No, they're going to say "Sheesh, who ever did that is worthless and ought to have the book thrown at them." Simply put, most people with any brains are going to view the vandalism as saying a whole lot more about the vandals than about Tri-Sigmas.
Clearly you haven't spent any time on the unpopular side of the social spectrum.

I've seen many many people take stereotypes and run, and some people will think, wow those people who did this to them are really awful, but you can bet your bottom dollar some people will think, "gee they must be as bad as everyone says they are." Or "When I rush there's no way in hell I'm going to be a ___."

How do I know? Well! I'm glad you asked. People have teased my chapter for being large (ahem! at 5'6" and 130 lbs, I am NOT large!), and I heard alomst everyday, "you're a Chi O? You're not fat!" With astonishment. When you get that kind of treatment, people don't take the time to find out who you are and say, hey the XYZ's are really nice people, despite not having an entire chapter of barbie dolls. People run with what they hear, and if they see one nanogram of evidece for a sterotype, you are stuck with it (and the worst ones are generally in the greek system!). Stuff like this, which is above and beyond anything I have ever seen, is very harsh on any group, in addition to not supporting the ideals of our orgs.

I don't want to make this bad event worse, but this is why is sucks so much.

Tom Earp 04-26-2004 04:41 PM

This is one of the saddest state of affairs that I have heard of in many years!:(

I have checked the Campus web site and it sucks for Greeks!:(

There do not seem to be that many Greeks there at CCU, but if you would PM me I would be more than happy to check out the Greeks.

If it is done by a fellow Greek Organization, it is in very bad taste, PERIOD!

If it is done by Independents, then it is Stupidity and Illegal for Property Damage!

Try to instill in your Sister Hood that you are much better than that! Stear them to GC and let them see what Most of us try to do for Greek Betterment!

Hold your Heads High, Wear Your Letters and become bigger than the slugs who did this!

Hurtful, yes it is, get sympathy, it will become a selling tool for the Sisters Of Tri-Sigma. Just show them you are bigger than they, (Whoever it was), are! You will gain more respect!

this is a huge deal, especially for a chapter that may not be on the top of the social ladder at the school. if it happens to the "top" chapter, people will just laugh. if it happens to anyone else...that's a different story.

keep your head up hon. and get to panhellenic faster than fast. if any of your sisters have friends in other chapters, ask them to talk to their chapters about doing something to show greek unity. that'll get the message across.

James- I am not picking on you, but try looking at this from another perspective....

What if this had happened to your sister or daughter?? How angry would you feel then? And remember that we female types can be a bit more tender and emotional than you guys :)

I totally agree.

CCUSigma, I'm so sorry this happened to you and your sisters. There's some great advice in this thread -- I hope that it's helpful to you.

CCUSigma - I would love to know what's been going on and how you ladies have been dealing with everything. KEEP YOUR HEADS HIGH! :D

That's so true. How badly this affects a chapter has everything to do with "who" they are. Personally, I think this incident just shows immaturity on the part of whoever did it, but others might view the chapter in an unflattering light after this, which is what makes it so bad. People talk about how cruel kids can be...well, big kids can be cruel, too.

Please keep us updated as to the situation!

Look at it another way:

Look at it another way: If your chapter wasn't pretty good and admired, they wouldn't pick on you.

I don't think anybody is going to see grafitti on a building, and think "that is so true."

Everybody hates the Yankees, 'cause they're strong. If somebody is thinking about you, and putting up banners and grafitti, they must fear you.

Or, this may have all been done by one of your members, trying to get the girls united and strong?

kellybelly31 04-27-2004 11:18 AM

CCUSigma123---

Hey this is kind of off topic. (I'm sorry to here about what happened) But I was wondering if you by any chance know anything about the Tri-Sigs of St Marys Univ. in San Antonio. I'm going there in the fall and I'm thinking about rushing, but I dont think they have a website. Just wondering if you know how I could contact any of them....:D

RedFox 04-27-2004 01:42 PM

That is indeed tragic...and so disrespectful...but I may have an idea that shows that not only do you not care, but you can put it towards good spirits that all it was, was a joke, and use it to make you stronger! Definitely would suggest wearing your letters in every way possible and be PROUD! My next suggestion (and again its only a suggestion) Have an end of the year bar-b-que. to commemorate the celebration of classes. You'd make some money on the side for rush or whatever next year and say hey we're still strong and can move on and you know what about the pigs....we're cooking, so EAT IT...good theme to be like hey we know we're awesome, and we're not being brought down because of this cruel act of jealousy! good luck and best wishes in the investigation, keep us posted!!

Love and Roses

No question, Michelle, that hurtful stereotypes can run rampant, but in my experience (for what it is worth), those stereotypes are perpetuated and turned into "fact" by rumors and snide comments ("Well, you know everyone thinks that the ABCs are losers..."), not by banners and vandalism. Again, in my experience, anyone who looks at "Tri-Pigs" spray-painted on the wall of a college building and thinks, "gee they must be as bad as everyone says they are" has already bought into the stereotype unquestioningly.

And as far as rush goes, is any GLO really looking for candidates who are so dim-witted that they would look at the junior high antics of these losers and take it for truth? Better off without them.

I stand by what I said earlier -- CCUSigma123 and her sisters have every right to be offended and hurt, and they are certainly owed an apology. But they should not respond as though they have to defend themselves or prove the vandals wrong (or even prove the vandals stupid -- those losers are doing that quite well enough on their own.) They should hold their heads high, confident and proud, and demonstrate that they -- unlike the losers trying to defame them -- are a class act.

HollisterDXiChi 04-27-2004 03:34 PM

Wow, I thought I had it bad...

Im really sorry this happened to you ladies. Everyone has offered great help and I pretty much just second that. Keep your heads up, wear your colors and letters with pride. Good luck taking care of the situation!
