I have gotten really dissappointed in the Real World in the last few years. It's good to see some diversity in this cast, but in some ways, it's just as homogeneous as past years...is there anyone in the house over a size 4 that doesn't look like a model??? It seems more like this show is cast more like a Noxzema commercial than a show based on real life 3 dimensional people.

You have a point there. I was just talking about this. In terms of weight and body size, everybody is pretty small, with the exception of Kameelah from Boston and Sharon from London. There is very little variety in terms of body size. So much for the Real World being realistic. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif

I was thinking the same thing. But then I gave them the benefit of the doubt and figured that maybe the more non-model type people aren't cut out for the show?? Perhaps the REAL women (i.e. the average weight, the average look type women) aren't trying out for the show?? If they are, maybe they're boring?? Or maybe they don't have anything to offer? I think w/ Kameelah and Sharon, both of them really represented well. I felt they were both interesting people and I enjoyed watching them on the show. Perhaps others that look more like them are hard to find?? <shrug> I don't know...just looking at it from another point of view.

On another note, it seems like when they air the tapes of people that didn't make the first cuts or whatever, you always see the more REAL looking people. But to me, those are usually the people that make a complete FOOL of themselves on their tape and don't deserve to get picked! Honestly, yes, they could have some more full-figured people on there. But as far as looks go, man, most of those chicks where TONS of makeup! If not TONS, they still wore some most of the time b/c they were on camera. Um, check out these girls on this new season! Rachel is the only one that isn't wearing a store full of makeup. But Lori, Coral, and esp Nicole...WHOA!! I think most of the rW women were/are pretty, but not super gorgeous. Even that Jacinda girl (RW-London) who WAS a model, wasn't all that! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/tongue.gif

Anyway, I think this season is gonna be good. I'm just thrilled to see all the peeps of color! Woo-hoo! It's about dang time! I think this is the first time I actually like everyone on the show. The only one I'm sorta if-fy about is Coral. Sometimes I'm feeling her and others times she sorta scares me. She seems like she'll just jump down your throat about anything! I don't know, but she puts ME on edge and I'm not even in the house! But I can't wait to see what this season brings! Hey, we should have RW chat after each episode and discuss our thoughts. Anyone down?

BrandNubian,

I appreciate your comments, and it does make me think.

I too, appreciate diversity. You are right, not everyone can be like Kevin or Mohammed. I guess Segun bothered me because he had a little "Beyonce" in him. You know the type, "look at me, look how pretty I am, I am so great"...kind of attitude. But at least Beyonce can sing. Maybe I missed Segun's talent.
Malik on the other hand, is a budding musician. For show and tell he brought a copy of his new CD. So he does have some talent, although we have not heard him play or sing, yet.
Angel and the other guys, yeah they were shallow and small-minded, but they weren't black..so I don't really care how they come across to the general population. Tv has a habit of perpetuating stereotypes and it is nice when you see people that show us in a positive light. For example, Nicole is from "the hood" as she puts it, but she demonstrated that just because you are from the hood, doesnt mean you don't know how to act.
I agree with you, David from N'awlins made me mad as H*@l a lot of times. Especially on his quest to bed all of N'awlins and by trying to prove that he was "the man" and other antics. I thought that David was downright RUDE and self-centered, but as I said before...artsy people are on a different level. That is not excusing him, but I understand it a little better. In the end, David learned that it is not all about him.

Maybe I am a little to hard on Segun...when the special comes on again, I will watch it to see what I missed.

lastpoetnsite 07-04-2001 12:35 AM

much respect...*this is gonna be long*

it seems that there have been quite a few contradictory issues about whether Segun should or should not have been selected for the Real World Ten. what i have read is that initially...people looked at him as feminine because of some lotion gloves. Which seemed to make individuals feel uneasy about him "representing". Then oh no it wasn't just that...i mean the brotha cried...and then he was actually real about a taboo subject in the black community---homosexuality.

And its because of the combination of his: obsession with beauty (i.e. lotion gloves), his crying, and his honesty about homosexuality that he is not a good representative on the real world.

