KappaStargirl, do you go by "Carly/Carli"?

I am all about uncommon names, but I usually like ones that can be shortened to something else.

Jemima??? I have to agree with you that it would be a big NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! That poor kid would be called Aunt Jemima her whole life, which would be very unfortunate for her.

Yes, I go by Carlie (mom and dad weren't content to use a conventional spelling of the nickname :) ). Or at home, I'm Carlie-Courtney-Amanda, my sisters...argh, how come THEY got the normal names?

My Favs:

Girl:
Star
Celeste
Rachel
Rebecca
Genesis (I thought the real world girl had a pretty name)

Boy:
Ryan
Alex
Andrew

Side note: I remember going to some website that gave you a list of names and then gave you the potential "funny names" your child could have. There was at least SOMETHING for every name. "Jennifer" had some pretty interesting ones that I have never even heard of.

Someone mentioned that Reagan is the name of the girl in the Excorsist, but it's also the name of one of the evil daughters in King Lear. Cute name, bad connotation.

I think it's important to give your child a name that most people have heard of. It's ok to be different, but there is a line that shouldn't be crossed.

I have a somewhat unusual name, which is cool because it sets me apart, but it's also annoying to have to correct people all of the time. I can't tell you the number of times I've heard, "Oh, it's Donielle, not Danielle? I thought that it was a typo."

My boyfriend is Indian, and I still can't pronounce his name correctly, even after 4 1/2 years. He has vowed that even though he would like his children to have Indian names, he told me that "they have to be ones that white people like you can pronounce." :p

What is wrong with:

Boy:

Thomas or Wyatt?:D

Why have weird names like streeter, or some of the new hippie names that some of the stars are coming up with!

I try to use the KISS Principle!

I totally feel your pain CutiePie, anytime I call a place that asks my name I say it and then immediately start spelling it. Do your kids a favor, go to the store with all the personalized little kids stuff and if the name you want to name your child isn't there, DON'T use that name!!!!!:p

EDITED TO ADD: perhaps I should put my name here......Cheyenne, not exactly the irish last name my grandmother planned on and that's what happens when your mom is so convinced that she is having a boy that she doesn't give a second thought to a GIRLS name!!!

My kids are gonna have odd names. I'm sorry, but they are. Not too odd, and not stupid, but odd. Old. Probably after goddeses or opera/literary characters. I'm also not above defying the "Found it on this here map" rule. My ancestors are from near Dresden, and I've always thought that it would be a beautiful name for a girl.

I'll most likely name one of my daughers Hera, after a good friend of mine. We thought that Hera the person was incorrectly named because Hera the goddess is a vindictive wench, but it turns out that Hera the person's parents, who happen to be Korean immigrants, chose the Korean words "he," meaning sweetness, and "ra," meaning beauty, for their daughter. And Hera the person is indeed sweet and beautiful.

Oh, and the daugher in Lear is named Regan, not Reagan. There is a difference. The former is German and means rain, and the latter is the name of a president.

I see nothing wrong with unusual/unique names for kids, especially since I have gone through life with a very common first name. However, I would have to please ask that you consider how difficult it is to tell if a person is male or female by their name. I spend a good part of my day leaving messages for people and sending letters to them. I find out so often that I have called someone a Mr. or Ms. by mistake, and although they may be used to it I am always extremely embarrassed by the mistake!

My best friend's son is named Greydon, which I absolutely love! My nephew is Wittley, which just seems like a girl's name to me. But what do I as a Jennifer Ann know? :p
