Does anyone have a recipe for chocolate-covered coconut balls? I ADORE them--my grandmother used to make them and no one got her recipe when she passed on. :(

Chess pie...ah yes, the only dessert that the cooks at Mississippi State seemed to be able to make for banquets. I went to 3 straight sorority banquets in a week there, had chess pie at every one, and I swear my teeth hurt for days.

Our oldest girls come home from college this week! BAKING PAAARRRTYYY!

Carnation, are you talking about the cookies that a lot like macaroons covered in chocolate? Lord forgive me for being a squeal, but I had one aunt who just could NOT cook - but she thought she was great at it! The only good thing she ever made was macaroons, so when anything came up, we'd IMMEDIATELY beg her to make those (so she wouldn't make anything else!).

These weren't cookies--more like candy. I'll never forget the time I flew home with some of that candy she was sending with me and she'd wrapped each piece individually in foil and the box set off the metal detector in the airport. I had to unwrap the box and each little piece for the inspector.

Sugar cookies!!!!!! :D (frosted or topped with powdered sugar)
Bourbon balls (technically not a cookie, but only eaten around Christmas in my family)
Gingerbread men!!!

AOIIsilver, I LOVE chess pie too! Memories...

Ask, and you shall receive :) This is my grandma's receipe, and she makes a double batch every time she makes them.

Swedish Icebox Cookies (Doubled Receipe)
4 cups flour
1 cup powdered sugar
4 sticks butter
2 tsp vanilla

Mix dough. Divide and roll into rols about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Roll in colored sugar, nuts, etc. Put in refrigerator for about 2 hours. Slice and bake about 10 minutes in 350 degree F oven.

I made these today for the DZ cookie exchange. AWESOME.

I'm also a big fan of Amish sugar cookies-great to use with some colored homeade icing. They're not crisp like most sugar cookies-they almost have a cake-like texture. So good!

The flour cookies covered in powdered sugar are called Russian Tea Cookies or Mexican Wedding Cakes. I have heard them called both. My mom makes them every christmas and I want to eat all of them. They are so good. Also she makes these chocolate balls covered in powdered sugar...they are really good too.

Yeah, chess pie... O come all ye faithful to the pie...

Sweet Potato Pie with a bit of rum

Spiced Tea with a bit of bourbon

Irish Whiskey Cake--never made, purchased from Neiman's

and Red Velvet Cake...

Last but not least, Sugar Cookies for Santa... Use Butter Nut Vanilla rather than plain vanilla to give it more "umph"...

And I going to try Extra Dark Chocolate Girahdelli's Truffle Recipe that was advertised in the newspaper...

And I have a pizzelle iron--gonna try to make pizzelles this year--we'll see if I have the time...

Were these the ones made with confectioner's sugar, coconut, walnuts, and condensed milk? We used to call them Martha Washingtons, I think. Haven't made them since high school!

My grandmother used to make the best divinity. I attempted a batch last night, and it came out like blobs of marshmallow fluff with pecans on top. :( Anyone have any tips, or a recipe they can share?

Edited to add recipe, from southernfood.com:

Martha Washington Candy

INGREDIENTS:

2 pounds sifted confectioners' sugar
1 can sweetened condensed milk
2 cups flaked coconut
1 stick butter or margarine, melted (4 ounces)
3 cups chopped pecans
Dipping Chocolate (below), melted

PREPARATION:

Mix all ingredients together, shape into balls, then chill until hard. Dip chilled balls in dipping chocolate and let cool.
Store in airtight container in refrigerator.
Dipping Chocolate
Use melted chocolate almond bark or purchased dipping chocolate, or the mixture below

1 cake paraffin wax
12 ounces milk chocolate chips
Melt wax and milk chocolate chips together in double boiler.

Snickerdoodles all the way.

there is a really easy way to make them too...just buy the sugar cookie balls in the store....make a mixture of sugar and cinamon and roll the balls in the mixture. they are super fast and super easy and really yummy.

bump!

It's time to bump this! I'm on top of things this year. Already baked are: Pistacchio coffee cake, "Mary Lou's cookies", Buckeyes, Hershey's Kisses cookies.

To do today: Lemon Spritz (cookie gun), Sugar cookies (cut outs), and the first batch of fudge.

Tomorrow: A cheesecake for the work holiday party.

Gingerbread cookies!

I like frosting them with vanilla frosting - YUM!

Of course, you can't ever go wrong with sugar cookies.

I made both gingerbread and sugar ookies last week - but if you aren't a fabulous baker - Nestle (I think?) just came out with pre-cut cookies in gingerbread and sugar.

I might attempt to make something new this year... anyone have an easy, no-fail type of cookie?

(I do make fudge.. I use the recipes from the Fluff jar. :))

I am SOOO with you there! My grandma makes pumpkin bread that is to die for!!!!!!! Actually, anything she makes is to die for, lol, but my absolutely favorite thing she makes is chocolate cake - she just uses a cake mix and uses homemade buttermilk frosting! Absolutely fabulous!!!

Anyways- a little off subject- Fudge.
My Dad's ex fiancee makes chocolate fudge with velveeta cheese. It is so incredibly rich that you can barely have more than a few bites - but it is GREAT. Can't really tell that it's got cheese in it either.
