IMO I find it odd that my friends in college went to high schools with no minorities or only a handful. can anyone else relate?
|
Can't relate to that, but.....
I went to HS with probabaly a total of 10 white people in all 4 grades period! It's funny because once I got to college the majority of my closer friends turned out to be white. |
The neighborhood where I grew up was 100% white & mostly Catholic.
Right now, I live in a neighborhood that is partly in the Italian section of Pittsburgh. Not sure about my specific neighborhood (it's only 5 blocks long). My college was pretty diverse for only being 750 people. |
ztamiami, similar story. I went to school with a nice mix of people but he majority was black. Now that I am at school in Massachusetts demographics have flip-floped.

My elementary school and my neighborhood: ALL black
My HS and college: predominately Caucasian My neighborhood: diverse |
where do you live in dc?
|
Grew up ~> majority black (something like 60/40)
College~> black ;) Current location~>white (the city is only like 8% black) |

cool, My aunt lives in germantown. When I graudate I want to move back to the dc metro area, but the housing market is ridiculous. Hopefully in 2 years it will cool down a bit.

First Elementary School: Almost all white
Second Elementary School: Predominately white but more liberal-transferred there because the racism was so bad at the first elementary school. HS: Pretty diverse, more white than any group, pretty intergrated. College:Also pretty diverse, still more white than any other group, but very segregated. I'm probably gonna get flamed for this: When a parent sends their kid to a school that is a different background from their own-they have NO idea what they are getting their children into! |
The neighborhood where I grew up was almost entirely white, but the schools I attended were pretty diverse (the high school's racial percentages were nearly identical to national ones). Now that I'm in college, I'm back in an almost all-white environment (90 percent).

Dionysus, I really agree. I think everyone should have people they can identify with at a young age.

I hated it and as a 4 or 5 year old, I went out to Long Island, where it was predominately white, and the Caucasian children stared at me and I stared at them and I was fascinated, and a bit mad that I didn't have these different people to play with and ask questions of. It was a big reason I chose the HS I did and the college I did in the town that I did! |
I am from a "Army town" and we have almost every race you can think of living there....but all in a Southern background (if that makes sense...I mean it is TN for goodness sakes!)
I'm glad I have always been exposed to other cultures. I think it makes me a lil more open minded and tolerant. |
When I was growing up in Cleveland, The neighborhood I live in was primarely Black and working Class.
Catholic elementary School: Black Catholic High School( First Two Years) : white Public High School( Last two years) : Diverse College: Diverse Current Suburb where I live: very Diverse |
