All my school is doing is trying to see how that stuff is regulated, etc..

Kappa Delta, Alpha Sigma Tau and Alpha Epsilon Phi, for starters...also a local on my campus called Zeta Beta Chi...

And why are you posting in the Sigma Kappa forum if you don't want to start a Sigma Kappa colony?

I am staring a social women's club in hopes of turning the social women's club into a sorority in the future.

So that would belong in a general forum, not the one for SIGMA KAPPA SORORITY.

Please don't get discouraged. People are only questioning you in hope to understand better. We have serial helpers here on gc. It is what we live for. It is understandable that without a greek life at your school, and MTV's sorority life as an example, you might not understand how greek letter organizations work, especially pertaining to national groups. But you found the best place for information, anywhere! Just keeping reading the threads, it will all come together.

Our group is a women's group. The advisor that I am working with to create this project doesn't know (but I know now) that we are unable to use all SK marks, logos, symbols, etc. because they are registered and trademarked with SK by itself. But, from this e.mail from Pat Mount (she's involved w/ recruitment of SK):

All Sigma Kappa marks, logos, symbols, etc. are registered, trademarked
and/or word marked so you could NOT use the Sigma Kappa part of the name by
itself. Using the four Greek letters (assuming they, in combination, do not
connote an existing member of the National Pan Hellenic or Inter Fraternity
Council) would not be a problem as far as I'm able to determine. But you
would have to be consistent in using all four together.

Does it mean I can use SKEPi together and use marks, logos of SK? I am not using their history since it does not pertain to use since there isn't another SKEPi around.

Cristina, you can use Sigma Kappa Epsilon Pi, but you CANNOT use:

History
Lavendar and Maroon
Snakes
Doves
The Coat of Arms
The Open Motto
The Promise Book
The Heart
etc.etc.

While snakes, doves, hearts and colors cannot be trademarked per se, if you use these in conjunction with the words "Sigma Kappa" in your name--EVEN IF you have "Epsilon Pi" attached to it, be aware that you will raise many eyebrows. You will also probably get lots of Sigma Kappas very irate. Maybe not such a smart thing to do, especially if you are looking to affiliate with an NPC sorority in the future.

Just something to think about.

That means you cannot use anything of Sigma Kappa that is copyrighted - their logos, their name, etc. If your letters are going to be SKEPi, you should use logos that have SKEPi, not just SK. Your history shouldn't be based on another SKEPi, there are many locals that have the same name and they do not have the same history. Once agian, your history should be based on you! Your history should start something like "In 2003, a girl named Cristinasmile wanted to start a women's organization on the Mount Ida College campus." It has nothing to do with Sigma Kappa because you aren't Sigma Kappa!

What she is saying is that no one can keep you from using the letter sigma & kappa. Lots of orgs use these letters. You can not refer to yourselves as sigma kappa. She is probably kinda confused why you are asking. Each letter stands for something meaningful to the group. Only initiated members know what that is. There are lots of group out there with letters similiar to another group. Such as AGD & AZD. But we are completely different. And AGD never had to ask anyones permission to use our letters. The confusion comes into why are you asking Sigma Kappa's permission. Why not ask Sigma Kappa Chi in Santa Barbara? Alpha Sigma Kappa? etc. You get my point? It is not necessary. Just try to be different/unique if you truly want to be a GLO (greek letter organization). And if down the line you decide you would like to become part of a national organization, worry about it down the road. My advice to you is to make yourself as different as you can from all national groups. Also READ! READ! READ! Read through as many threads as possible to get an idea of how glo's relate to one another. wishinhopin and tke209sweetheart have some great threads on starting up.

I told her to come here, because I obviously wasn't getting through to her. Now that I see other people talk to her - I don't see ANYONE getting through. She's a a brick wall. A brick wall from Sigma Kappa Epsilon Pi which is NOT an NPC sorority, mind you. ;)
