I think where the confusion lies is that even though little sister groups are pretty much outlawed today, they do still exist "unofficially" on many campuses.

I think these are the names that OP was looking for.

I can't remember what the KA little sisters were called on my campus, but as carebearwcu mentioned, they did have their KA Rose who was the "head" little sister.

Granted, people who are not in that GLO (and, a few of the brothers in that GLO), will still sometimes refer to these little sister groups as frat rats, house whores, XYZ whores, etc., when this is not necessarily true of all of these women (sure, there are some).

I think roqueemae's comment was totally uncalled for.

Edited for further clarification:
Not all little sisters were frat rats, and not all frat rats were little sisters. Sometimes the members of the little sister groups would make fun of the girls that hung out w/ the fraternity but weren't little sisters...and call them house whores. :p

Most of the time the "Rose" or "Sweetheart" (head little sister) WAS a little sister -- she was just the one that was chosen to be included in the composite since she received the honor.

Another difference is these little sister groups could wear letters, put the fraternity's sticker on their car, etc., whereas a plain old frat rat cannot.

At Roanoke, KA's pledge class sweethearts are called magnolias and the chapter sweetheart is called the Rose.

At W&L, there is no such practice with the Alpha Chapter of KA.

That hasn't been my experience...

i graduated in '99, but my actaul little brother was a KA, so they asked me to be a "southern Belle." i guess they don't do that anymore? i had such a good time with those guys--lots of "responsibilities," but lots of fun too!!!

When I was in school in the 80s, they were called Southern Belles. Now that little sister groups are forbidden, I would doubt they would call women anything that could be construed as confering "little sisterhood" on them.
As a sidenote, the little sisters of my ex-husband's Sigma Chi chapter ended up founding the Delta Gamma chapter at our university. If you want a name or letters, do it for yourself and join a GLO that will be interested in developing you personally.:)

Please, do elaborate on these "responsibilities"...

don't be sarcastic  i know a lot of girls who have a large group of friends in the same fraternity and the "responsibilities" are nothing like what you just implied.

OP: we call them groupies at me school...the girls we call groupies are the ones that constantly try to rep a frat just because she's been accepted there. keep it moving honey, don't be a KA groupie! i don't see anything wrong with being close with a particular frat because that's just who you hang out with, but if you want to be greek, don't live vicariously through KA. find a GLO that fits you!

Given the honorary memberships of Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, Phi Mus have the best claim to being "Daughters of Lee" or "Southern Belles"!!!

these girls tend to be the long-term girlfriends of one of the members and are recognized as such. the girls who just "hang out" tend to get a bad reputation, deserved or not.

Right, I'm not stupid. I knew what she meant, it was just funny how the phrase accidentally came across and I wasn't being sarcastic.

I like this advice. And it can sometimes be hard for a girl herself to know when her reputation may be slipping from one category (admired and honored friend of the group) to another (frat rat, groupie, etc.) since the distinctions aren't often based on real behavior but perceptions. Making sure you define yourself first with your own efforts and achievements is never a bad idea!
