pref question
I have a question....since I've never gone through Rush....can someone explain Pref night to me? If you go through Pref and them write down which is your favorite one, and then they don't pick you...what happens?
Or how does that work? I read in someone's post "and luckily they agreed"....so does that mean that if you pick them, and they don't pick you, that you're out of luck at the end of rush week without a sorority? aahh...the confusion!! I'm sure they'll explain this all to me during rush, but then why would I be in GC if I weren't so curious?? lol Thanks! |

Preference Night is the last round of recruitment. It is a much more serious evening...meant to impress the importance of sisterhood upon you. All the sororities have a ceremony, often with songs, candles, flowers and poems. It is a very moving and inspirational night. This evening is where you decide in what order you would like to rank the sororities that you preffed. You will NEVER forget your preference night! :)
Oh, my goodness, you asked the BIG question about bid-matching. Here it is in a *small* nutshell: The Quota system during recruitment theoretically guarantees every potential new member a bid from a sorority on the PNM's preference card. So, if you do not get your first choice, you should get a bid from your second or third choice. In the case that you don't match with ANY sorority (HIGHLY unlikely), there is still an opportunity for you to get something called a "snap bid." Of course, there are rare exceptions to this...and I *know* that there are a ton of threads on the Rush board that addresses bid-matching and snap bids in much more detail. Just browse around! BTW, I preffed Alpha Gamma Delta and Alpha Phi. Both were beautiful ceremonies, I would have been quite happy with either group. But Alpha Gam was my first choice, and I haven't looked back since! :D |
follw-up question
Thanks greeklawgirl....but now I have another question(s)....
Do sororities 'rank' you, like you rank them? Or do they just decide to either drop you or extend a bid? Can the two sororities that you prefed give you a bid?....If not then how do they decide who is going to give you a bid? Or is it that when they give you a bid, if you have them as your #1 choice, then you've automatically accepted??? (can you tell that I'm thinking this over as I type....?) And then what is this about suicide?? Is that when you only put one sorority on your pref card, and then don't get a bid from them? |
Is it still considered a suicide bid if you are only invited to and attend one pref party and that is the one you bid? Are you still eligible for a snap bid in that instance?
|
I preffed ADPi first and DZ second. I was on DZ's first bid list and ADpi's second so I was crosscut. I was snap bid by AXO and have been soooo happy since. Getting crosscut was painful and I was initially sad, but when AXO called I couldn't wait to be a part of their sisterhood.

I went to Gamma Phi and ZTA. I ended up choosing Zeta.

Its a mutual selection process. The PNM rank in order the chapters from which they'd be willing to accept a bid. Be that 1,2, 3, or more. Usually its the number of preference parties you attended. While you're doing that, the sororities are making up their bid lists. Everyone who was invited to and attended their preference party is supposed to be listed on either their first or second bid list. The first bid list is in alphabetical order and is quota in length. For instance if quota is 20 then each chapter will have 20 names on their first bid list. The remainder of the women to whom the chapter is willing to extend bids are on the second bid list in the order that the chapter wants them (ie ranked). You never lose your place on a bid list. Once you make it onto a chapter's first bid list, you stay there until you get a bid, either from them or some other chapter. So, the bid matching process works like this. The first choices of the PNMs are read and if she is on the first bid list of her first choice its a match. At this point her name is crossed off all other bid lists and if on any first lists is replaced by the first name from the second bid list. If she isn't then her card is set aside and the next one is read. This process is continued always giving the PNMs first choice a chance until she matches (by moving onto the first bid list when someone matches elsewhere) or her first choice reaches quota. At this point her second choice is read and if she is on their first bid list, she gets a bid. If not, the processes continues. You should only be "cross cut" if you are toward the bottom of all bid lists of all your preferences and all take quota before getting to your name. |
At my school, we go back to three parties for preference round. I went to DPhiE, ChiO, and AOPi. I ended up picking AOPi, because the sisters were so sweet, and no one judged you strictly on appearances, they really looked at the whole person!

Thanks AZ- AlphaXi
Thanks for the explanation of ranking.....I have to admit that I had to read it slowly in order for it to register in my head! lol
Anyway...another question....is this ranking thing that you were talking about done in public...with the whole rush group? Or done between sororities? Also...(this may be a related question)....at UF, the schedule says for Sat.Aug.25--9:20pm, Ranking Session. Can someone explain? Last year I remember seeing sorority girls going to my dorm hanging up signs with their letters on the doors of girls who had rushed. What exactly was that? (i'm sorry if it sounds vague) |
