Thank you, thank you, thank YOU, MysticCat! I really wondered about the mysterious "pompatus" for many years. I gave up the search about 10 years ago, but should have known Wikipedia would have the answer. I am complete now.

Why did I care about it, though? Can someone search my psyche and tell me why this even mattered to me?
