First, a little resume' recap, if you will: http://www.oscar.com/nominees/?pn=de...rectingNominee http://www.oscar.com/nominees/?pn=de...rectingNominee Secondly, it seems as though Clint sees the "writing on the wall". http://www.hollywood.com/news/Eastwo...s_Year/3656599 I respect him for what he said, but I take some exception to the sympathy aspect (it's a bit condescending, imho). Unfortunately, I haven't had the pleasure of seeing Letters from Iwo Jima yet since many Oscar-worthy films don't come 'round my way (I *HATE* it!). However, when I *do* get around to seeing it, I know I'll love it (for reasons Soror abaici mentioned, as well as reasons I listed in my post-nods recap on Facebook :p ). Will I like/love it more than The Departed? Maybe, maybe not (but, I don't like comparing such vastly different films as it is anyway). Regardless, that has no bearing on why I feel Scorsese should and will win on Sunday (and, I'm not saying that {solely} out of bias, sympathy, etc.). As much as I HATE it when the Academy hands out these so-called "body of work/career" Oscars (which is *partially* the case here), I feel it's very deserving in this instance. I'd rather see him win this way than to never win at all. I see it as a combination of sympathy and worth. I don't think Marty's going to win "just because" the Academy finally wants to "give" him an Oscar. The Departed is BAD@$$ (hence, why many critics {including yours truly :p } chose it as the top film of 2006 {or at least in the top 5 or top 10})!!! :D In a perfect world, politics (i.e. Oscar campaigning) and sentimentality would have no place in the Oscars, and all nominees, including the "Susan Luccis" like Scorsese, would win when they're "supposed" to (i.e. when he should've won for Raging Bull and/or Goodfellas). That's subjectivity and competition for ya (*shrugs shoulders*)! :o Some aren't so lucky. :( http://movies.aol.com/oscars-academy...e-kate-winslet http://www.fandango.com/Commentator....ource=ca_title Scorsese's peers have spoken; he's pretty much got it in the bag (remember: many DG members are also Academy members who vote on Best Director; the ballots were due yesterday, so it's as good as done). It's just time for someone else to have a piece of the Oscar pie (yes; I know that's never a legitimate reason to ever root for/against someone for anything, but enough already ). Again, just my opinion. And, with all that said, it's nice to "meet" other people who share my love of the Oscars and who can appreciate "good" cinema over all of the cr@p we're bombarded with at the movies on a regular basis. It's been real...off to bed I go... 4 MORE DAYS!!! :D |
