I don't know the original founding date of AXiD at UK. Here's the story, though: Supposedly there was a race to get the proper forms turned in to get recognition from the university, between AXiD and (I think) AGD. AXiD got recognized 5 minutes before AGD because some of the AXiDs tripped the AGDs on the stairs (whoops! :D) and so the AXiDs got to the office first and got their paperwork in first. It's been told to me by girls from other chapters, too, including (I think) an AGD, so I'm pretty sure it's probably the truth.
UKDaisy, what you said about AGD calling themselves the "oldest house on campus"...well, I guess they could call themselves that now since AXiD is gone... :( GtownGirl98, I think what you're talking about with the construction is that which TSteven mentioned, on PA Ave. behind the DG house. That is behind the sorority houses and across from the new library. All of the sororities do have houses on campus. The DG and Pi Phi houses look to be the newest, but I'm not sure how old they are. They are at least 2 years old though, because they were around when I first came to campus. The new houses the were built over the 2001/2002 school year are for Sigma Chi and Sig Ep, and they opened in fall 2002. I heard that UK built those fraternities houses because they tore their old ones down, but I'm not sure if that's true. I don't think they were located in the six pack before, though. There are 5 houses in the 6pack currently, and none of those were the Sigma Chi or Sig Ep houses, since they all house other fraternities. TSteven, do you know what happened to the 6th house in the 6pack? I heard something about one of the houses exploding the pipes in their basement and the house having to be condemned, but I don't know if that was true. Also, do you / did you go to UK? You do seem to know a lot about the area, but your user location doesn't say Kentucky... |
I did my undergrad work at UK a while ago. Now I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area. I usually get back to Lexington at least once a year. This year I was back for two UK football games. UofL  and Murray State :)
GO CATS! :D Regarding the Six Pack, they are coming down at some point just don't know the dates. And it was the KA house that was torn down. Why, I don't know. But exploding pipes in their basement wouldn't surprise me. ;) The Sigma Chi house was on Woodland Avenue across the street from Kappa Sigma right at the corner of Hilltop. Next to the Alpha Gamma Rho house which I think it's still there. Next to the AGR house was the Phi Kappa Tau. Sigma Chi's house got "condemned" for wiring or some sort of fire hazard. The Sig Ep and ATO houses were in the area where the new library went up so they too needed new houses. Thus ATO, Sig Ep and the Sigs all got new houses. I'm guessing that KA is next in line but not sure about that. Overall, my understanding is that the idea is to build fraternity houses - similar to Sigma Chi's and Sigma Phi Epsilon's - behind the new basketball practice facility which will be built behind Memorial Coliseum. Part of "University Town" or whatever they are going to call it. On the North Side of campus and kind of between the Kappa, AOPi and Phi Tau houses. Sort of a triangle that goes from campus toward downtown. Not sure if it has more to do with needed space or what, but I've heard that some of the sororities are lobbing for new digs as well. Regardless, my understanding is that the Six-Pack gets first crack. NOTE: For those of y'all who don't have a clue what we are talking about, there were six UK owned fraternities houses on campus and near the twin towers dorm complex. They were right next to each other in two rows with three houses in each row. Just like a six pack and thus the name. Currently there are only five houses. The middle house on the "right" side - the KA house - was torn down and is now parking for the other houses. The other five from "top to bottom" are Lambda Chi Alpha, Phi Sigma Kappa, Pi Kappa Alpha on the "left" side, with FarmHouse, the parking lot (old KA house), and Kappa Sigma on the "right" side. By the way, I haven't heard about the three non housed fraternities and if they are slated to go into any of the new houses. Rose and High? I'm a Two Keys man myself. |

The story on the KA house is true...over winter break, I believe, a few years ago the heat was turned off and the pipes burst, causing the house to be condemned. All the houses in the Six Pack are sh**holes anyway, with the possible exception of FarmHouse. :p I guess they do need to be torn down since it would cost so much to renovate them, but it's kinda sad because a couple of them (maybe the KA house) used to house the "Kitten Lodge," which, according to my stepdad, was where the freshmen ballplayers lived...I'll have to ask him again about that.
Yeah...you all are right on about everything else--it's too much to comment on, so I'll just say that! :p *Edited to Add* I did a little digging, and the Xi chapter of Alpha Xi Delta was established at UK in 1907, while AGD's chapter there was founded on May 14, 1908. So the five-minute thing's a little off... ;) |
It was sad...
My freshman year of high school, my dad and I went to a UK BB game and he commented on how one day I would stand inline for UK tickets like he did... :( I haven't had the chance yet... senior year Georgetown made a better offer for me to go there. I don't regret going to GC but I lost the family connection to UK... that is why I'm going to apply for graduate school there.... do grad students get a chance at those tickets (you know in the student section or at least close by)?
To hear him talk about his greek days at UK is interesting. He is/was a Phi Kappa Sigma. So he talked about the six pack often. I concur that they are s**tholes but the history behind those walls... I would hope that if they are torn down that the campus would just put newer versions back in their place. Well if the story about them being tripped is true, then that wasn't very panhellenic of them. According to the UK website charter years are 1908 for both groups. And whether or not AGD was first, apparently they are the oldest now. Thanks all those who are participating in this topic... I've enjoyed the education and shared knowledge. |

This has been a major history lesson for me. I can not believe they wouldn't rebuild the "6-pack"....and I mean that's a UK thing. That is really sad.... |

Tigerlily, I am sad whenever any GLO closes for whatever reason. It shows how vulnerable a group can be, especally when age isn't a factor.

Is that the plan? A "green space"? I have heard the following scenarios for the Six-Pack. None of which came from anyone "official". Basically all speculation. 1. Tear them all down and build one or two new fraternity houses there. Bigger houses and not like the box types of the current Six-Pack. The GLOs not housed there will go to the new "College-Town" area. 2. Two or three GLOs would leave and two of the current houses would expand and "absorb" the house across the yard. For example, LXA would stay and expand into the FH house. Same with the Pikes and Kappa Sig. Or visa versa. I would guess that Phi Sigma Kappa - as the middle house - would either be torn down or could build out as well. 3. No fraternity houses there but other campus buildings. 4. Parking. |
USC
USC had Sigma Sigma Sigma, Kappa Alpha Theta, and Delta Gamma within the past 5 or 6 years (I'm not sure when tri-sig closed) and they are getting Gamma Phi Beta in the fall of 2004. Just some updates to clarify a little.

I don't know why, but this legend strikes me as hilarious as it is undoubtedly untrue. Like, can you even imagine all these young women sprinting up the stairs in their full-length skirts and button hole boots, trying to keep their hats on straight, and then sticking out a foot to trip one another??!? Please. |
