A year ago I would have agreed -- and still do but not as strongly. Our armed forces can't continue to prosecute the war in Iraq indefinitely the way it's being done now.
Recruitments are down dramatically in the active services. Guard and Reserve units are stressed as "Citizen Soldiers" are called on for extended active duty. That causes serious problems on the job and family front. Maybe we had it right in WWII when soldiers were sent "for the duration." Get it overwith and go home. Of course that's another thing that wouldn't fly today. We got used to the "year" (give or take) tour, especially in Viet Nam. Some of us who went through that experience worried out loud before this conflict began that it could end up as it has. Our troops have been magnificent, but massive firepower and high tech wepons don't work well against terrorists with car bombs. Despite what McNamara says, I don't think we can afford an ever shrinking fighting force. If things don't change, I'm not sure anymore that a draft is out of the question. I certainly hope I'm wrong. |
Living here and having close relations to Fort Bragg I have not heard one person that is currently inlisted that has said anything about the draft. And maybe not so many are inlisting as usual but you have to remember we are using our military in a huge effort in Iraq and that scares potentials b/c it means that what they would be trained for will most likly be put to use and the probability of them being in for four years and leaving without having to play solider for real isn't a possibility anymore.
The men and women in our military are very strong peolpe. They do a job that I propbably couldn't do and for that I respect all of them. Also being in the military and having to actually fight for this country shouldn't deter peolpe from inlisting, that is the reason we have a military in the first place it is part of their oath. Anything this country will do to keep fighting abroad I am in favor for. |
Our People are strong in The Military.
# 1 there are not enough. Our Govt. cut it back so damn bad, that Now they/we are taking Researves/National Guardsmen/Women from their Familys and Jobs. Yes, young People have to sign up for the Selective Service. The US Govt. has not implemented doing a draft as of Yet! OK Granted the Weekend Warriors want to play Soldier, well, they are now!l:( If this shit Keeps heating up, wait and see. Selective Service is in place. |
Wait a minute!
Bush didn't pledge to reform Social Security in his campaign, he vowed to demolish it. |
