It was just something that I heard, that those two were especially secretive. I don't mean to say that others are more loose with their rituals or anything, but I have heard that they maybe have more elements in their rituals and longer initiation ceremonies and things like that. I know at our school the meanings of several sororities has unfortunatley gotten out, probably from former members who had gone bad or something. I heard from an older sister though that those 2 particular organizations prided themselves on being highly secretive and had more private ceremonies than others.
That was just something I have heard. You know how at different campuses strange stories are always going around. I don't know how much truth to hold to them, but they are just interesting.

I posted the same thing in the Sigma Kappa forum's version of this thread. I think most people who do not have Tri-Sigma at their school do not know the difference, and there are still a lot of people at my school who still shorten it. I didn't know the difference until one of my Tri-Sigma friends told me. After hearing and saying Tri-Sigma for so long it's just like nails on a chalkboard to hear the other version (see, I can't even say it! ;)).

Personally, at my school people call us tri-sig all the the time. Its an abbreviation and it doesn't offend me or my girls at school.

We do take a lot of pride in our ritual and we never speak our ritual meanings outside of our meetings.

Longwood was a teachers' college at the time. The sororities founded at teachers' colleges (ASA, SSS, AST, KD* and ZTA*) weren't NPC (and therefore not bound to the unanimous agreements) for quite a while. So it would have been kind of like (nowadays) being in Sigma Kappa and Sigma Alpha Iota at the same time. I saw an obit from I think Bucknell that said "Susie Centenarian was a member of Phi Mu and Alpha Sigma Alpha." It sounds strange to us, but back then, it was fairly common.

So no, she (if she exists) would not have been automatically expelled.

*ZTA and KD closed their Alpha chapters at Longwood to become part of NPC. They reopened them when Longwood became a 4 year college and eligible for NPC expansion. So they were NPC before the other 3.

The Farmville Four are Kappa Delta, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Zeta Tau Alpha, and Alpha Sigma Alpha. Alpha Sigma Tau was not founded at Longwood.

I believe 33girl was referring to current NPC members who were part of the Association of Education Sororities(AES) or founded at teaching colleges, the majority just happen to be founded at Longwood.

You called it, dude. Hence why I said "founded at teachers' colleges" instead of "founded at Longwood, a teacher's college." I'm quite aware of who the Farmville Four are. :)

I realize it's irrelevant but I and a few of my sisters are in SAI and SK at the same time. What are you comparing it to? I don't think I understand.

She was simply saying that before the Association of Education Sororities groups (SSS, ASA, AST, DSE*, PKS**, QSY*** and PDQ****) joined the NPC (1947-51), being a member of an NPC and an AES sorority at the same time was not uncommon and was similar to being a member of an NPC org and SAI (or another non-NPC sorority) today. That's all.

I know this is a very old thread and such, but I did want to point out a few things...so to "end" the mystery....

All the founders of Sigma were born and raised in VA.

Sigma Kappa did not expand outside of Colby until 1905 and they went to Boston, I believe (A Sigma Kappa can verify this info), they did not expand into the South until 1917 at Randolph Macon (VA).

Sigma's first chapter in NE was Theta Chapter (Hood College), 1905, charter was pulled in 1907. Sigma Kappa has never had a chapter at Hood College.

Also, Violets, Triangles & Pearls were very popular back in the day....

FYI: The Triangle of Sigma Sigma Sigma was published *before* the Triangle of Sigma Kappa, perhaps a few months or a year, I think 1905/1907 respectively.

The things that the founders have in common are great taste in public symbols....:D
