I don't understand what's happening. In the past semesters there would be GLO members everywhere trying to recruit people and handing out fliers and stuff, but right now school campus is totally dead. There isn't anyone in the campus. I wonder if anyone will be recruting this semester. The semester starts in 4 days and there is absolutely no sign of "greek life" anywhere in the campus, except for empty chapter houses outside of the campus. It's hard to tell what's going on.

:( There's probably more restrictions on rusher/rushee contact at your new school--contact regarding recruitment probably happens at a specific time and place. That would be my guess.

If all else fails and you're not finding anything out, contact the Greek Life/IFC advisor at your school and ask them how to find out about spring rush.

Thanks for advices. I think rush starts on wednesday so there will be people wearing colors on that day.

If a chapter runs 7 events in 7 nights in an informal rush, do I have to be present in all 7 events in order to receive a bid? One of the events of a house that I'm interested in clashes with one of my classes. I can still make it for the rest 6 events though.

at some point the fraternity may have an invitation only event-usually toward the end of the recruitment period. if the 7 events are all open events, and you are still feeling it for this fraternity, as event #6 nears, tell the president and the rush chairman that you will not be able to attend #6, due to a class conflict.

don't go in on the first night and tell this group about your class conflict-it might come off as you are assuming that you will still be around at that point in time. and honestly, you might end up not gelling with this fraternity and might not want to attend any more parties there. just give yourself a little time.

No, you do not need to attend all seven. If I were you, I would attend the first two or three nights at each house and then see what happens. If the guys want you, they will make a point to invite you back each night. At that point, you can tell them that you would love to, but you have class. On the other hand, if you don't get that sort of vibe, you may consider exploring your other options.

My thoughts on snap bids:

If you know you want it, take it. I got myself into a tight spot because I didn't accept immediately when I knew I wanted to. (that's a good story for another thread)

Co-sign with all of these. Since there are seven nights of events, as a reminder I'm reposting something I wrote earlier regarding bids.

And don't tell XYZ that you are still going to check out ABC and DEF after they extend you a bid. Keep it simple and just thank them and let them know you will get back with them by the indicated time. Depending on the campus, and how the IFC rush is structured, a chapter may be able to resend their bid to you. And might do so if they feel you are not interested in them. The chapter that extended you a bid can get this impression (that you aren't interested) if they find out you are hanging out at other chapters and not coming around to their parties.

Rush starts tomorrow and my final decision is to rush for 5 fraternities. I'll name them after 5 continents.

America
Africa
Asia
Australia
Europe

It's the combination of two continents, so it oughta count...sort of...kind of...eh, it works. Good luck, HereICome!

I'm kind of disappointed right now. I had a favorite chapter before the rush started which was "America" but now I don't like them at all. Today in the campus all fraternities had stands and they were handing out brochures, fliers and cards with information about their rush events while this one chapter didn't have any fliers or any information on their events. They had like 8 guys wearing their colors standing there chatting amongst their selves and whenever someone approached them to ask questions or anything they wouldn't even bother stopping chatting with each other and answering questions. Ironically these guys claim to be the first and only "non-secret" fraternity in the nation. I doubt they want to recruit anyone this semester.

I know what fraternity you're talking about, and they're not the only non-secretarian fraternity in the NIC, there are two, the other is AKL. I don't really see what being anti-social has to do with not having any secrets, though. But comming to a new school, you may like the way a fraternity sounds on a website, but you can never know how the guys are going to be until you've met them. I'm sure they do want to recruit people, no fraternity will ever voluntarily not recruit, to do so is stupid move and will kill their numbers, not matter how many guys they already have. Don't be dissapointed, they may act totally different once you go to one of their events. If not, you still said your were interested in four other fraternities, you have other options.

Yes you are right. I might attend to one or two events they are running just to see how they are but I have no idea when their events are and what they are. I know where their house is though.

No offense, but if they blew you off when you visited their table during rush, why would you be interested in kissing their you-know-what? They should be showing their best side right now. Go after one of the fraternities that at least acknowledges your presence!

In parts of the world, America is taught as just the one continent and not the two that we refer to it as here in the USA. It's also common to only teach that there are five continents, and not seven, because some nations do not consider Antarctica as a continent either.
