#3 *IF* those who are involved can find some marketable USEFUL purpose for GX. Something besides what we have already... Educational stuff, conventions... whatever.

#4 if things keep going the way they are currently.

Tom Earp 05-08-2002 04:42 PM

#4. Not to say that I do not want to still get a group of GCers together at different places around GreekDom,to meet and share ideas as we all do in real life with real people!

We all have a common goal, that is to work with our Fellow Greeks for the Betterment!

I for one have a priority of working with My Local Chapter to Build a New House and to work with My International Organization.

But I would still like to Meet some of My Fellow GCers!:D

DeltaBetaBaby 05-08-2002 05:57 PM

Well, I for one never wanted to do anything with GX, so I won't officially vote, but can we still have GC regional conventions? They don't have to be anything formal, I just want to meet some of y'all.

I think my first post on GChi

When the idea first came up, I thought the concept was as such: an informal group of Greeks and non-Greeks, brought together by Greek Chat that crossed the needs of individual organizations and respective umbrella organizations. Kind of like a "big umbrella" organization, if you will. I thought it might provide the opportunity to think of and implement tools, ideas and strategies that would re-establish Greek Life as a positive and beneficial experience on both campuses and within the community, as well as showcasing and encouraging the commonality of the Greek Experience regardless of your NPHC, NPC, NIC, MGLOC, LGLOC, Local, or non-Greek backgrounds. Gamma Chi would also be a good opportunity to meet with your fellow GC folks around the country: for GChatters, I think Greek Chat has become a hobby and lifestyle much like collecting fine wine, crystal or Star Trek memorabilia. There is certainly nothing wrong with that.

Then I didn't pay too much more attention to it.

Then I started to notice membership requirements, public relations, Alpha classes, induction ceremonies...etc. It started to look like folks were spending considerable time and effort in "creating" the trappings of a fledgling, formal organization, rather than turning attention on ways to make ALL Greeks more visible in a positive way via creating a "Gamma Chi All Greek World" Day around the country or a “October is Promote Greek Life month”, for example.

What I "thought" was the concept of Gamma Chi is I believe a noble one: it certainly would provide an opportunity to learn more about each other in this eventual Greek World. However, it certainly looks more and more like Gamma Chi was really about creating yet another formal organization to which to belong. For some reason, that doesn't sit as well with me as my original thoughts about the organization.

So while my opinion may not be worth the keyboard I'm using to type it with, I think that #3 may provide a good opportunity to really think about what type of group would be most beneficial to promote cross-functional relationships between Greek Organizations coupled with the opportunity to highlight the benefits of Greek membership. Maybe that takes a formal membership induction, membership classes and the like...then again, maybe it doesn't.

Best,
Shel

My intention in posting this was twofold.

1. From a purely pragmatic standpoint, I wanted to know if we wanted to go ahead with a new member ceremony. After reading over this thread and the other Gamma Chi related posts, I feel we shouldn't, at least not at this time.

2. I wanted to get a sense from all GreekChatters (not just those of us who have been more active in trying to put Gamma Chi together) about whether we collectively feel Gamma Chi is a good idea, a bad idea, or something we should just all forget about. I still feel the original idea behind Gamma Chi was good, but it has created so much controversy that I believe it should be shelved for a while. Hopefully, at some future date we can resurrect the original ideas without it tearing us apart, but for now, I suggest we just move on with being GreekChat.

ZN TKE- right on

OK- this Gamma Chi stuff is the biggest bunch of hoopla Ive ever seen, you are greeks on a chat board- not a fraternity or whatever the hell "E- chapter is" give me a break.

Im a greek alumni for my chapter at my college, and as far as Im concerned I enjoy the posts I read here but the idea of an organization based on it, with conventions is a joke at best, and an embarrassment at worst.

To sum up my opinions Ill quote Ice- T

"who gives a f*ck?"

PS- ZNTke- you hit it right on the head

Well, you don't have to give a fuck, of course, but someones obviously do (both pro and con), or there wouldn't be such a ruckus going on here!

i think after reading and re-reading things, i am voting #4.

i am on the alpha list, and i was initially interested in serving as a "mentor" . but after spending lots of time today reading over things, i have to agree that i am not sure what the point is....or how its different from greek chat in general. since someone got spanked for leaving a comment - ill stop now :) sorry hehe :p

#4

Someone said:
"just wondering of the people voting for #4 were ever interested in the first place..."

Well, speaking from my own POV, I wasn't ever interested because I could see all this drama coming from a mile away...and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Also, can I remind you all of the countless posts where people have said things along the lines of "I don't love my GLO merely because of the ritual, or the symbols, or the philanthropy, but because of the brotherhood/sisterhood it brings?"

Well, until recently, I personally think GC HAD all that fun, fuzzy, brotherhood/sisterhood stuff. And if attaching all the other features of a GLO to Greekchat jeopardizes that camaraderie, is it really worth it?

Sisterplum 05-08-2002 07:57 PM

I'd say #4 too...I was interested in the beginning...but now I just don't see how it is different from Greek Chat. I have not posted much about the whole GX thing (other than I thought the idea was great at the beginning....you can check the posts, I've read but kept my mouth shut)

I would much rather spend the small amount of money/time I have now on my current sorority and leave GC the way it is, a chat board and nothing more! I am, however, still loving the ideas of regional "conventions"...I would love to meet some of my fellow GC members!:D

KSigkid 05-08-2002 08:11 PM

In my honest opinion, #4 is the best by far.

#4..get rid of the drama!!

KRXAlum 05-08-2002 11:41 PM

DGPhoney...
I can see that you might be concerned that people who never wanted Gamma Chi to happen in the first place are putting #4 to alter the outcome, but after looking through all the posts on this thread, it looks like people who WERE all for this to happen are also saying #4... Myself included.
When I first heard about this idea, I thought it was great, but it seems like too many cooks are messing with the pot and now it has become unorganized and confusing. I think it is because there was no understanding of how to get ideas across in an organized manner. The end result, chaos. It seems more people are frustrated than happy with the situation. And it seems Greek Chat is becoming a more hostile place, and I don't think anyone here wants that.
If people go ahead with Gamma Chi, I wish you ALL the luck. But with the MSN site down and some of the Yahoo! Boards not having postings for days, it seems like people are jumping ship on the idea, which is too bad.
