The Alpha Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha was founded March 1, 1868 at the University of Virginia, and has been going strong ever since.
Someone once told me that we are one of the few NIC groups whose first chapter has never fallen silent or been recolonized. Anyone else got any info on whether this is true? From many of the posts here, it seems that many groups have had their "first" chapter close at one point or another.

Our alpha chapter was founded August 8, 1839. We had a problem a few years ago and the chapter recolonized. Now its going really strong.

We only have one chapter http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif 12 years and still going strong!!!

gamma_girl52 03-05-2001 03:52 PM

Our story is a little interesting...

Because Gamma Sig was founded by representatives from EIGHT different schools, we actually have EIGHT founding chapters.

Many of us view our Zeta Chapter (located at Drexel) to be our founding chapter, since the ladies there put in most of the work founding our sorority. That chapter is still going strong today!!

Our Alpha Chapter (at the University of Houston) isn't active, though.

I may be a Kappa girl but the Theta's Alpha chapter is actually right across the street from me (DePauw University)

LXA Alpha Chapter was first at the University of Boston - it has been closed two or three times since it's founding (the World Wars, and once for operational issues) but is still a viable chapter.

A fun fact about Alpha Gam's Alpha house. It was designed by one of our founders, my personal favorite one to be exact (OohTeeny I told you I was obsessed with Emily Helen Butterfield http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif)!!! I have heard EVERYTHING in it has meaning, right down to the way the halls are layed out! I want to go see it one day!

Our Alpha Chapter is still going strong at Longwood College. They did just have a fire(the college), but all is well, the chapter is fine!

That is a somewhat similar story to the one from my fraternity:
We were founded by two chapters that formed an association ("cartell")and that were located at Breslau, province of Silesia (now Wrocwaw, Poland)(founded in 1853) and Munich (founded in 1852). Both chapters still exist even though, one is relocated to the city of Muenster after WW2. There are two older chapters from 1844 and 1847 that joined in later. Both are still existing at the place of their foundation as well.

Your alpha house sounds fascinating! I've never heard of any other chapter house being designed that way.

Regarding Emily H. Butterfield, I recently bought a book she published in 1931 "College Fraternity Heraldry." (I bought it off eBay--I've always been interested in heraldry.)

After I got the info I needed I gave it to an AGD in Canada. (I knew it would mean a lot to her....she was so excited!) The book is out of print and very rare, but you might be able to find one out somewhere if you're interested.

Wow I would LOVE to see something like that! She was an authority on heraldry and designed our coat of arms and...(a little known fact) also designed TKE's coat of arms. She was also one of the first female architects in Michigan!! I'm really kinda obsessed with her, but she exemplified a modern woman of the time and AGD so well, how could I not love her!?!? What sorority are you in?

The Alpha Chapter of Chi Phi was founded at the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1824.

Unfortunatly, the chapter was forced to go inactive because Princeton banned secret and fraternal organizations.

It has since then been recolonized and still exists today!

Unfortunately this is not true. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif Alpha chapter at Lafayette is not currently active. Its gone inactive a couple of times over the years, our old continually active chapter is Delta at Auburn University. However the administration at Lafayette has been very helpful and understanding about maintaining our history there and if we had students interested in restarting the chapter there, I am sure they would be welcomed back on. There was an effort a little over a year ago to recolonize, but that effort didn't work (one possible reason is the external pressure to get the active for our fraternity's 75th anniversary)

You're half correct, Brother Pirate. The school (Lafayette College) and the building (Brainerd/Hogg Hall) is still in existence. The Alpha Chapter is not active--although they had a petitioning group last year, it somehow disbanded, so Alpha Chapter is "dead".

However, Lafayette still has all the Alpha Phi Omega archives, and some good tidbits too about Alpha Chapter.