Well folx, first of all if white people were going to stereotype black men they already had 7 individuals by which to make that assumption. And Segun has already made his presence known on television...so...if he was gonna be a "stereotype" then he could reasonably already be one.

also lets look at the 7 individuals:
-kevin (new york): when the filming of the first show took place he was arguably the stereotypical black man. while he was educated he had a short fuse and was accused of violence against a poor defenseless white girl (julie) (see episode 111). so he was already what supposedly white america believed about black men. angry, violent, bitter.
-david (los angeles): accused in episode 207 (by a white girl) of trying to rape tami (a black woman) and also prior to this we see david in episode 204 attempting to strangle jon (the pure white christian man) because he is angry. he gets kicked off. again america is shown black men are: angry, violent, bitter.
-mohammed (san francisco): he was the first black man who actually was just chillin. notice that he was also not completely seen until he was in episode 316 breaking up with his long time girlfriend, Stephanie and then going off with another girl...and then crying and getting back with her...or at least trying to patch up the damage. he was just too "normal" so of course there is very little seen about him.
-syrus (boston): this is the first sign of the black man in his other stereotype...the black man as player, pimp, hustler...who always wants to get in bed with a white woman. syrus screwed several white women during the show. and most of his drama was revolving around women.
-stephen (seattle): a return to the bitter, angry, violent black man...whose home life was so dysfuctional that he doesn’t know his ass from a hole in the ground. what is he known for? for smacking a white girl for...*gasp* questioning his sexuality! *methinks doth protest too much* if anyone had gay vibes it was him!
-tech (hawaii) he was a mans man right? interesting...he is a return to the black man as pimp, player, hustler. he slept with so many women on the island that he and ruthie shared a conquest! (episode 817).
-david(new orleans): this is mtv’s favorite representation black man as: player, pimp, hustler. he embodied not only stereotypical black man but men in general. he reveals that after getting dumped by a female he pumped up and vowed not to love again. so he becomes emotionally unavailable. *he’s a mans man right?* in addition, he fine tuned the art of dating every woman outside of your race imaginable except in one episode where they showed him sexin a black woman. (which if you want to say theres some stereotyping you could say that the black woman who sleeps with david after a couple of hours of knowing him is similar to the one that white america had of black women. (peep: urbanentertainment.com for the documentary on the sexualization of black women).

so ladies lets just be honest. the reason why Segun would not be a good "representative" is because of what those of you with latent gay-dars call his homosexual tendencies. although it does make me laugh that these so-called tendencies are in some ways less than bad and more good. he was emotional, he cared about his appearance, and he was honest and confortable in his sexuality. dag if he is gay then what does that say about str8 men? oh and by the way...everyone’s guy, angel, if you watch the show closely he does his share of crying too. and being rude to jisela. he was quite frankly and asshole.

i think that we need to start getting real and lets face our internalized homophobia.
btw...most of the people on the show do not have talent! unless being whiney bellyaching generation x'ers is a talent. i have seen few people on there actually go on to be successful with their talent. the only one that really comes to mind is Kevin. he is an accomplished writer and journalist....and probably would be without the real world.

peace

ZChi, I was just thinking the same thing about Coral when I was watching the show. Now I know that Mike shouldn't have made that ignorant comment (I tell ya...him and Jenifer Lopez must be distant cousins b/c folks are getting way tooooo comfortable...But Coral did not have to act like he didn't exist...Don't get it twisted http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif I wouldv'e been mad too, but you can tell when a person is really racist b/c of hatred vs. they are racist b/c they don't know any better and they are making a consciuos effort to break out of that shell...And then when I re-watched the Casting Special I felt like she should have accepted that guy's apology after he pulled her in the pool (he didn't know...)...Anyway, did ya check out the clips at the end regarding the rest of the season...Coral and Nicole (she's cool but I agree she wears WAY toooo much makeup) GO AT IT!! I'm looking forward to this...

P.S. Can't y'all tell I'm out of school and I have no life http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif Whateva!!

SweetestDiva 07-04-2001 11:12 AM

Okay, here goes what I thought about Episode 1:

LORI: Okay, the boy is not that cute. She needs to calm it down just a taste. I know their confessionals and the clips are grossly edited to make the storyline develop the way they want it to, but they're making her look like some kinda psycho.

MALIK: I like the way he's just cool about things... just chillin. I still say he's fine.

CORAL: Whoa, killer! This girl is out of control. It doesn't take much to push her over the edge, but the thing that bothers me is that she seems to pride herself on being unforgiving and intolerant.

NICOLE: Same as Malik.. just chillin.

MIKE: Po' thang. He doesn't know any better. But something tells me he will learn.

RACHEL: No opinion. Kinda boring.

