Well in my high school, there are three levels: freshmen, junior varsity and varsity. Freshmen can only be on the freshmen squad. Sophomores, juniors and seniors can be on either JV or varsity. However, seniors can't be on JV.

I'm glad that they don't have stick figure cheerleaders (i.e. Ashley).

BTW, if they do another season, I think they should do a co-ed squad.

I hope that this show proves that cheerleading is tough and not by popularity alone. Gymnastics ability is essential for everyone wanting to tryout, especially in the southern schools, who are the majority of the competitors for national championship.

Cheer is really big business in some of the southern states. I remember watching the commentary or features (something) for Bring It On. The writers said they got the idea from watching the National competitions and doing research. In some (I'm not saying all) of these southern schools the CHEERLEADERS are the BEST sports team the school has! Which is probably true. If you're taking a team to the nationals that team has a reputation of being one of the best and they have worked their asses off to get there.

More and more colleges now are offering Cheer scholarships because people are starting to realize that cheerleading is a sport and that those women (and men) work their butts off.

I'm glad it's being taken more seriously even though I myself never cheered. I just know a lot of friends who did and it's definitely a sport. This show is all I hear about so hopefully it will bring some well-deserved attention to the sport!

I TiVo'd this show and watched it for the first time tonight...and yeah, I think I'm hooked now. I guess it's because growing up in our house cheerleading was what you did, so it's all familiar to me. Thank goodness I got out of it really early on, though--I feel sorry for those poor girls on the show!

It's cool watching my town on TV, though.

Is it common for squads to cheer in the track suits that they were wearing during the football game? They wore those to school too. My high school's squad never did that. Even if was 30 degrees out they were in the pleated skirts. They'd wear the turtlenecks when it was cold. And their letter jackets when they weren't actually cheering.

They did at my high school. When it was 10 degrees out, they were glad for those!

They did at mine as well. Towards the end of the season especially, when it gets cold AND rainy. Though sometimes they wore their track pants under the skirt, which I thought just looked plain stupid.

No sense being cold and miserable and risk getting sick just to show some leg.

Caught it for the first time last night.. Talk about PRESSURE. Poor Ayrica. :(

I really admire Amanda's confidence. She is exceptional, esprcially being the only freshman on Varsity.

Ayrica= FABULOUS.

I know Katie's full is not entirely solid, but again, the fact that she is picking up on it in one season is great.

Chelsea and Kaitlyn both have caught the dreaded SENIORITIS. And I also think that growing apart from Nicole is afffecting Chelsea's perfomance as well.

Fun fact: Both Saleem from Dunbar and the coach they showed from Tate's Creek Jomo Thompson are former University of Kentucky cheerleaders, the winningest squad in college cheer history. They both had brief stints as Kentucky assistant coaches and choreographers. (my mom is a coach in our area and a former Florida State cheerleader so it's amazing the stuff I learn)

The regional that Dunbar competes in is the most difficult of all the regions UCA has. There is SO much talent in the KY area. I can name at LEAST 10 squads in that regional that gave Dunbar a definte run for their money.

Greenup County High is one of the schools in Kentucky that really challenge Dunbar.

BTW, Tennessee, Louisana, Alabama, Florida, Texas, and Kentucky are the southern states that are big on cheerleading.

Mine, too. When my oldest sister was cheering, though, that was before the day of track suits so they just wore sweat pants under their skirts.

Yay! I had no idea my high school I cheered for was going to be on the show (Tates Creek). Granted, I didn't graduate from there, but still. How fun!!

Did anyone else notice they messed up the name when Saleem was talking and said Katie was Kaitlin?

Katie and Aryica are my faves. I love Ryan too.

Chelsea annoys me, but I dislike Ashley the most. Something about her just rubs me the wrong way...

I didn't think Chelsea was a senior though...?

It is! I wanted this bag for my birthday a while back and I saved money for a long time for it. Well not that long, but I have a hard time saving. Anyway, I ended up getting a bigger tote bag and seeing the bag on the show makes me want it again.

When did you cheer at Tates Creek? I know a ton of girls that were on the squad there.

I was curious about something, Dana, and maybe you could help me out?

On another message board I go to, people were mentioning in their posts that the girls on the Dunbar squad were all from rich families because of the size of the houses they show. Other people were saying that, because Lexington is *relatively* inexpensive (compared to San Fransisco, Boston, etc.), families with houses like that wouldn't necessarily be wealthy.

Are you familiar with the area in which these girls live?
