Do you know what led them to the dump?

According to USA Today it was a tip given to detectives. I don't know any more than that.

I still see reports here in Sacramento. They did a report on one of the woman's old college roomies that lives in the area.

Also heard the husband is still in psych ward and blood was found in the apartment and a knife was found outside the apartment building. (Or something like that.) People were tipped off that she was in a garbage can of some sort, which may lead to the landfill searches.

And to completely change the subject but going back to the amonia/bleach debate: anyone see that episode of CSI Vegas where a surgeon killed off another doctor and his mistress in the bathroom. The killer cleaned up the blood with something and the CSIs had trouble finding out who the victim actually was because the black lights didn't pick up any blood? Anyone know what episode I'm referring to? I swear the killer used bleach... but maybe it was amonia. (Then again, it's TV so ANYTHING could have happened and not be accurate.)

the scary thing is i lived in SLC for about a yr when i was younger and my best friend who i roomed with called me ( she still lives there) and said have you seen the front of the apt bldg ....so i turned on and waited for news coverage......We use to live is those apts

Well it seems to me that he knows where she is and that he killed her.

Agreed. But, if the family knows, then why doesn't the police?

Good question. Maybe they are stalling the inevitable.

SALT LAKE CITY - The husband of a pregnant woman who disappeared two weeks ago has been arrested on a charge of aggravated murder, police announced Monday.

Lori Hacking, 27, has been missing since July 19, when her husband told authorities that she failed to return from an early morning jog. Her body has not been found.


The investigation took a grim turn over the weekend when her relatives asked volunteers to stop looking for her in response to new information from Mark Hacking, and authorities said they would focus their search on a landfill.


"We believe that Mark Hacking is responsible for her disappearance and her death," Police Chief Rick Dinse said Monday.

I just saw on Salon.com that Mark Hacking just confessed to her murder. Said he stabbed her to death w/ a knife and then dumped her in a garbage bin.

This is so sad.

Lori Hacking's brother is on Larry King Live. He is so heartbroken. :(

Don't want to sound insensative again, but why should anyone who doesn't personally know these folks really care? If it were not in the media, you wouldn't care. So you care because it is?

There are many sadder and more violent situations that happen every single day. The media does a good job of bringing attention to the fact that these things tend to happen. But misses the boat on saying how unfortunately common these types of things are.

Why does it matter if some people care about this and it makes them feel sad.
What would you say if people decided to stop caring. What would you say if some one came said on here "oh another soldier was murder today. Well I didn't know him, so who cares?" you'd think that person was an insensitive jerk.
Yeah, so they express their sadness for something they hear about. Why is that a problem. Would you prefer a million threads everyday about the starving children in Ethiopia, or all the people who are dying of AIDS? So that we can express our sadness for all the sad things that are happening in the world.

A member of GC could come on here tomorrow and say that one of their parents died (and it's happened), you might not now the person, but wouldn't you sympathize with their loss.

I just fail to understand why this is a problem for that people are expressing their sadness for one event and not another?

It's not that I don't regret the loss of the individual. I just think that the media acting in its own best interest sensationalizes these things rather than drawing attention to the larger problem.

Take your example of a young person dying in Iraq. Okay, let's expand and look at what they were doing, why they were there, etc. Let's not just read that 6 more soldiers died today.

My beef is with how the news is presented -- like Laci or whoever this was are the only ones that this sort of thing happens to.

The thing with the media is they only print what sells. They're only going to wite about if it has some interesting twist, like the husband running around a hotel room naked, or lying about getting into medical school.

If it doesn't have some kind of twist/weird event, then it's not interesting and it's just another case of spousal abuse gone too far, and might only get a little blurb in the back of the paper. It's about what sells.
