There are some older sorors who get VERY offended about the use of the frog. I went to a workshop at Regionals, and the presenter said that if we had any at home, throw them away because they do not represent Alpha Kappa Alpha. I collect frogs (cute ones), but I don't buy or accept a frog with AKA on it.

Here in TX most of the sorors that were "made" in 95 w/ me used bunnies. I personally fell in love with frogs and have an entire collection

Ran across this thread and thought it was worth bringing back to the top. Was having this discussion with a LS some months back - we pledged grad chapter nearly 13 years ago - and much of what I've heard recently about mascots I see repeated here. Are there any new/different mascots discusssed now? I found this thread to be quite interesting.

Our chapter never used the unofficial mascots on anything.
We did collect bunnies, though. It was just something cute to do. I only have one frog (very recent). I don't have any mice. Considering what they mean, I don't have any objection to collecting them. It's just necessary to remember that they are NOT official.

This is a very interesting topic. I was initiated into a grad chapter (Alpha Delta Omega) here in Nashville and we didn't use any mascots. However, as the sponsor chapter for the undergraduate chapter at TSU, I have become acquainted with the frog as a mascot. I am originally from South Carolina and when I was younger I remember my sister, who pledged ten years ago, referencing the mouse as their mascot (she pledged at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina). I have only recently heard of the bunny and i have never heard of the pink panther. That is totally new to me. I have found myself collecting frogs, though. I don't know if the mascots are regional or not, I guess it just depends on what the chapter wants to use, even though it is unofficial.

I wanted to bring this to the top and get different perspectives on it because I pledged grad chapter 13 years ago and we didn't have mascots, any of that. So when my sister-in-law was telling me that a young lady that she has been speaking with has her room decorated with frogs, I was a little concerned (okay, I got indignant!) - even asked my LS if they had heard anything about the frog being the mascot! Seems like years ago I remember seeing something from Nationals about the frog not being the mascot, so this frog business was a little sacriligious (sp?), if you get my drift. I'm still a little old school with not wanting to collect frogs, bunnies, etc. But with the different postings, now I see where everyone is coming from. Thanks for the imput Sorors Sahara and PearlEssence08! :)

Yes...it does change from region to region (the mascot that people 'claim').....However, we should only be using the official items.

I must admit...we had heard about everything thing down at Dillard when I was there....and I was just as guilty of having a few; however, the older I get I see and understand more and more of why we should follow our national mandates.

I came in in 1990 and was out of the "loop" for so long that when I started seeing all of this frog stuff, etc., all I could do was scratch my head. :confused: I felt funny asking about it so I waited and asked a Soror who is a double-legacy. She asked both her mother and her grandmother and they too answered...:confused: ? It has taken a while to get used to the idea, but I think I'm liking the frog thing. It can tie-in in that little frogs reside in the damp shade of thick, healthy ivy. I don't know about the rabbit and mouse, though.
