I agree with you. I can't even figure out how to cause that kind of damage. It looks like an actual bomb went off. Further, there is no possible way that all this could have been done without noise complaints. Security also routinely goes through hotel floors. Where was the entire hotel staff and the other hotel guests when all this was going down? It seems crazy that this could have occurred. In a 1000 room hotel, a security officer will know if one room is smoking pot (whether they choose to do anything about it is another matter). For this to occur and nothing to intervene at the absolute very start is very odd. Everyone would get kicked out immediately.

The drinking is getting out of hand, but I also have to wonder if some sort of narcotic was consumed.

The story (above) says that some officials in the community where the ski resort that had the most damage is located are asking for criminal prosecution. Others are against that idea including, reportedly, a 19-year-old man who favors having the students "pay financially and maybe get a slap on the wrist." He also, reportedly, indicated that "partying is very important to college life and sometimes 'stuff like this happens,' and the fraternity and sorority members are paying the price of 'overplayed' reporting."

The story contains some descriptions of the cleanup and repair efforts.

These kids need to face the music in a court of law and accept any consequences that may come their way. What they committed were FELONIES, not relatively harmless pranks. Hopefully any form of repaying their debt to society would include therapeutic rehabilitation and long-term education and treatment for alcohol/drug abuse.

Holy cow, that type of destruction in just a weekend, that takes actual effort. This isn't cosmetic stuff. I don't understand how a party could ever get to this point. It's like the destruction from a riot that happened indoors.

I wonder what the consequences would have been if it were D9 members that tore up the place. Interesting.

A CBS affiliate reports that Sigma Alpha Mu has been suspended for four years, and Sigma Delta Tau has been put on disciplinary suspension for two years by the U of Michigan. The suspensions are due to the vandalism at a resort.

How could the damage be judged, "not malicious" ? (from the university report) so the majority get a slap on the wrist? Alcohol education and Community service. That will make a difference.

That was at a different resort -- same weekend but different groups. I don't think any pictures have ever been shown for that incident, but it doesn't sound like it was of the same caliber at all (poor planning/too many people per hotel room/excessive wear and tear vs. tearing down ceilings and destroying furniture). It's appropriate that the two incidents were handled separately and that different punishments were meted out as warranted.

These are punishments by the university. There may be criminal charges made.

The Michigan Daily's site has a story / blog (above) about the estimated cost at Treetops ($400,000 - plus, including such things as attorneys' fees, accounting costs, and on and on, above the cleanup, repair and replacement costs). There seems to be some question about whether Sigma Alpha Mu and Sigma Delta Tau will "accept" the new dollar figure for reimbursement purposes.

In addition the story quotes a condo owner at the other resort, who describes the damage done and asks how it could not be considered malicious.

Sounds pretty malicious to me.

Unless there are surveillance cameras, I think it will be nanny impossible to press criminal charges. Identifying who did the actual damage will be very difficult.
