As has been said many times in above post, out side of each others little area, many were not known. Well untill GC for sure.

But, since then, I am much more familiar with many more than the few at my two colleges.

One of the greateast sites has been produced and worked on very hard by one of our own GC Members:

Check it out and see what is there!:D

Hands down, the most known GLO (note it makes no distinction as to specific type) is Phi Beta Kappa.

I would agree. It was also the first Greek Letter Organization in the U.S. (founded in 1776 at The College of William and Mary) and is so prestigious as an academic honorary that many people who have never been part of the Greek System -- or even gone to college recognize its name.

In terms of social fraternities, I would agree with Sigma Chi because of the song.

This is yet another situation where what campus and/or area you are from will form your opinion since not all campuses have the same organizations.

Here is a Phi Beta Kappa thread from ages ago

Oh--they are NOW an honor society. I hear their name often but didn't think "honor society" when I read the thread topic. Sure, PBK is well known but many people just throw the name around as a sign of prestige (i.e. "she's Phi Beta Kappa") without really knowing what the hell they're talking about.

(Like the people who saw my Crimson and Cream symbols on my car after I crossed and asked if I was a "Que Dog" or a Kappa.)

LOL... Just in Christmas someone asked me what Fraternity I was in...
What I hate is when they say, "oh, you're one of those (do the wrong call)" i just say, um, no!

The ones I knew before college were SigEp, TKE, Sigma Chi (because of "The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi," as others have said), AKA, and Tri-Delta.

You are 150% correct. Yes, hell yeah, A PHI A is the most widespread, most celebrated and most service driven BGLO/Fraternity in the world. It's chilly at the top, but somebody's got to do it.

AXCasey 12-27-2006 08:22 PM

Well, I'd never heard of Phi Beta Kappa until today...lol
Before I went to college the only sorority I had heard of was ADPi (my grandma is a sister) and I had heard of Kappa Alpha (my great uncle).

I'd have to agree with everyone else who pointed out that it's impossible to know what GLO is most widely known...Sigma Chi or Tri Delt might be a good bet though.

I assumed that Phi Beta Kappa would be listed in each organization's New Member Education manual since they were the first Greek letter society.

I know that there was a blurb on Phi Beta Kappa in mine.

WhiteDaisy128 12-27-2006 09:07 PM

I would say for Sororities Delta Delta Delta...mostly from the SNL clip...and for me, growing up in the south, Tri-Delta was always a dream for many little girls...

SigKapSweetie 12-27-2006 09:13 PM

Phi Beta Kappa is my non-greek mother's vote.

Tex1899 12-27-2006 09:28 PM

I'm going to go with Sigma Chi or Phi Beta Kappa ..."__________ graduated Phi Beta Kappa." I'd bet a lot of non-Greeks, and especially those who did not attend college, don't know what Phi Beta Kappa is.

Too bad Gerald Ford passed away. I wonder if DKE's going to do something to memorialize him?

IFC Fraternity- I want to nominate SigEp. Most people don't even name all 3 letters, because it seems that everyone knows what it is.

NPC Sorority- I think Tri-Delta due to the Saturday Night Live skit. The 3 same letters in a row make it easy to remember- while at the same time it has more chapters than the other 3 identical letter one.

Divine Nine Organization- Either AKA or Delta Sigma Theta.

WTF? The other 3 identical letter one? Hi, bastard redheaded stepchild!

What's a matter with simply saying Tri Sigma?

True, but there will be people who have never heard of Greeks of any sort. I would say Phi Beta Kappa is the most well known because it is known among social Greeks AND the academic community. Are there people who don't know what Phi Beta Kappa is? Of course. There is no GLO that EVERYONE knows about.
