At my school everyone called the Alpha Chi Omegas, Alpha Chi. I have heard throught these boards that the AXOs are called
A- Chi-O. To me, if I heard it and not seen it that would have been confusing to me, because we have Chi Omega on campus. So it was Chi-O or Alpha Chi as nicknames. Much less confusing!

I swear that I'm not making this up. When I was at Auburn, there was a girl who wanted to be a Chi O and when they cut her in rush, she immediately cut everyone else except Alpha Chi Omega--and pledged them so she could tell people, especially the folks back home, that she was A Chi O and they'd think she was a Chi O.

My mom was an Alpha Chi Omega, and one thing I remember her distinctly telling me. It is always Alpha Chi Omega or Alpha Chi NEVER AXO. I guess that would eliminate confusion between Alpha Chi and XO :D

oxhouse. I don't really have a problem with reffering to the physichal structure in which some members life as "the oxhouse" but not for the actully fraternity. Or I'm in OX and Theta Chi. I think they're cool animals, and good UNoffical mascots, but still.

Some mishaps that I have encountered:

Alpha Phi Omega is called either APO or A - Phi - Q. A -Phi - Q is most common with the HBCU all male chapters. One day I was at a mall, I was wearing my APO jersey and the letters were made from this really cute teddy bear fabric. (Of course, I had the matching shorts!) These two guys approached me telling me that I needed to stop perping because I was not an A - Phi - Q. I said you're right I'm an APO and walked off!

Alpha Omicron Pi - Alphas, Alpha O, Alpha Omega Pi

Pi Kappa Phi is known as either Pi Kapp or Pike. (Some places tease and call them the boy Pi Phis.) Those same nicknames I have heard applied to Pi Kappa Alpha.

Theta Phi Alpha - Theta Phi or Theta

I think the funniest thing happened to a friend of mine. He was wearing an AXO grub shirt with the letters written in Greek. A girl walked up to him and asked what's the "A" for? Apparently, she never knew there was an AXO.

How Rude

aopirose,

That was really rude of those brothers to do that to you! That's certainly not upholding the fraternity principle of FRIENDSHIP... Now the whole APO vs. APQ thing...that's a whole other thread that I can PM you about if you'd like. As your sister in service I feel the need to apologize for that.

I don't think you can screw up Sigma Sigma Sigma, but we do get alot the 3 E's, but that's just silly. And Please....out of respect, please don't ever call us Tri Sig, it's Tri Sigma for short, just Tri Sigma. Thanks!!!

Ok, I went to a school in Kansas and our ASA's did call themselves the Apple's. There were apples on everything! Isn't your mascot the ladybug? But, we did go to a teachers college, so I bet that's where that started. It even sounds weird to me to call them ASA's.

And would a Pike please respond here? Pi Kappa Alpha at every university I have ever been to have been the Pike's. PKA, doesn't make sense to me....but that's the way it is. I don't think I'm wrong...would a Pike speak up here?

Re: How Rude

gamma_girl,

I appreciate your concern but please don't sweat it. It happened about 13 years ago and it was really all but forgotten. At that time, APO hadn't been co-ed that long in the grand scheme of things. I chalked it up as these two not getting the memo!

I met some really nice A - Phi - Qs at national convention years ago. They were stunned that there were female brothers but really nice about everything. They ran around taking pictures of most every female. They didn't think their chapter back home would believe it otherwise!

Sometimes people get AGD and AZD confused if you say them too fast.

The Halloween before last there was a fatal hit-and-run accident involving an Alpha Xi Delta new member. They had a memorial service that weekend and when I got the message on my answering machine, it sounded like they said AGD not AZD. Since my sister/suitemate happened to have been with her and I had not seen her, I thought she was the one in the accident. While I was very sorry for Alpha Xi's loss, I was so relieved it wasn't one of my sisters.

If that's true, then ChiO got that one right.

well i've had some people call my fraternity Z pitchfork or Z candleabra, of course they did know the right name, they did it to mess with my head, it worked :)

Oh...13 Years Ago!

aopirose,

I didn't know it was so long ago. I thought it was recent!! Well you still handled it very nicely.

I am the first person in my famliy to belong to a GLO. When my parents came to visit me after I pledged Pi Phi and I took them over to the house, there was a sign on the door that said "Welcome to Pi Beta Phi" but with the greek letters rather than spelled out. My mom looked really confused and asked me (completely serious) "What is TBO"?

ZTAngel 02-28-2002 04:15 PM

I went to UF to visit a friend of mine and we went to this party. I was talking to a guy and mentioned I was a Zeta. About ten minutes after we had finished talking, this girl comes over to me and says, "You're a Theta?! So am I!" I explained to her that I was a Zeta. I had about 5 girls come up to me during a two minute period saying "Where are you a Theta at? I'm a Theta too." Turns out that the guy thought I had said Theta, not Zeta.

PinkRose1098 02-28-2002 04:52 PM

The thing I hate most is when I see my friends at home and they would see my letters and they would be like, "So your an Alpha Zeta Delta?" What the??????? And one of the guys who said this to me was pledging a fraternity at the time. Not exactly humourous to me.