KEVIN: Needs to be real with Lori. Otherwise, same as Rachel.

I can't wait to see the fight between Nicole and Coral.. I guess I'm just messy like that, but they did not look to be playing.

SeriousAKA 07-04-2001 01:21 PM

Hello everyone!!! I watched Real World last night and I am so EXCITED. I didn't watch the casting special but now I wish I had.

All I can say right now is that Coral is just like me!!! I would have handled the situation with the dude the same way. would have waited for him to come to me to either apologize or at least say something.

I can't wait until next week!

MaMaBuddha 07-04-2001 01:41 PM

i want malik to do something with his hair!!!

coral...what the hell is her problem??

ZChi4Life 07-04-2001 04:19 PM

Yes, I think the producers definitely wanted to see more peeps hook up this season. I mean, look at all the questions during the casting special. I'm assuming they edited a lot of the questions out to only show the ones about who wants to hook up w/ who, etc.

I think they are making Lori look like a psycho too. They did the same thing to Amaya on Hawaii. That's ALL they ever showed them talking about when they did those "confessionals" or whatever you call'em. Lori doesn't really seem like she'd be like that. Maybe to an extent, but dang! Everytime she talked, Kevin's name came outta her mouth! I don't know about that. I feel like Kevin is sorta saying one thing and doing another. Just like Lori said, he'll tell her he wants to wait and then be hugging her and stuff. She was all over him too, but she's not the one saying she wants to wait. I don't know...that's all just a mess.

I wonder what's gonna happen w/ Malik and Nicole. He's cute but the hair has got to be tamed!! I wish he'd stop picking it. I know you're probably supposed to, but it's getting on my nerves! And I'm not feeling all his facial hair that much either. He needs to braid the hair and trim up the beard, sideburns...alla that!
THEN, we can talk http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Coral, Coral, Coral. She just needs to bring it back a few notches. I think she's gonna be that person that overreacts to everything! I just know that when she told ol' boy off, I was thinking, "Why didn't she just ask him where he derived at all of that stuff" and "Why not ask him if he believed any of the stuff that his uncle told him." I KNOW I would've said something to him, but I would've tried to find out where he got all that and if he thought it was true. I felt bad cuz he kept trying to tell her that he didn't mean it like that. Po' boy. Then she had to go and not talk to him. She just blew that outta proportion. Instead of telling him to stop talking or whatever, why not see where he's coming from and EDUCATE him!!

Ok, I'm done cuz I could go on and on.

Girl, I know! Who do you think is gonna win that fight?

Oh, Malik is toooo d*** fine!!!

maxx5 07-05-2001 12:29 AM

Is it just me...or did anyone else notice that the producers seem to really want sex to happen between the cast members? After seeing the casting special and listening to Nicole and Malik state their interest for each other, Lori and Kevin...and the kiss between Jisela and Sophia(who are going to be on Road Rules)...it seems as if the producers really try to encourage something sexual between the cast members.
What a cheap way to boost ratings...they need to be a little more creative. Don't you think? Maybe it's just me???!!!

exquizit 07-05-2001 12:44 AM

I agree that the fight will be one of the main things that will make me tune into theis season. You know eventually there was gonna be a fight between Coral and everyone in the house but she found someone to pick on that wouldn't back down! lol....I can't wait to see it....(I guess I'm messy like that too) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/tongue.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Would you want them to put a black gang-banger or drug-dealer on the show??? I did not want Segun on the show not b/c he may be gay but b/c I did not like his attitude and seemed arogant, shallow (like when he was talking about how he values "Hoes"...WHATEVA!!), and immature. I value diversity just as much as the next person, but we have to draw the line somewhere. Don't get it twisted (cuz I don't) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif, I know there are MANY shallow, immature (like David acted sometimes on RW New Orleans...he got on my nerves sometimes), and ignorant black men in America, but I'd rather not see stereotypes perpetuated on tv.

YOu have to admit that at least David from New Orleans was good for a laugh! When he was trying to scat and started singing that "Come on be my baby" song I was on the FLOOR

I disagree.

It did no tlook like he was talking to her, he was sitting down and staring at her waiting for her to acknowledge him which wasn't gonna happen. It was for him to approach her.

And you have to give her a lot of credit. Yo udid not see her yelling or screaming. She didn't hit anybody. She said she did not want to discuss it, and went on her way. When he apologised, she accepted his apology.

What more should she have done? I can't see that I would have handled it that differently.
