Re: Wow! Is That A German Fraternity?

Below, I added the coat of arms of my fraternity association that dates back to the mid 19th century when the first two chapters signed the aggreement to form an association: Cartell of Catholic German Fraternities (which would be the approximate equivalent of ypor nationals/internationals. http://www.kdstv-bodensee.de/nr_gfx/cvwapp.jpg |
Psi Upsilon
I just thought of something..
A couple years ago I was in Indy and visited a couple HQ, including Psi Upsilon's. Each of their chapters designs its own crest. They have a big meeting room (mainly for the board of directors) and the crests are hanging all around the room. It's kind of cool. Perhaps a member can shed more light on why, but it's just something that stuck out about their fraternity. |
I had the opportunity to take the full tour of the SAE HQ in Evanston, IL and in their basement, painted on the ceiling, is the crest of every fraternity. I am not sure if they sororities are on there, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Of course the meaning behind the AGD crest and the ZTA crest are only told to initiated members, but I can say that there is a significance as to why she chose what she did. That is really all I can say and I surely doubt that she wrote about why in her book.
An interesting thought if you look at the TKE and AGD crests they are really kind of alike. Sarah |
Emily (and you can call her that, too!....all Alpha Gams are on a first-name basis and we'll extend that to our Panhellenic friends <g>) writes:
"There were a number of laws governing the use of armorial designs by women. These were controlled by the fact as to whether she was maid, wife, or widow, and whether or not she was heiress in her own right. On occasion her husband might include her family shield with his. Ordinarily she displayed her family arms within a diamond or oval called a lozenge and she did not display a crest as she was a noncombatant. "The heraldry of the American college fraternity, however, is not a compilation of family arms. It bears practically no resemblance to the inherited arms of a family but is, rather, comparable to the permanent armorial designs of cities, corporations, or perhaps more particularly to those of old guilds where craftsmanship, skill, and a common vocational interest bound many individuals together even though therer were no ties of blood." (Note how many NPC groups use shields: AXO, AdPi, AGD, APhi, AXiD, DDD. DZ, GPhiB, KAT, KKG, SK, ZTA.....) HTH! |
It seems that several of the Brothers of LXA have tried to put ours on, none of has been succesful! Try lambdachi.org, the International web site! I know that ours is more true to the Heraldry of the days of old than anyother!:)
I wish I had the where with all but if I was 5 years old I could do it!:( |

Here's my fraternities Coat of Arms. I like ours a lot because it's a little different than others. Take it easy all.

To LXA
You're right; I forgot. I think LXA adopted three colors as the result of a successsful merger early in their History. The Lambda Chis I know don't much use the purple. Their signature colors seem to be green & gold.

Here is the lovely Delta Phi Epsilon crest courtesy of U Michigan. http://www.umich.edu/~greeks/images/...logo-large.jpg

Lambda Chi Alpha shield
I went to the LXA website and noted that the image of your shield was in five parts. That may be why you're having difficulties posting. I recommend that people just go to the main site to admire it! It is very pretty (and I don't care if the boys don't like my use of the word "pretty" :P )

Great that is the answer I was looking for.
