At my school it depends on the chapter. Many fraternities and two sororities do jerseys with nicknames (top of back), pledge class (Right shoulder), and chapter (left shoulder), some fraternities also do scroll numbers (mid-lowerback). Most sororities on campus don't allow nicknames on formal jerseys because some of them can get down right inappropriate or are something very informal and just within the chapter or not considered appropriate by nationals, etc. If you want your nickname on something, you'd do a family shirt or another jersey or something like that. Plus it looks nice to have your formal jersey as the one thing you all own that looks exactly the same front and back. (For pictures and things).

So NPHC is not the only one that may put a nickname on a jersey, it just depends on the school.

Quite true -- another example of how situations in particular schools (including my own) cannot always be generalized. (That's why I used "I've rarely seen . . . .")

But it would seem from your use of "formal jersey" that at your school it is still called a jersey even if it lacks numbers, nicknames, etc. That was really my point -- that in my experience the embroidered-letter shirt is called a jersey regardless of whether it has anything other than letters on it or not.

I don't understand that. I worked hard to be a Nupe, and I would be really angry if I saw someone wearing my letters and wasn't a member. They didn't earn the letters so they shouldn't wear them.
