More of the story
Here's what I know about the story. This is what a Greek Life informal investigation apparently turned up.
The Friday before the article was published, several Zeta Phi Betas (in letters) were seen trashing several sorority banners in Greek Town. These Zeta Phi Betas were NOT from Mizzou. They had apparently driven up for, and attended, a Zeta Phi Beta party in Columbia that night. They were supposedly on their way home and passed through Greek Town. They did not drive up just to cause problems. Diversity is a huge issue on this campus. it's the "buzz word" here if you will. This was "the straw that broke the camel's back" in the argument according to someone that was at the rally this morning, as quoted in today's Columbia Missourian. For several recent articles from the other side of the Diversity debate, go to themaneater.com archives and look for columns from Zaria Quidafi |

Anyway, I too find the pumpkin amazing. I mean, really, who throws a PUMPKIN? I've thrown many things at people, but a PUMPKIN? FAB will confirm I IMed her to discuss this situation further as I too was incredulous over the pumpkin. Also, I've grown up in Middle America and never heard that saying. Maybe it's because I have class. Maybe. |
Again, please stop talking to me and insulting me. I don't want to argue with you.

Updates from the "Maneater" Student Paper
The "Maneater" has two articles -- one about the demonstration or sit-in led by the NPHC, one about the supporting demonstration by IFC and NPC. Quotes from relevant students and Mizzou administrators are included.
Apparently an apology has been made or will soon be released by the writer of the article in the "Student News" paper. The articles are at http://www.themaneater.com/story.cgi?id=18501 and http://www.themaneater.com/story.cgi?id=18502 It looks as though Mizzou's NPC definitely disassociated itself from the point of view suggested by the "Student News" story. And yes, the "Maneater" articles identify the "Student News" writer and editor, and the NPC sorority to which they both belong. |
Hmmmmm... Wished that they'd have thought through that article BEFORE posting it... And, wish they had not mentioned their letters/affiliation...

I am a little disturbed by this article..and I have a few questions...
The first and foremost thing that I notice here is that this author, and apparently some of you guys also, has such blantant ignorance and disrepect for the NPHC sororities. For those of you who don't know what they are...they are: Alpha Kappa Alpha, 1908 Delta Sigma Theta, 1913 Zeta Phi Beta, 1920 Sigma Gamma Rho, 1922 Let me say that while three of the four were founded on an HBCU campus (MY campus to be exact), and all four are predominantly African American, they are not exclusively "black" sororities. The author says several times to let the alleged members "stay in their little world ad leave ours alone" or things encourageing the seperation of the "Greek Town" from the NPHC organizations (of which there are a total of nine). I ask: 1. I am sure that at least one of these orgs exsists on her campus, but why are they not included in this "greek Town"? 2. Are you sure these are members of the said sorority? I remember quite a few times reading in MY school paper where other fraternities dressed up in the letters o fNPHC fraternity letters in black face and such...it could be a horrible prank, done by people wearing letters that weren't theirs, or even as an act of "payback"...I am quite sure even the freshest neo of one of these orgs wouldn't be malicious enough (or stupid enough) to destroy the property of another organization. 3. So she has never heard of these organizations...so what? I never heard of 95% of the orgs on here until I joined...I was under the impression when you saw letters you didn't recognize, that you asked what they were about, or did your own research. I am offended by her lack of respect and I am not a member of any of these orgs. To belittle them by calling the NPHC world "liitle", and implying insignificant...tells me she doesnt truly understand what it means to be Greek. 4. Why shouldn't the non-NPHC orgs work with NPHC orgs? If you truly feel that issues like this are important and want to stop them from happening again...some workshops, prgrams, joint service projects SOMETHING needs to happen! Just sitting back and setteling for some old jim Crow-ish seperation is backwards...and I say Jim Crow, because based on this article, it sounds like shefeels this is a Black Greek vs White Greek thing 5. I truly suggest that whoever doesn't know about the history of any of the NPHC orgs, go and look up their info and learn...I have spent the past two months learning about several otehr organizations that I may never have even given a second thought to...and I must say that many of them sound very interesting..and I would never have known about them had I not done my research. Ignorance isn't bliss...it's the crap that lowers the national average of intelligence.... |

This is also a good way to make friends, build relationships, and understand each other. After all, college should be about learning to live with others and understanding how we are like other people and how we are different. This is what prepares us for that nebulous world called 'real life'. |
The apology makes them look weak.

Holy hell...a girl chucks a pumpkin, and as it's been said, not a mini but a full-sized job at a girl's head, and it hits her? That's insane, I'm sorry!!
