of quality picture and sound hence why some dvds have 4 and 5 disks

(like the lord of the rings extended edition where the main movie covers 2 disks alone)

Now putting a movie on Blu Ray or High Density DVD (HD DVD) means you can get everything that takes 4 or 5 disks to store all onto one or 2 disks and with little loss of quality.

here is the problem tho...Blu ray and HD DVD are duking it out betamax vs vhs stlye to see which will become the dominant form of next gen DVD watching...so dont rush out to get a player yet...not at least for another 3 years

Thank you for this explanation because I never knew what blu ray disk was. My daughter asked me and I couldn't tell her.

I don't know about that because Blockbuster announced a few weeks ago that they would be carrying Blu-Ray movies, NOT HD-DVDs in their stores.

Ok....bringing it back somewhat.....I went out and got a Zune to replace my iPod that was stolen earlier this year.....so far so good...it does just about everything my ipod did...but the one big up I like is the built in FM radio...but it still needs RSS and podcast support....

I don't plan on getting one of these for several reasons:

1) I'm too cheap
2) sometimes I like to "disconnect"- I don't want to be able to check my voicemail, e-mail, and play music all at the same time when I am at the park with my kids.

side story- we took our boys camping a few weeks ago, and a guy at the campsite next to us was sitting at the picnic table with his laptop out. Not sure if he was somehow able to get internet, but still- 9am on a Saturday at a state park campground and he is typing on a computer!

3) I don't use half the features on the Treo phone that work makes me carry around, so I am pretty sure I wouldn't use most of the features on an iphone.

Cheap doesn't have anything to do with it...I dont know too many people that have 600 bones they wanna spend like that right now...LOL

It's almost like the PS3...the most expensive gadget that's nice to look at but no one wants to rationalize spending money for!

2 things to note

i've been one of those guys following the news on the iphone since about 2 to 2.5 years ago when rumors starting springing, and then last year when the patent issued on the multisensor touch, and then last year when I first saw the microsoft surface inventor promo-ing his thing, I knew it was here....I simply do not have the money for it now, but I went to play with it today and it is gorgeous. The internet connection (which is the primary reason I'd want it) is slow, even with a decent wifi hotspot, but i still think it's worth it and come october i'll have one for sure (giving myself some time to work).

2. talking about hi-def media & porn....I find the statement ironic because the porn industry actually has a tendency to set the standard for which format is chosen. The porn industry decided to go with VHS, and shortly thereafter Beta tanked. While I was at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) this year, the porn show is the same weekend, and Sony gave a big "screw you" to the porn industry, saying that they were not going to allow pornography to be used with blu ray......when we heard that, we all said....Sony just shot itself in the foot.....incidentally, Blockbuster announced this week that it was going to host hd-dvd exclusively (i think owned by Toshiba, but don't quote me), rather than Blu-ray.....

Umm no it's not just a different version of HD-DVD. Don't talk about things you don't understand. The two products offer different advantages over each other, namely price vs. capacity.

And the real reason DVD is being killed is not just because of the HD issue but more because of the encryption/copyright issues that are floating. It's the reason why no upconverting DVD player plays copyrighted movies through composite connections but through HDMI. BR and HD-DVD have much more complex encryption schemes.

And stop spouting BS about the porn industry.

i heard a review of it on NPR this morning, and he was saying that AT&T's service is absolutely horrible and really slow (like, he said that without a Wi-fi hotspot, you'll wish you had dial-up its that slow)
whats the point of all the gadgetry if the main purposes (as a phone and internet) are basically inefficient...?
(he also said that making a call on the phone takes about 6 "touches/keystrokes"... that to me is ridiculous)

NPR interview

Why bash it if you don't understand it?

It works on AT&T edge which downloads at 25kbps, and some people even have commented that EDGE got a recent speed boost. It was designed to lock into wifi signals because the fact of the matter is that usually you can find a signal everywhere you go and because wifi uses much less energy and isn't a battery drain like 3G. On top of that 3G is expensive. Nobody pays for the service because of that expense. When it comes out in Europe they say it may link to the 3G networks because costs are lower there. So the speed thing is BS. It works great at loading internet pages.

And I'm not understand the 6 clicks thing. Making calls was really easy from my playing with it.

The only thing that's negative right now to me is the storage capacity. Nothing is perfect, but there are tons of positive reviews about it such as the one in the NYTimes and most people agree it's a great product.
