You know, aside from the issue of racism which, as a black american, is very significant to me, there is also the fact that the confederacy sought to secede from the Union and demolish the nation that so many people fought to create through the Revolutionary War. I think it is very disrespectful to try to cover up both the horrific legacy of human bondage AND the attempt to break up the Union with this shroud of "honoring their heritage". I understand that people have ancestors who died in the civil war, but think about what they died for. There is no dignity or honor in the fact tha these people died trying to hang on to some shred of a systematic regime of white supremacy. It's actually rediculous and it should have never had to come to a war.

People tell black people everyday that they need to just "get over the past". Well those confederate loving people are the ones who need to get over the past. What's really ironic is that these people that fly that flag, particularly in the south, do so honoring the most historic form of domestic treason while claiming to be so damned patriotic!

Wow. That is interesting. Hell yeah its a part of history, and the part of history its about IS American racism.

Not all southerners are racists, nor is everyone a racist that flies, wears, or owns a confederate flag or design.......To say that everyone that has one or wears one or whatever is a racist is ignorant, and I'm not commenting further about this issue.

Who said that? I sure didn't. It wouldn't make sense for me to say such a thing anyway since I was born in the south, my entire family is from the south and plenty of the people I know are from the south and none of them are racists. If you RE-READ my post, I referred to what that flag symbolizes. So, I guess that actually makes YOU ignorant since you failed to gather adequate information before you shooting your mouth (fingers) off.

Cool, it'd probably be best if you didn't. ;)

Why am I a bitch? I believe in gay rights. I don't think a gay rights shirt is the same as what I said. Some people are offended by black people or Puerto Ricans or Mexicans or the mafia, but I believe they have every right to wear a shirt depicting those things, as long as there isn't anything that would offend the general public (rude sayings, stuff like that).

Oh yeah that's right. Same with VA but we didn't take our part back, because I guess we had prinicepled people in the Assembly back then. Not anymore though.

me wearing a gay pride shirt and that fat chick wearing a confederate flag are 2 sides of the same coin. By saying she shouldnt wear it, you're trying to deface one side of the coin.

She should have made a Bonnie Blue dress.

Do we have any history majors here...?

There were a lot of issues involved in the Civil War/Confederates. Hell, it goes all the way back to before the Constitution was written. The main reason for that the South left was because they were very anti-federalist. They wanted greater state powers, while the northerners wanted a stronger centeral gov't. Hell, 'a' civil war was averted many times before 1860. There was a lot of tension there for over 40 yrs. Slavery was involved in it-but don't think that those in the north really cared about slaves. The immigrants that passed through New York Cities harbor were treated just as bad.

That is vast simplifying the entire issue-but the key issue was their views on gov't. That is what sparked the Civil War. The Confederate Flag represents southern culture and history, not slavery or racisim.

For one, do not call me a bitch. Do not call that girl fat. Cuz then I'll be forced to call u a fag, which is a word that I hate and never use considering the fact that I have a few gay friends and my favorite cousin is gay. So can you please watch your terminology? Because you're just making yourself look like a dumbass. Why would you use derogatory terms when you're trying to argue a point?

Iowa, lay of the personal attack.

Well, since you seem to be favoring censorship, I'll assume you're crazy.

Also: Tinker vs. Des Moines.

School administration retards violated her right to wear her dress.
Fire the bastards, give her money, case closed.

I'm not actually favoring censorship. I'm saying that if the school admin told her not to wear it, she shouldn't have worn it. And, it is nowhere near the same as students wearing gay pride clothing.

I would've gone with the hoop skirt instead. The only thing is that if I sat down everyone would see my underwear. And I would accessorize with a bonnet.

LOL! Hoops collapse when you press on them. You can sit down. And, now I'm off to bed!

Hmm...so a girl can go half-naked to her prom (you know the dresses I'm talking about) yet because of the design on this dress this girl can't?

Taualumna 12-27-2004 02:24 AM

Personally, I don't think anyone should be wearing anything that resembles a flag of any kind, at least in the form of a prom dress. It's kind of tacky.
