Oldest Fraternity

I am part of the Oldest Fraternity in Michigan and one of the oldest in the entire country. Our house is Phi Alpha Pi and we were established in 1847 three years after our college was founded. It is located at Olivet College in Olivet Michigan. Our clolors are Blue and White and our motto is "Progress, Truth, and Friendship"

My boyfriend is in a local fraternity at Hope College (Phi Kappa Alpha/Cosmopolitan) and their motto is very similar.... "Friendship, Progress, and Truth." :)

(And while they're certainly not the oldest local around, they're one of the best!!)

It's true! I didn't go to Hope. But the Cosmos love to give me a hard time about being in a non-local. ;)

This is great!! Pi Sig..............We tend to Rule!!

We meant Oldest on campus. But it is also qualified by:

No Name change.
Uninterrupted campus presence.
No merging with other organizations.
Never been associated with a National.

And we are the "Finest"!http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/icons/icon12.gif

Oldest Local

Lambda Iota Fraternity founded at the University of Vermont in 1836, is the oldest local. It was offered by many nationals to become a chapter because of the character and traditions they represented however; the Society elected to stay local and maintains strong membership and all its traditions.

That's what I thought. I remember that from my time at UVM, before I transferred.

Though I wouldn't call it a fraternity in the sense you probably mean, the Jefferson Society (Phi Pi Theta) at Virginia was founded in 1825 and claims to be the oldest continually operating GLO in America. Apparently, Phi Beta Kappa is older but was disbanded at some point.

Lambda Iota was one of my (and my sisters) favorite houses to hang out at when I was at UVM!

Noiceee!

Founded at Yale University in 1895, Pi Lambda Phi was the first non-sectarian fraternity in the United States, accepting men of good character without regard to race or religion.

Holla! hhaha. random fact.

Oldest Greek Letter sorority

Phi Nu Society of MacMurray College was created in 1853 and is still going strong! Never went national, never will go national. :) They have run continuously since the first class pledged. There was another sorority created on that campus before Phi Nu, but they are not Greek Letter affiliated and they have had at least one, possibly two, periods of inactivity lasting at least 4 years.
