How many "Tri-somethings" are there?
There's Tri Delta and Tri Sigma (NPC)
There's Tri Alpha and Tri Zeta (I think they're locals - I saw their website somewhere).
There's Tri Kappa (I think it's educational or honor or something) and there's Tri Beta (also something along those lines).
Any others?

I recall coming across a Tri-Gamma, probably a local but I think they folded.

I've actually noticed this too . . I think it's mostly because a lot of GLO names stand for something in Greek, and really, can there be that many words that start with Xi or Eta or Upsilon?

I also think that Alpha is used a lot because of its significance of being the first in the alphabet. :)

There are a ton of NPC organizations (over a third of the NPC, I think) that have Alpha as their first letter.

PhiMuJulia 06-13-2003 06:16 PM

PHI mu
alpha PHI
delta PHI epsilon
PHI sigma sigma

PHI kappa sigma
sigma PHI epsilon
pi kappa PHI
PHI beta sigma

Rio_Kohitsuji 06-13-2003 06:17 PM

We have alot of "Alpha's"

Alpha Chi Nu aka. Archon (local fraternity)
Alpha Mu Beta (local sorority)
Alpha Sigma Phi (well duh)
Chi Omega Alpha (local sorority)

When 2 of the local sororities were local we had the Sigma's running rampant. :)

Alpha Sigma Tau
Phi Sigma Sigma
Alpha Sigma Phi

Oh, we have a local using all the letters that you al say aren't used very much :) Lambda Omicron Psi

LeslieAGD 06-13-2003 07:09 PM

Alpha, Sigma, and Delta are the most used letter on my campus.

Regardless of where they are Tri-Kappa may not be the best letters to have...I mean what would the letters look like all together people!

Just out of curiosity, did they think that Tri was a Greek letter? Because that would be hysterical!

At my alma mater, Stony Brook, there are organizations with Alphas, Sigmas, Deltas, Phis, Gammas, a few of the following: Epsilons, Thetas, Taus, Betas, Chis, Psis, Zetas, Rhos, Iotas, Upsilons and only one Omega, Mu and Nu.

Valpo's Greek Letters:

Alpha Delta Pi
Chi Omega
Delta Delta Delta
Gamma Phi Beta
Kappa Delta
Kappa Kappa Gamma
Pi Beta Phi

Theta Chi
Lambda Chi Alpha
Sigma Phi Epsilon
Sigma Chi
Phi Kappa Psi
Phi Delta Theta
Phi Mu Alpha
Phi Sigma Kappa
Sigma Pi
Sigma Tau Gamma

Sigma Alpha Iota
Alpha Phi Omega
Delta Sigma Pi

Okay, so most of our have Phi, Sigma, Alpha, and Delta as the top 3...chapter names cover the lesser known Greek letters (Zeta, Eta, Xi, and Upsilon) and the letters left out of our system are Nu, Omicron, and Rho

At my school we have every letter represented in at least 2 organizations each. But then again, we have 36 fraternities or somethign like that. . .I don't know how many sororities, and this is not even including Honor, Ed, Service, etc.

HotDamnImAPhiMu 06-14-2003 01:30 AM

That's funny -- Mr. HotDamn and I had this conversation a couple weeks ago. Or something like it.

I pointed out that a lot of boy GLOs have "Chi" in them. (Theta Delta Chi, Delta Chi, Theta Chi, Chi Phi, Sigma Chi, etc.)

A lot of girl GLOs have "Sigma" in them. (Tri Sig, Phi Sig, Alpha Sigma Alpha, Sigma Kappa, etc.)

My theory is that maybe the Chi has to do with brotherhood and the Sigmas to do with sisterhood. (Of course this is all moot between me and Mr. HotDamn, since between a Phi Mu and a Kappa Sigma we don't have any relevent letters.)

I also think Phi must be a common letter in the Greek alphabet (like our letter "e") or at least start off a couple common words, the kinds that would be in a GLO's secret motto. Like maybe "trust" or "faithful" or "love".

I've often wondered if letters in two different orgs. might mean the same thing. Especially with very different orgs.... like the kappa in AKL and Kappa Sigma and Kappa Alpha Theta and Kappa Kappa Gamma. I can't imagine they do, but I wonder all the same.

AlphaFrog 06-14-2003 01:34 AM

Well, to an ASA the ASA letters mean 4 things...because everything in ASA comes in fours. So I bet somewhere we share a common word.

Our open meaning is Asprie Seek Attain and the Greek translation which also has the ASA letters...

I noticed that too. And, I have noticed that I have seen like only one organization with Iota or Eta in the names. What about chapter letters? Are Upsilon, Omicron, Iota, Eta, and Psi just as uncommon? At IU, there is an Alpha Omicron chapter, either it is DU or Lambda Chi, but that was the first time I have seen Omicron other than in my organizations name.
Kappa Eta Kappa is a national (professional & coed) electrical engineering fraternity of which my friend Erin is a member.

Don't forget Nu Beta Omicron!

In reading this, I find it interesting!

In looking at a 1964 Edition of LXA Psedagogus, the letter has always stood out to me for some reason! At that time it listed one Lambda for IFC.

As usual, someone would come up with this for a Great Post!

PSU, Ks. Gorillas,

We are some what diverse:

LChi Alpha
S Chi
Pi K Alpha
Sigma T G
Phi Sigma K
S Phi E

Sigma Has it.

SSS
ASA
AGD

Once again Sigma Has It!!

Only Prob. is we need more Greeks on Campi!
:(
