OTW, to be fair, this forwardness isn't just AI - I find the random posts on national and local sorority guestbooks that say "I need a rec, can you please give me one" and "I'm going to pledge XYZ when I get to college, how much are dues?" absolutely ghastly in their lack of restraint or discretion. Think about how you would feel if someone actually said this to you in real life, before you write it on a guestbook or message board!! |

tcsparky would know. Also, I'm willing to bet AlphaXiGirl or AZ-AlphaXi would know. I'll PM one of them. |

Honestly, I think a lot of people just have no *clue* about greek life. What she SHOULD have said is, "I have an interest in pledging Kappa," but she probably didn't realize it's a mutual selection process -- especially if you don't live near a big, competive, Southern school.

i think that some of us need to take a valium and lay down for a while! lots of people have no close friends or relatives who are greek, and they don't know where to turn so they somehow find greekchat and ask us. let's give them the benefit of the doubt.
that being said, spewing expletives is not the way to win friends and influence people or find a sponsor. |

BTW - bekibug -- you did exactly the right thing ... you gave her your contact information and HQs. As was said, the ball is in her court ... if she does contact you .. you can certainly invite her to meet some of your sisters or pass her information on the the local alumnae or your chapter advisor. |

I just wanted to let everyone know that I did find a potential (fingers crossed-she is so sweet) home for my Grad School Girl. She will be attending a COR event for AOII next Tuesday. However, when I talked to my NPC area advisor she told me this was not a possibility for Grad Students to join a collegiate chapter. My phone calls between all the women got crossed so I had already told the chapter about the girl and the girl about the event. I hope everything works out.:(

You know what? I kinda understand where you are coming from, and am happy that you went and took some initative to contact a GLO about AI (which is in the advice thread that you didnt bother to read) but being defense and rude about it will not help. A LOT OF PEOPLE (IE NATIONAL OFFICERS), read these boards and they also have ways of finding things out. This will not help you in your pursuit. Most of the questions that you had or will have can be answered in these threads. And most if not all of us are proactive when it comes to this pursuit, because we want this and have a passion for helping out and wanting to be a part of a special and wonderful sisterhood. Just be aware that potiental that a few of the ladies on this message board may become your sisters. You also have to understand that this process is NOT QUICK at all, its a hurry up and wait process and you will be a very lucky women indeed IF you get invited to membership into an Organization. If you ever feel like reading my story you will see that this is a humbling, joyous, stressful, exciting journey. I was almost a part of a sisterhood twice (once in college and one as an AI). Urania, is a wonderful group and I still wish I could be a part of it, I was so close that I could taste it, but it was not meant to be and I have excepted it and have moved on and now I have to start all over again. I'm in this for the long haul and I will find my home. I don't want to make a snap judgment, but from the above post you dont seem to be ready for the long process that this will take. Some of the stories here have been rather quick, but more than not they have been very long exhausting journeys that have been well worth the wait. I just hope that you have the patience to endure this and I really do hope that you find your home. ms. gwyn |

Something to think about: When you encounter a high school girl who notices your letters, and starts asking you questions, and then declares that she's going to pledge your organization, realize that she may be very impressed with YOU, and may not, as HotDamn said, have a clue about Greek life or how recruitment works at all. You may be one of her first encounters with someone in Greek life. Cool opportunity, an annoyance... it can be either, but it's up to you. [/hijack] |
Crystal, I'm not saying I would ever tell anyone that to their face - I would explain "well, you have to go through rush and etc etc." I'm certainly not going to say why yes you are going to pledge, they will love you, and we will be sisters. Because that isn't realistic.
However, people who have been using a computer since they popped out of the womb should be intelligent enough to know how to research something before opening their mouths or spouting off on the keyboard. |
Good point... Forgot that there are people who have been online so long. I never used email until my first semester in college...

This post will soon be moved to AI Sub Thread in one more day.
Just warning everyone that this is where it belongs. Alum Thread is for posting ideas to help with Alums and Chapters who wish to get assistance. |
