Welcome to greekchat noobishactz...post more often and you will have a fun stay.

In regards to Borat....
....I actually thought the movie was pretty good. I wouldnt say it was brilliante, but it is definately one of the funniest movies I have EVER seen. I hate low brow humor (cant stomach Jackass) but for some reason it works in this movie. Whoever put it together was smart....and most of the funny parts were NOT shown in the commercials...there's NO WAY they could show that on TV.

As for Psi Chi....that isnt the fraternity in question....its Chi Psi. I have met a few Chi Psis and they seemed like nice guys. The guys in Borat were tools...we'll leave it at that.

I think the point of the movie wasnt to target Chi Psi more then it was to make all fraternity guys look bad.

I wonder what their nationals will do.

I finally went to see the movie. Mostly because I read the this post and I wanted to see it in the first place. I know this is kind of not on topic here right now but if you did not see the movie it is not worth it, Wait for the DVD because all the funny parts were shown in the commercials.

Now getting back to Psi Chi. We dont have a Chapter of them down in Hawaii. I am a newly intiated Kappa Sigma brother and I really do see this as a downer for Fraternities a like. I already took critisism from friends about joining a fraternity because we dont have the greatest labels and some guys have to do something like this on a movie. Let alone talking about the subject matters they did.

It's true. I'm not surprised at all by what happened. The Lodgers at my school have been on probation for unruly parties and everything that comes with that. And they were dirty. They would often rent huge hot tubs and be the only people in them (I have yet to see one girl joining them). The water would be black. Anyway, yeah, the reputation of an org can be tarnished by one group of guys at one school. Heck, Lodgers at other schools could be the cleanest, most politically correct gentlemen out there but in the Greek world, the exception can easily become the rule.

Well yeah not all the funny parts were shown in the commercials. But they also did have a special on Comedy Central were they did show a lot. And some of the scenes were much more funny on Comedy Centrals Special that they did not show in the movie.

Sorry about getting the name mixed up. I am not saying that the fraternity is bad it is just a bunch a tools that make it bad for the rest. Just as some schools call my fraternity "Kappa Pigs" because of some tools that mess it up. At UHM we are the largest Fraternity and the only one that gets stuff done.

Just as people label this one chapter as the whole fraternity because non-greek people do not understand what it is like being in a fraternity/sorority. This also does make the greek life as a whole look bad in some perspective.

I am glad to read that Chi Psi's Nationals did not appreciate this and does acknowledge that these were just some guys not a representive of the fraternity.

I dont remember them wearing letters either so the only way they were marked in the movie was by the Title stating where they were from.

It looks like some of the guys are now suing.

DSTCHAOS 11-09-2006 10:55 PM

They were assured the movie wouldn't be shown in the U.S. and their identities wouldn't be revealed. They signed the release after heavy drinking. Then they were encouraged to continue drinking.

If they were indeed misled, that would be typical of a prankster. Maybe the movie producers should've done what Girls Gone Wild does and allow people to call in the next day and refuse to be shown or whatever--or maybe not. They weren't too drunk to remember that they were told the movie wouldn't be released in the U.S and their identities wouldn't be revealed. So I imagine they weren't too drunk to watch their words altogether and/or decline any type of participation.

I believe that the release specifically states that you are agreeing to the terms written on the release regardless of what ever else they tell you. The alcohol is another issue.
This article talks about suing Borat and shows the release. It's pretty airtight.

Borat tricked me. Can I sue?

I actually was a Lodger at U of M (alumn) and you are an idiot for making this statement. You have absolutely no clue what you are talking about and I'm sure your whole statement is based off of what you've heard from other people. We were on probation because they essentially wanted to make an example out of us (Mike Lovas is a jackass). They claimed we had a keg on our front porch but it was 1919 rootbeer for a rush event. The hot tub we had was nothing like what you described. Next time you're going to bad mouth us mention our GPA, which is always in the top 3 for fraternities, and that our fratnerity has the highest donation % back to the U of M.

As far as these guys from SC, they're idiots. I saw the movie last night and my friend and I were just embarassed by what these guys said/did. I know they are filing a lawsuit about how the producers made them drink, etc.. but that is still no excuse.

I'd challenge the "made them drink" part. Bought them drinks? Probably. Encouraged them to drink? Almost certainly. But held them down while pouring beer and whiskey down their throats or held a gun to their head until they did it themselves? I don't think so.

I guess it's only fair that you defend your chapter. :D

Sidebar:
Since you are an alum maybe you weren't present/know about the dirty hot tub that Phrozen's talking about. LOL. And why blast him for mentioning your probation when the only retort you have is that you were "made an example of...something about rootbeer" as if anyone else would know about that. Besides most chapters that get into trouble have an "explanation" behind it that may or may not be completely true. High GPAs and high donations don't fit into the point he was making--that some of you were dirty and got in trouble, which could shape some folks' perceptions of your fraternity.

Here's what their nationals did... Took them a few days but better late than never...

http://www.chipsi.org/news/borat.shtml
"The Fraternity takes this matter seriously and intends to address it through its established internal processes in conjunction with the University of South Carolina and the local chapter."

I think signing a release form while under the influence (drunk, high) voids the contract. I remember hearing something about that for Girls Gone Wild and thats why they do the thing where you can call in the next day, because most these girls have been drinking heavily and GGW knows that the contract wouldn't hold up in court. Especially if they are underage.

stooge1970 11-10-2006 04:22 PM

These guys pretty much say it all...

These three idiots in Borat did a wonderful job of portraying the average frat boy. And now they wanna sue because the movie's making millions and they're portrayed as the male pigs that they are. These guys are the embodiment of the fraternity system-- bagging on minorities, bagging on women. Oh, that's right-- they were drunk, so its okay. It kind of strikes me as funny that these three big tough fraternity boys are now suing for emotional distress and whatever else they're calling it. Sexist racist losers with big mouths. Though, I'm sure they'll be embraced by the majority of the fraternity system as heroes. Always love to see a system such as this torn apart so we can see what's really inside.

Whatever. I've been extremely involved with U of M greek life since my frosh year so I know what I'm talking about. I meant what I said and I'm not taking any of it back. The picture of the hot tub was on the cover of the Daily. It was disgusting. If your chapter was so great you'd say that you are a Lodger, and not were a Lodger. You proved my point really well. But I have better things to do than kick the U of M's sorry excuse for an IFC while its down. Have a great day. Go Gophers...

That's not necessarily the case, particularly where the other party relies on your statement and takes action (like releasing a movie) based on that reliance.

Let's say you got wasted, and you spent $5000 on bottles of Cristal for all your friends. Do you think you could tell MasterCard the next day, "I was drunk when I signed the credit card receipt promising to pay; the contract is void"? You wouldn't get very far with that argument. It's not MasterCard's job to make sure that you're making a smart decision about whether to sign. Unless they secretly drugged you, or you're a minor, you have to pay.

Wow, what a moronic, ignorant post. I'm going to assume that you are a loser GDI.

You obviously have little knowledge of anything fraternity if you think those douchebaggish fags are the embodiment of the fraternity system. Those guys are the laughing stock of the The South, without question. I wouldn't give those guys the time of day, nor would I let them step foot in my fraternity house.
