We were popular with the women's crew team too when I was there. I was on drill team for two years in HS. |

I wasn't a cheerleader in high school. A lot of the current chapter was involved in cheer in HS. But when I rushed, only a few were. Lots of other sports, but not so much dance/cheer.

I never really have been a very peppy person. I played tennis in HS but was definitely not a cheerleader. Just wasn't my thing. However, several of my sisters were cheerleaders in HS or were on their school dance team. Several of them also do pageants and have for many years.

i played sports in high school, but not in college. we had a couple of cheerleaders or girls on the dance squad in my chapter, but that didnt last very long. there really isnt enough time to do both. my pledge sister that was a cheerleader left the chapter and the sister that danced quit that i think. i couldnt imagine having enough time in college to be in a sorority and on a varsity sport!! a lot of us girls did intramurals though if that counts!! i agree with cashmoney that people on the varsity teams dont really need greek life. they already have that sense of belonging with their team.

On the guys side of our team, last year, 3 out of our 5 guys were in the same fraternity. One of them left school, we got a new guy from Ohio State to row for us (we're a club team), and our Coxswain and Bowman pledged and were initiated. We have a boat full of Kingsmen! (and I wouldn't have it any other way...theyre all awesome). |
KillarneyRose, I could never do a proper cartwheel either! So I wasn't a cheerleader, and my HS didn't have a dance team for sporting events, but we DID have a dance troupe, which I was in. We had a huge show every spring:) Gosh i loved my dance troupe, but I stopped dancing when I got to college:(

Pop Warner Cheerleader 1985-1993
Damien Memorial HS 1993 (our brother school) St. Louis School 1994-1997 (another brother school) University of Hawaii Warrior Dance Team 1997-2000 I pledged Alpha Gam my Junior Year. I'm pretty sure I could have stayed a dancer till my eligibility was up and be a member. We'd perform at all football games in the Fall and basketball games in the Spring. We had fundraisers every other month so technically it was another sorority in itself, but I never really found it demanding because I had tons of fun. It's funny, we weren't associated with the cheerleaders or the Athletic Department. We were associated with the band. True we didn't do flips and tumbling and stunts, but we still conditioned ourselves to the bone. It's a good thing we had partial tuition waivers. I quit because all my close friends either graduated or left school and I couldn't stand the bitches that came in after that. Then I found Alpha Gam. :) |

I think athletics and being a member of a GLO are in the same vein as working, going to school and being a member of a GLO. It's different for each person at any given school. Some people can handle, and even thrive, on the pressure and time management skills needed. Some people can't. And some people never get the opportunity to try because the Athletics Department (or their coaches) at their school (including all divisions of NCAA) don't allow it.
Though I'm sure it differs with each school, I've observed Cheerleading/dance can be just as athletic as many other sports. They still practice and train every day. They may not have the force or size or speed associated with other sports, but they still need strength and stamina to do what they do. |
Oddly enough, I was the stoner with hair every color of the rainbow in high school. I finally started acting & looking like a girl in my junior year but by my senior year, I was hanging around in jeans & shirts. Nothing fancy.
I was not a cheerleader but I did run track, play volleyball & softball. |
Take me out of my ignorance, please...
Tell me what is the difference between Cheerleader and Dance Team. Neither of them is a big deal in Canada, so everything I know about it, I saw on "Bring It On" or the cheerleading events that you see on TSN or ESPN.
I'm confident I know what Cheerleading is, so what is Dance Team? Is that more what NBA "cheerleaders" do at half-time (for example, the Laker Girls?) Please and thank you. :) |
