I have yet to have mine removed. My dentists give me that constant reminder by showing the X-Rays. However, I have a question or two about it? The anesthestic/numbing medicine of choice, is that up to the patient or the dental surgeon to choose the type of sensory depriving medicine? Just wanted to be prepared and informed when I have mine out.

Heh..I dont' remember much about getting my wisdom's out...that's mostly due to my daddio. He had me pumped up on pain pills and chocolate pudding. Every few hours when I would actually gain back conciousness he'd give me my oills and make me eat more damn pudding.

Oh..make sure your dentist doesn't have large hands. I will say nothing more about that. ;)

My baby sis just got hers out last week. Take this opportunity to indulge in all the things you should have grown out of years ago-snack packs, freeze pops, jello, etc. You'll feel better because you are having so much fun eating fun food!

Also, I remember the fun, floating feeling I had from the laughing gas. Enjoy that, too!

I guess just use the time to spoil yourself and get some rest. Let others wait on you!

Oh, and my mom made my sis do salt rinses, they're supposed to be good for your mouth. Mix warm water and salt and swish around.

I have to have mine out over the winter break. I'm not looking forward to it at all. :(

I just had mine removed earlier this week and I had the same problem, impacted teeth. Basically, you will go to the hospital, get your IV, and they will wheel you into the operating room. As soon as they started with the gas, I was gone. The surgery lasts about 2 hours. My pain was minimal with the help of a lil Oxycodone....LOL.....

As far as after surgery, I would say to use a lot of ice and stick with the jello, applesauce, and ginger ale.

So, my life now sucks even more. Apparently, my wisdom teeth created some pocket in my gum in one spot where bacteria got in, and it decayed one of my teeth under the gum. Now, 4 days before my extraction surgery, I have to have MORE surgery to reshape the gum there, and then a week after my extraction, I have to get a filling in that spot. PLUS I have jury duty on tuesday. This has not been a happy day at all for nucutiepie.

On a side note I will forever love anyone who is able to cheer me up.

nucutiepie, my experience wasn't so bad. I was in my late twenties and:

The bad part-I had to have them cut out in the hospital because one was so near a facial nerve that the dentist feared that my face would be paralyzed if he accidentally hit it.

The good part-although they had to dig out all 4, I never had any post-op pain. Nada. The painkillers went unused.:D

Ouch! Sorry to hear this. :( Is it one of your wisdom teeth that's decayed, or the molar next to it? (I'm assuming the latter because you say you need a filling and how can you get a filling in a tooth that isn't there any more?)

Sorry about the jury duty too. Just tell them during the screening process that you want to give the guy the chair. Especially if it's just some minor little charge. :p

Yeah, its in the molar next to it, AND, the new surgery will be a THOUSAND dollars - pricey enough for you? Apparently its part of why my wisdom teeth got all infected earlier this summer - eew this is so yucky and I hate talking about it. I was watching my carbs before school but I figure with this second surgery I won't be able to eat anythign for two weeks, so I figure I can eat whatever I feel like for the next week! That's the one bright spot!

Unfortunately my jury duty is in Massachusetts and since we don't have the death penalty, I can't really tell them to give the guy the chair... but my jury duty starts tuesday and I am having surgery on thursday so I can't serve on any long trials!

On a side note, today was really an awful day - I went shoe shopping after leaving the dentist in an attempt to cheer myself up (normally like my favorite activity) and even that didn't help.:(

I was 17 years old when I had another oral surgeon take my wisdom teeth out with my dad watching him, since my dad cannot put anyone to sleep...

There were no roots in my teeth, yet. So they just rolled around while the oral surgeon took them out... He clipped the corner of my mouth a bit while trying to "catch" the darn things...

I woke up with gauze in my mouth.

The I took something kinna close to Demerol. OHHHH, that felt good. Then my mom said I had had enough pain killers and made me take Tylenol with codiene... Go figure...

May sure you don't spit, it could dislodge the clot and cause a dry socket--and if you think impacted wisdom teeth hurt now--get a dry socket...
Do not drink any alcohol.
Careful what you drink through a straw
Replace the gauze on the stitches when you get home
Take your pills immediately--do not wait, pain is too tough
When you get home, put moist heat packs every 10 minutes to keep the swelling down. Then alternate every hour or so with cool packs.
Sleep
Eat a broth like soups--watch the chewing for the first couple of days. Then you can eat more and more as you feel comfortable.

I am correct on this because I was a registered dental assistant for over 10 years when I worked with my dad. But that is another story...

fyi: a week and a half later it still hurts. i promise that it's not like that for everyone though

Seconding AKA_Monet - actually, don't use a straw at all. Sucking on a straw creates negative pressure in your mouth which - well, ouch.

Ahhh, wisdom teeth. I had all 4 of mine surgically removed about a year and a half ago. Actually, the whole getting put to sleep thing was pretty cool. I'd never experienced that before and it was like one second I was looking out the window listening to the Dr. and the next I was out. It was kind of a sureal experience b/c I could still hear certain things the Dr and the nurse were saying, but the time flew by and I couldn't feel a thing. Afterwards, I was a bit of a zombie, but once I left the "recovery" room, I was doing okay. I took a Vicodin the minute I walked in the door at home and went to sleep. The eating squishy foods for a week got old, but I had no problems. No swelling, no bruising, just soreness for a while. And those holes in the back of my mouth were odd....

I just recommend getting a variety of soft foods. The chocolate pudding and oatmeal got old REAL fast. That and ginger ale b/c the antibiotics made my stomach upset and I had no desire to get sick!

Oh, and my pharmacy had no problem filling my Rx's the day before the surgery so I didn't have to wait in the car in pain while my mom took care of that for me.
