I totally sugar strawberries if they are going to go on shortcake or something... and if I'm just eating them I'll sugar them if they are sour. I enjoy soaking Pineapple in Malibu too ... =)

As someone said putting a litle salt on melons that aren't very sweet improves the flavor.

Strawberries--dip first in sour cream, then in brown sugar--yummy.

That's the first I've heard of that, but it sounds REALLY good.

How does making something salty make it taste sweeter?

I mean if I pour salt in my coke at lunch, it'll taste sweeter?

Strawberries are really good if you cut off the stems, cut them in half, put them in a big bowl and sprinkle sugar over them, and store in the fridge for a day or so until you get yummy sweet strawberries and juice -- SO GOOD over vanilla ice cream.

That's exactly how we do our strawberries too!

I put salt on my watermelon. If it's fresh and really ripe, it doens't need it but those you get at the very begining and end of the season need it.
I also put salt on my Granny Smith apples. That I learned from my dad. It's abou the only way I like to eat them.
As far as strawberries go, put as much sugar on them as possible and pop them in the fridge. I love eating them with all the juice and them whipped cream (the canned stuff please). Come to think of it, I actually like a little strawberry with my whipped cream in the summer. But I love eating the really tart, firm strawberries with out anything on them.
I also love eating white rice with plenty of sugar and butter. That I've been doing for as long a I can remember.

Salt is a flavor enhancer. The idea is not to put so much on that it tastes salty, jut enough to bring out the natural flavor. :D

Same reason many people put salt in their beer.

and coronas. ;)

i'm from cali - but my family's from oklahoma/texas, so i've grown up putting salt on bland melons and adding sugar to strawberries.

someone earlier mentioned cutting strawberries, adding sugar and putting them in the fridge... i do that, and add just a tad bit of water, which mixes really nicely with the natural juice the strawberries release.

I sugar my strawberries too.

(not from the South either......)

I put sugar on my strawberries as well and I'm from the Canadian west coast - I think it's a British thing, because I learned it from both my grandmothers (who are both English).

Here's a combo I know most of you will find weird: gravy with fries instead of ketchup - it tastes so good! - very common in Canada.

For the life of me, I'm having the hardest time figuring out how this would work. Today at lunch I almost ordered a coke but then realized if I put salt in it, I'd get fired for being weird :(

Speaking of sweet/salty...my friend's kid had this "Munchies" stuff...it was Doritos and Cheetos and Pretzels and also Captain Crunch. That just sounds disgusting. I mean, everything else but the Capt Crunch sounds ok together. But I'm not a big fan of that cereal to begin with, so that could be it too.

BobbyTheDon 04-27-2006 03:38 PM

I like funyans yo. Those are salty and yummy
