now returning to the candace and jordan show.....

i am honestly so sick of candace. i really don't think she gets what being in a sorority means. And i don't think that's the actives fault. i mean, her whole whiney speech about "this is just so hard...school, pledging, living here, getting to know actives, getting to know pledge sisters, it's all really hard..." well, maybe it wouldn't be easier if you didn't drink quite as much!

part of me feels sorry for jordan, however, her behavior does suck. And honestly, if this were happening in my organization both of them would have been asked to turn in their new member pins.

JUST A RUMOR!!!!!!

i could be totally wrong, but i heard a rumor that "sigma" was being sued by a NPC sorority. Details anyone?

I think that in most organizations, with the crap that Jordan and Candace have been pulling, would have been shown the door. I'm trying to like Jordan, since she's a poli sci major, like myself. But, with all the drinking, they are making all sorority sisters look like a bunch of alcoholics! That's not an image that I want for PNMs to look at.

That is my .02

I haven't heard that rumor but it could possibly be true. Someone on another sorority life thread had mentioned that she thought she saw her letters in the opening credits. since I had to tape the show last night, when I watched it I ran the credits slowly. Sure enough, at the last opening credits the letters for Delta Gamma, Tri-Delts, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and Pi Phi are shown on screen. I would think that the NPCs would be suing since all were so against any member participating in this. From what i understand at UC Davis, the NPC groups were told by their HQ that they shouldn't even have letters on if filming was occuring any where near them.

EagleChick19 07-16-2002 10:49 AM

There would be a great reason to sue MTV/the producers of the show. Because I'm sure that that those organizations didn't give them permission to use their letters in the opening of the show. I would like to see what happens with this!

Associate members of the UC Davis Panhellenic Association but not of the National Panhellenic Conference, since they are considered only a local and not a national sorority. Generally, new fraternities and sororities are accepted in the local Greek council first as associate members and later as full members.

Why would Sigma get sued...wouldn't it be MTV?

Anyway...

I would first of all like to say that I have been a victim to a screen door when I was SOBER so I can totally see how that happened...yes, it was funny but damn that had to hurt :D

Mara got sick at her OWN apartment with her friends outside the sorority. She did not get sick at the BBQ.

I don't really care how Candace and Jordan acted when they went to the bar because a lot of my friends act like that and we know that they are just joking around...and so does everyone else. Plus, didn't it show Candace walking into the bar with her parents? (I know about creative editing, so maybe she went to a different bar afterwards) I think if her parents thought that she was doing something bad they would have said something to her.

The active sisters think that the pledges go out every night and get wasted. Of course MTV only shows us the party side but I say as long as you have your shit together and are getting everything done it is none of their business. My husband and I went to the bar for 84 nights in a row...so does that make me out of control? No, we went there had a drink, chit chatted, and then left. These girls could very well be doing the same thing.

Everyone has to remember that they only show bits and pieces of pledge meetings, house meetings, etc. so we really have no idea what entire meetings are like and what is discussed. You also have to keep in mind the creative editing of MTV. Not all scenes fit together and if you watch closely you will see that very easily.

I think the MTV pledge house is the worst thing that this sorority has ever had. Not only did it divide the sisters from the pledges but it also divided up the pledge class.

I can't believe I'm actually about to defend some aspect of that show ... people might be getting sick of seeing the same few pledges and members over and over again, but that's because those girls who didn't want to participate didn't have to. That means you're not seeing those other girls because they didn't want to be shown on national TV - and you can bet they probably didn't join because of MTV! Be glad MTV is sticking to its promises in this case - you wouldn't want to be one of the girls who said "no" but then found your face all over MTV.

I too think the pledge house is a bad idea. It makes it easy for MTV to film, but it increases the unity of a small portion of the pledge class - at the expense of pledge class unity and chapter unity.

OK, so easy on Jordan's hair. Mine is EXACTLY like that, and we naturally curly haired girls gotta stick together! When Jordan hit the door, I about peed my pants laughing! I've done stupid things when I was drunk, so I guess I could appreciate it. These ladies that are 21 can go out and drink as much as they want. If the actives don't put any rules in place during the pledge program to prohibit that, then why bitch when it happens? You had the option to try and control this! Sorry, but this sorority is and should be the laughing stock of Davis's campus!

I'm glad to see that the sisters finally punished the wilder new members. I disagree with how it was done, though. The sisters should have voiced their concerns in general terms to a full new member meeting, without naming names, and then their standards board (or equivalent) should have had private meetings with each new member in question. Jessica should not have been told "you're not in trouble but all your housemates are."

We know they spoke to Jordan privately earlier on. Did the other new members have any inkling that their behavior was causing concern among the sisters? Or was it just "surprise, we're taking points away from you"?

Jordan did have a point, though, that they were out celebrating Candace's 21st, which is a one-time occurrence - so getting somewhat wild should be acceptable. (Note that I say "somewhat" - they were over the top.)

As far as age goes, I think Dede is the only new member in the house who's underage throughout the show.

I, too, am disappointed (but not surprised) that MTV didn't play up other aspects of sorority life. They had a great opportunity to talk about Mitzvah Day, but all we heard was "she's doing community service, we're un-mitzvah-y, giggle giggle." But talking about community service doesn't bring you ratings... showing the girls getting piss drunk and dancing in bars brings you ratings.

You know what scares me most about this show? The fact that I seem to be addicted...!

these are real people

I know that we have all come to the conclusion that this is no longer about sorority life, but we need to remember that these ladies are real people. Let us try to not riticule them. They have feelings.

I also have a question... do you think that the pledge house came before or with MTV? I have never heard of a sorority having a "pledge" house with a pool and hot tub, at least not here in the East.

I just wish MTV could keep the show real instead of going for the contriverse. As Greeks we already have an image problem, we don't need this also. Think of all the Freshmen women, debating whether to rush this fall and next spring. I think that we need to do some major PR work.

I think that the hot tub with the house that MTV bought and refurnished (with IKEA, no less!!!) Has anyone seen the product placement in there?!? Dear Lord!!!

MTV has a tendency to focus to on the contreversy b/c it keeps up the ratings up and ppl watching!!
