I don't know.... some parts of southern Illinois feel suspiciously like the Deep South. ;)

I'm proud to be a Yankee (Ohio). I believe DZ was founded here as well as several very large old fraternities. There are quite a few competitive greek systems here too (Ohio St., Ohio U, Miami, Bowling Green) . So there!! :p

Yeah, some of the largest GLOs with a HUGE Southern Representation were founded up North
AOII, Gamma Phi Beta, and Alpha Gamma Delta were founded in New York...

i'm in the North (ok, midwest ifyou will), it is pretty easy to notice that everywhere is different.

I always love the Through up of the Mason Dixon Line to denote the North from the South.

These were two surveyors who were commissioned by I think Jefferson, to denote a line running East And West to the then known area of the USA Western Boundrys.

When the Civil War Broke out, this supposedly became the dividing line of the N & S.

Many of the States such as Maryland I beleive were above that line and were with Southern Sympathys. Mo. was considered Southern as it was a slave state, and Kansas when it was admitted was a Freeman State, Northern as it had its choice with another State that was coming into being, Nebraska (?).

Actually, the Civil War started between the battles in Mo. and Ks. Not back East.

The last raging battle was in Westport area of KC Mo, known as the Gettysburg of the West.

The last throws of the Confederacy were fought at Pea Ridge, In Arkansas.

The vestiges of that Southern Army then fled to Texas.

So, get the History Straight about North and South.

But Being a throw Back, I still Love to have my Ladies say Fantastic instead of Bull Shit!:D

Oh, LXA was Founded in Boston, AKL was Founded In California, One was started in Norwich ( SP ) Conn. One (? ) in Iowa, Union Triad considered the Oldies In NY, Miami Triad in Ohio. XO, in Arkansas.

So, I guess I am saying that there is no one area that is the hot bed of starting Greek Organizations.

No North or South, just beginnings.

hmm.. those of us in Jersey definitely call ourselves Northerners. Quite proudly :D

However, we dont consider Illinois, Indiana, Wiscosin, Michigan, etc, "northern"-- they are Mid-west. They are definitely culturally different than we are.

It's not that hard.

I think D*Phi*E for the most part is a "predominantly Northern" sorority at this time, and we are expanding a lot into the south (some recent chapters have opened in Texas I believe). I know we are really strong in Florida but most New Yorkers I know consider Florida an extension of the north anyways (or at least an extension of NY as many people who relocate there are from NY). Where am I going with this?

Culturally different...hmmm -- how so?

Based on the people I know who are from the midwest, they have a very different mentality towards life. They're much slower (not in terms of intelligence, I just mean SLOWER. People from NY and NJ are always in a rush.) We are also very diverse, and I get the impression that the midwest is pretty white bread. Minus the cities, of course. NJ is a mini US- we have every culture, religion, sexual orientation, etc, known to man in a very small space. It seems that the midwest is mostly White Christians. My friend from Illinois, who lived in a suburb of Chicago (which she said was more diverse than most of the midwest) was in culture shock when she moved to Jersey. She said everything was different.

Plus, we are very overcrowded, have short tempers, and we KNOW our Italian food. fuhgettaboutit!

Tri Delta was founded in Boston.

Kappa, Pi Phi, and Theta were all founded in states that would be considered distinctly "not Southern."

Plus, for all the strength of the SEC Greek systems, it's the Big 10 that boasts the biggest NPC sorority systems in terms of chapters and numbers, correct?

Holy stereotypes, Batman.

Chicago certainly is very diverse, but it's not the only Midwestern city that is. (St. Louis and Milwaukee come to mind right off the bat -- I'm sure there are others.) Also, you have to look outside of the black/white issue of race -- most of the Midwest, from my experience, has a pretty decent percentage of Asians/Asian-Americans and Hispanics as well as American Indians . . . even smaller Wisconsin towns like Wausau have a large Hmong population, for example. I think the pace of life is pretty much an issue of city versus suburban/rural -- Chicago is much faster paced than, say, Madison Wisconsin. Plus everyone is going to be slow compared to NYC . . . ;)

I have East coast relatives, and from what I can tell from visiting them and talking to them, where I grew up is almost indistinguishable from most of NY state, Pennsylvania and New England.
