OK, am I just hallucinating or did I hear a "country" cover of Elton John's "Tiny Dancer"? I have no idea who it was, but it was ok. Just not the original that I love.

Does anyone know? I admit I know zip about country singers.

Madonna's "American Pie" -- she left out half the verses! That song is a story and if you leave half of it you're completely butchering it.

Counting Crows and Vanessa Carlton's "Big Yellow Taxi" is pretty bad.

When Puff Daddy covered/sampled (? -- I'm not sure which term is more correct in this case) "Every Breath You Take." Creepy!

I'm still bitter/pissed/angered about the cover of "Sweet Child O'Mine" by Sheryl Crow. Dag on it, it's a Guns & Roses song....KEEP IT THAT WAY!!!!! She butchered it!!!!

I don't know about that. The Song was pretty well recieved. If you recall on the Grammys, P. Diddy, Faith Evans, the group 112, A Gospel Choir and Sting put on a Good Show doing that song.

It was somewhat well-received. I remember a lot of people complaining about it when it first came out. I think one of the biggest things that people found wrong with it was that he pretty much corrupted the entire meaning of the song.

I think it became much more accepted after the Grammys where Puff Daddy performed with Sting -- like he was giving it the Sting stamp of approval.

At any rate, I still thought it was pretty bad.

I just heard a punk version of "Boys of Summer". It was um, interesting. Dunno that I like it. I've heard a techno version and that was okay.

The Ataris. How about any one of the songs that Shaggy stole?

Conversely, i like Uncle Kracker's Time after Time cover.

Tim McGraw

Thanks, Hootie, for telling me who covered "Tiny Dancer." I didn't think I dreamed it up. Actually, I thought it was a good cover of a great song.

I hated Puff Daddy's "Every Breath You Take."

I don't know about that one...like Hootie said, you might have to see the video and really look at the lyrics to get why it's such a great song for Johnny Cash to cover. There's a line, "everyone I've loved/leaves in the end," then they show he and his wife. Especially poignant.

Now for a cover that rocks--Frente's take on "Bizarre Love Triangle."

Smashing Pumpkins version is slightly bearable, but I really dislike the Dixie Chicks version. And I like BOTH Smashing Pumpkins AND Dixie Chicks. I just kinda feel like it's one of those songs nobody should mess with.

As a huge Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac fan, both of those covers make me cringe and change the station within the first 3 notes I hear.
Tori Amos, however, covered it beautifully. I was pleasantly surprised.

As I was driving home today, I heard someone doing a cover of "All Cried Out," originally by Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam (yay 80s! lol). I was in so much shock from how horrible it was that I couldn't change the station.

Who was it that covered Carol King's "It's too late"? Was it Sheryl Crow or Amy Grant? I don't believe (if it was Amy) she ever really released it. I just remember VH1 having some "divas" redo some of Carol King's music and I thought BOTH of the ladies did a song.

It might have been Allure that covered it . . . but that was three or four years ago!

(I hate to admit that until you mentioned it, I never knew that it was a cover.)

Tori does a lot of covers, and there are some that she does absolutely beautifully and others that are sort of . . . interesting.

GMUBunny 06-19-2003 01:14 AM

Anything Tori does is interesting... but I love most of it!
